Behind the 'Idol' seat-switching controversy

Was anyone else psyched that the judges played musical chairs on American Idol last night? For those of you who missed it, Paula swapped seats with Randy at mid-episode, after Simon likened her to a ''precocious child.'' I'm not sure if the move was spontaneous or premeditated, but I'm hoping it's permanent. For one thing, having Randy in the middle served as a buffer that allowed Simon to voice his critiques without Abdullian interruption. What's more, with Paula sounding off first, Randy had fewer opportunities for his ''yo, yo, what's up'' intros. Most surprising of all, though, the change of position yielded some of the ''Vibeology'' singer's most salient comments in, well, ever. Paula, was that really you telling the insufferable Brenna Gethers that she'd lost her audition-round magic? Let's have some more of that, yo!

What did you think of last night's judge swap? And do you think it'll happen again on tonight's men's semifinal?

I think that paula is a great judge. I think people need to leave her alone. Its hur life!

Paula needs to stop lusting after every cute guy on Idol. The Corey fiasco was bad enough. She needs to respect herself a little more. She may look good for her age but she is no spring chicken;she should remember that.

Absolutely love the switch-up. Now we don't have to listen to Paula mimic every comment that comes out of Randy's mouth. She finally has to give her OWN opinion. Plus with Paula sitting in first seat she can no longer wail on Simon. I am so sick of seeing her haul off and smack him all the time. If it were the other way around, we'd NEVER hear the end of it from her--or the viewers. Funny how women (certain women) can smack on men all they want, but men are never, EVER to so much as touch a woman.

I wish they would just fire Paula Abdul from the show....it's so unbearable watching her boring and unoriginal comments...she adds nothing to the show....in fact she is bringing down the show....Thank goodness for Simon. Simon Rocks!!!

Apparently it was a one-time thing. Too bad...the show could use a little shaking-up like that.

Paula rules! That is, Paula RULES. She's now annoying as all hell, sure -- but that's why she can never go. She's the foil everyone hate's to love or vice-versa. I wouldn't mind that chick judge from Dancing With The Stars there instead, but still, Paula's got it. She can't judge music worth sheeite, but she's the coolest. American Idol is the number one show all the time for a reason, I suppose. Good for her. lol

I know what you mean but i'm just used to it the other way. In fairness, Simon is the most brutally honest but sometimes he can be downwright cruel. These are kids and someone must interrupt him from time to time to keep him from utterly destroying the confidence of the contestants. On the otherhand, he isn't always right either!

paula is annoying she's got to go

I love the Vibe-Ology video! That is one crazy song.

For the most part, Simon lets the other two give their comments without interruption but Simon can't ever give his opinion without Paula and Randy chiming in? So what if you don't like what he says, let him have his say. Some of us think Simon is usually right on even if we don't like his choice of words. He has never been known to be tactful in 4 seasons so why should he start now. Shut up Paula and Randy and let Simon have his say.

Oh My God! You read my mind!
I thought the seating change made a HUGE difference -- for the better. In my opinion, Paula usually serves as a cushion between the sometimes-harsh critique of Randy, and the often-harsh critique of Simon. Now, instead of making the contestant feel better about Randy's comments, she actually gives an objective opinion without the baggage of the other judges comments.
I also hate how much they interrupt and criticize Simon.
I only hope the seating configuration stays.

This seating arrangement actually made the judging more fair. I am soooo sick of Randy and the Yo, Yo, Yo bit, and the Dawg! Dawg! Look Dawg, Come'on Dawg, bit that he makes me wanna throw up at times, and Paula is not a judge, until yesterday magically. I hope she asks Fox network or American Idol to pay her for judging now and not blowing smoke up all crappy contestants a#$ when she knows she really agrees with Simon, and Randy deep down agrees with Simon too.

Joey Wed, Mar 1, 2006 at 06:23 PM EST

I think Paula's, well, better comments were due to the fact that she was upset at Simon's insult, not that she wasn't sitting next to him. But yeah, I do like the new seating arrangment.

Yo Wed, Mar 1, 2006 at 05:21 PM EST

Yeah it was kind of shocking how much that actually did make a difference. As soon as they switched, Paula instantly became, an actual judge. Randy jumped right into his critique and Simon had a little bit of extra time. It was perfect!

Tommy Marx Wed, Mar 1, 2006 at 05:14 PM EST

I like the new seating arrangement. What would be even nicer is if Paula and Randy wouldn't keep interrupting Simon every chance they get. They keep saying Simon's cruel, but they're incredibly rude and disagree with Simon before he's even voiced his opinion.

jcoop Wed, Mar 1, 2006 at 04:41 PM EST

agreed! love the switch. paula was less annoying...i think she's always aware of simon beside her and tries too hard to impress him.

Laura Wed, Mar 1, 2006 at 04:37 PM EST

I totally agree with you Slezak, the chair swapping was brilliant. Somehow, magically, Paula and Randy actually gave more honest, constructive criticism - as opposed to B.S. fillers they usually say, like "yo, yo, yo, what's up?" and "you know, we love you, you're a star, America loves you..."

American Idol, PLEASE keep this new seating arrangement!! Please?

zac Wed, Mar 1, 2006 at 04:29 PM EST

I totally agree. It was nice having Paula go first because she was unable to do her "I agree" or "disagree" bit she always does. She actually to form her own opinion first and she sounded kind of sane giving it. I liked it.
