Alyson Hannigan's favorite 'Buffy' episodes

Oct 19, 2005, 06:14 PM | by Gary Susman

Categories: Television

171035__ahannigan_lYes, yes, we know Alyson Hannigan has a prominent role on a hit sitcom (she's Lily, the lusty kindergarten teacher on CBS' How I Met Your Mother), and it's been a long time since she pulled up stakes on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Still, if you were going to interview the erstwhile Willow, as Whitney Pastorek did for next week's Entertainment Weekly, you too would be unable to restrain yourself from asking Hannigan what her favorite Buffy episodes were.

Fortunately, the actress was a good sport and offered her four faves. Not surprisingly, one of them featured Alexis Denisof, who later became Mr. Hannigan. Here are the actress' picks, along with her comments:

1. ''Hush'' (Season 4; creepy floating demons the Gentlemen rob everyone of the power of speech.) ''It was a whole new way of figuring out how to act, the not-talking thing.''

2. ''The Body'' (Season 5; Buffy's mom dies from an aneurysm; the episode had no background score.) ''I just remember the no sound, no music -- it was so disconcerting.''

3. ''Ted'' (Season 2; John Ritter guests as Buffy's mom’s evil robot suitor.) ''John Ritter was the best. We would all just hang out in his trailer and be like, 'Hi, John Ritter!!' and he didn’t care. And, we got to shoot at a mini-golf place.''

4. ''Dopplegangland'' (Season 3; a spell gone awry spawns Willow's nefarious twin.) ''I was in the vampire Willow outfit, and Alexis had some holy water, and he made this noise, like FFFFT!! And it just cracked me up. I had such a crush on him.''

These may have been Hannigan's favorite episodes to shoot, but were they your favorites to watch? What's on your best-of-Buffy list?

Jess Mon, Jun 15, 2009 at 10:05 AM EST

Everybody seems to like episodes from the 7th and 6th seasons, but I completely disagree. Although I enjoyed Spike (and Andrew) the order of my favourites (seasons) is this:
2,3,1,7,6,5,4. I hated 5 and 4 because of Riley. He is evil -_-. He was nothing compared to Angel, the only thing he got right was knowing that Buffy didn't love him.
My favourite episode of all time is the 2nd season episode 'I only have eyes for you', the following that is 'Reptile Boy', 'Lovers Walk, 'The Wish', 'Becoming Part 2' and then Graduation Part 2 and 'Angel. I do like others in the 7th and 6th, but I prefer the high school setting in the second and third season.

Nina Mon, May 18, 2009 at 09:04 PM EST

In chronological order:
1. Welcome to the Hellmouth (set the scene for a great run)
2. Anne ("Wanna see my impression of Gandhi?")
3. Hush
4. Restless
5. The Body (makes me cry just to think about it)
6. Once More, With Feeling
7. Smashed (one of the hottest scenes ever)
8. Selfless (the Swedish is hysterical)
9. Conversations with Dead People (scary as hell)
10. Chosen (going out with hope, just like it came in)

Once More, With Feeling - What can you say? Dancing, singing and general hilarity.
Villains, Two To Go and Grave - Evil Willow is just about the sexiest thing EVER.
Life Serial - The speeding up of time and the time loop were awesome. Not to mention Buffy drunk.
Gone - I laughed my ass off during the parts with the social worker.
Ted - The part where she says "I was so hoping you would do that" makes me happy inside.
The Puppet Show - So many amusing moments, most of them involving Giles. And the closing scene was priceless.
Anne - I loved watching Buffy reunite with her Slayer side. And the part where she the nurse goes "What are you doing??" and she responds "Breaking into your office and going through your personal files."
Killed By Death - I'm a sucker for hospital settings.
Wrecked - Willow on the ceiling tripping on the magics with Black Cat Bone playing.
Chosen - Perfect ending to a perfect series.
Normal Again - Awesome mind trick for the characters & viewers!

Alyson managed to stick with her acting career for a decade before hitting it big, a credit to her talent and perseverance.

I'm a really big fan of the whole Oz and Willow couple era. One of my favorite episodes is Phases, because it's like the spotlight is on Oz and Willow and I really like that line Willow says " You're nice, you're funny, and you don't smoke. Okay, werewolf, but that's not all the time, I mean three days out of the month, I'm not that much fun to be around either." I also like the episode Fear, Itself when everyone's worst fears come to life.

Kate Wed, Oct 10, 2007 at 02:53 AM EST

Just dug the ol' DVD's out again to watch buffy through again, still big fan even now in 2007. Best episodes, well they still even now keep shifting, but now looking back over more time it is:

1. Passion
2. DopplegangLand
3. Graduation Day pt2
4. Seeing Red, Smashed etc, those last ones of season 6.
5. Hush

But so many amazing episodes, I can honestly say that about 90%+ episodes were amazing. One of the great alltime series' is Buffy...

Eddybob Wed, May 30, 2007 at 02:44 AM EST

My Favorite Buffy's (at least the one's I can think of right this minute) are:

1. Once More With Feeling.
2. Buffy vs. Dracula.
3. Dopplegangland.
4. The Wish.
5. Band Candy.
6. (forget the name)The one when Buffy turns into a Vampire.
7. And any episode that Willow's eyes turn black.

My favorite episode is one I cant remember the name of, but it is after cordi and xander break up and she wish Buffy never came to Sunnydale, and in the end Buffy dies.... it was so sad, but I loved it anyways.

stef Sat, Apr 1, 2006 at 08:56 PM EST

I'm a HUGE buffy fan...and my top Buffy eps are as follows

Welcome to the Hellmouth -1st episode of the series it had to be on the list
Angel - you finally found out about buffy's 'mystery guy' & their saga began
Prophecy Girl - it was the 1st demonstration of buffy's true devotion to her calling
Surprise/Innocence -the feeling you get have watching the eps is heartbreaking
Passion- buffy understands that angel is no longer the man she loved; his narration is brilliant
Becoming Parts 1&2-the flashback/narration gives background to why part 2 is so heartbreaking...who didn't cry at the end of that episode
Lovers Walk - the irony behind the fact that Spike is the only one that realizes that Buffy and Angel are meant to be together no matter what
Enemies- the Scoobies realization that Faith is bad & that Angel can do more than brood
The Prom -B/A breakup but he shows up in the knick of time for one last dance
Graduation Parts 1&2-Angel drinking Buffy & blowing up Sunnydale High both speak volumes
Hush-errilly amazing!
The Gift- Buffy made the ultimate sacrifice and outdid herself in the saving the world category
End of Days/Chosen -only an unconventional slayer like Buffy could have thought to have bestowed her power upon others...and referred to herself as 'cookie dough' all in the span of an hour

those are my picks take 'em or leave 'em

Everybody named most of my favorite episodes, but I have to include Lie to Me, because I can relate to how a lie can be comforting sometimes or can hurt like hell.

Renato Belindro Sun, Oct 30, 2005 at 10:54 AM EST

Buffy is the bestest show ever. I don't miss one only episode. Sarah Michelle Gellar is just awesome. Here goes the list of my favourite episodes:

Some Assembly Required ( first episode I've ever seen )
Reptile Boy ( pretty cool )
Halloween ( great story )
What's My Line ( both episodes )
Surprise ( hot, hot, hot )
Bewitched, Bothered And Bewildered ( great story; hillarious )
Becoming ( both episodes )
Homecoming ( Buffy x Cordy? Cool )
Amends ( sweet )
Gingerbread ( spooky )
Doppelgangland ( evil, skanky and kinda gay )
Earshot ( cool )
Graduation Day Part 2 ( lots of suspense )

I Can't wait to see the episodes "Hush", "The Body", "Once More With Feeling" and "Chosen". I also would love to see every episode of the first season, especially "Out Of Mind, Out Of Sight".

BTVS Mon, Oct 24, 2005 at 02:58 AM EST

There are way 2 many eps that qualify as best ones.Keeping that in mind I'll keep this list down to 10.

(In no particular order because "Buffy" was such keeper!)

1.The Gift - This episode had Glory,a great storyline and a GREAT score! (Season 5)

2.Band Candy - Watching Buffy's mom,Giles and the principal act so much out of character was hilarious. (Season 3)

3.Ted - What can I say? This was one of the first Buffy eps outside of the great but highly underapreciated season 6 that I saw.Something that the Ritter family can truly be proud of because the episode pure John Ritter tour de force.(Season 2)

4.The Bad Willow Suite (Seeing Red,Two To Go,Villans,etc...)
The only "person" that could kick Buffy's ass was a out of control Willow.Already a recovering "magic junkie" ,her partner died and Willow went totally off the deep end.She took all the "magic" she could from various sources and not Buffy (and she DID try),nor Giles could control her.It took of all things,Xander's words. (Season 6)

5.Him - This ep was straight up funny. One of Dawn's male classmates get his way with the ladies through a magic jacket.Buffy,Dawn,Anya and Willow all fall prey to his jacket. The extreme lengths that the four women are willing to through is hilarious. (Season 7)

6.Intervention - While Buffy's gone on a spiritual retreat of some sort, the lovesick Spike gets a pre Bad Willow Warren to build him a robot in Buffy's image. The robot (a/k/a "Buffybot"} is identical to Buffy except for one thing:she is insane crazy for Spike.... (Season 5)

7.Bad Eggs - Buffy's got to save her mom and all her friends including Giles from an alien that came to Sunnyvale in the form of eggs passed out in school for a class assignment. (Season 2)

8.Graduation Day (Parts 1 & 2) - Buffy and her friends were set to graduate from high school but the town's mayor kinda screwed things up.He literally turned into a big snake and got the school blown to bits.He treated Faith, now a baddie, like a daughter. She held the only piece of his heart that existed. (Season 3)

9.Once More With Feeling - I've seen other tv shows try this because OMWF worked so well and you what? It's still the king. No,most of them better stick to acting, but that's part of this episode's charm. From the show's producer singing about a parking ticket to Tara singing her heart out,to SMG telling her friends in song that they pulled her from heaven when they resurrected her.One of the show's writer's singing about mustard and Dawn's duet with the Devil.Yet another great episode from season 6. (Season 6)

10.Dopplegangland - Nice Willow versus parallel universe Willow.Except for the fact that look exactly alike, the Willows are the exact opposite in every way. (Season 3)

louie Sun, Oct 23, 2005 at 05:19 AM EST

HUSH
COVERSTAIONS WITH DEAD PEOPLE
HELP
TABULA RASA
EARSHOT
CHOSEN

Shelley Sun, Oct 23, 2005 at 12:10 AM EST

I have favorite episodes and favorite moments in different episodes. Favorite moments include:
When She Was Bad - Cibo Matto, Buffy being really cool, what more can I say?
Bad Eggs - ONLY the Buffy/Angel scenes because they take my breath away!
Dead Things (season 6) - Buffy walking to Spike's crypt and he feels her coming with Bush's music - breathtaking moment. Notice Buffy with gloves and hat while Spike has an open shirt and bare hands - brilliant!
Touched, End of Days, Chosen - Buffy and Spike's beautiful interactions, while small, are so well done.

Favorite Episodes:
Angel - On-screen chemistry and the best kiss I've ever seen
Surprise
Dopplegangland
Lover's Walk - Especially the chemistry of Angel, Buffy and Spike fighting other vamps!
Something Blue - "look at that pouty lip, I'm gonna get it!" Spike says before kissing Buffy - hilarious
Fool For Love
Crush
The Body
Forever
The Gift
Life Serial - "and the only one I can stand to be around is a neutered vampire who cheats at kitten poker" - great line
Once More, With Feeling
Tabula Rasa
Dead Things
Older and Far Away
Him - So, so very funny, espcially Spike tackling Buffy outside wood's window so she doesn't blow him up!
Conversations With Dead People
Storyteller - "smells kinda sweaty" Andrew's is so great
Touched
End of Days
Chosen

Ok, I am new to the Buffy world as I was too busy having my kids during Buffy's original run, but it is so brilliantly written, it's inspiring.

Brian Fri, Oct 21, 2005 at 10:24 PM EST

2. The Body
3. The Prom
4. Lie to Me
5. The Gift

TV Addict Fri, Oct 21, 2005 at 12:17 AM EST

I've read every single user comments here and I've watched every episode at least twice, once when it originally aired and once on DVD.

I'm surprised how many people put "Amends" on their list or at the top of their list. I guess I have to break out the DVD watch it again and give it another chance.

Todd Sass Thu, Oct 20, 2005 at 11:18 PM EST

I could go on forever naming episodes, so I'll just go with 11.

1.Becoming Part 2-Decisions....your boyfriend or saving the world?
2.Passions-Angelus..what more do I have to say?
3.Lover's Walk-Spike's only appearance in Season 3, but he made it count.
4.Amends-Our first "1st" sighting, plus Angel dealing with his past sins.
5.The Prom-Even I teared up a bit
6.Pangs-Spike sitting tied to a chair with arrows sticking out of him...Hilarous
7.Hush-duh...
8.Fool for Love-Joss and his great back stories...we see the softer side of Spike.
9.The Body-Gut wrenching..
10.Normal Again-What a head trip...Buffy imagining she is the Slayer and in a mental ward...
11.Storyteller-Andrew..documentary filmmaker

Charlotte Thu, Oct 20, 2005 at 03:10 PM EST

Each and every one was exceptional, and I'm gald to see so much appreciation for the much-maligned and misunderstood season 6, which was all about diversion. Still, if I have to choose one, the episode I adore seeing over and over again is Amends. The deus ex machina has never been done so well.

John Thu, Oct 20, 2005 at 02:48 PM EST

I loved almost every episode of Buffy with the possible exception of Teacher's Pet, I Robot...You Jane and Beer Bad (worst Buffy ep ever):

My 4 faves are:

4. Becoming (2) (and The Gift tied)
3. Once More, With Feeling (so catchy)
2. The Body (I cried)
1. Hush (best ep ever of every tv show not just Buffy)

Pamela Thu, Oct 20, 2005 at 02:33 PM EST

Hiya, Im Pamela, seem to be the only deaf girl in here who's the biggest fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, I also the biggest fan of Angel the Series.

My favourite episodes in Buffy are, In order

Angel - Buffy discover Angel's secret and how come he didn't bite Buffy?
The Puppet Show - Unusual episode, and Sid was hilarious!
Prophecy Girl - Buffy died and defended The Master and love Buffy's quote 'I may be dead, but I'm still pretty, which is more than what I can say about you' Brilliant!
Halloween - People turn into their customs, Spike was hilarious!
What's My Line? both part - Love Angel/Buffy episodes, I just love their relationship and their development.
Surprise - Cried for the first time in Buffy episode cuz of Buffy's dream that Angel was staked.
Innocence - OMG, sooo sad! Angel lost his soul and transform into Angelus
Passion - Another sad episode when Jenny was killed by Angelus
I Only Have Eyes For You - only episode when we see Buffy and Angelus together, but I know it's the spirit tho.
Becoming part 2 - MY ALL THE TIME FAVOURITE EPISODE, bawled my eyes like a baby!!! :'(
Anne - Love it when sending Angel to Hell haunts Buffy
Faith, Hope & Trick - Buffy keep having flashback of her killing Angel and admit to Giles and Willow about what happened and...Angel back!
Beauty & The Beast - Angel back!!!!!!!!!!!!
Band Candy - Hilarious!!!! I LMAO at it!
Revelation - Everybody discover about Angel
The Wish - how the world happen without Buffy, it's sooo cool, and first time we see Buffy don't love Angel
Amends - Love it, just love it.
Enemies - WOW! Brilliant acting! I fell for it! lol
Earshot - hilarious, Buffy hearing everybody's thoughts and Xander's thoughts are soooo funny!
The Prom - Angel break up with Buffy but spend the prom with Buffy
Graduation Day part 2 - Brilliant, Sunnydale High School is burned, brilliant, just absolutely brilliant
Hush - I can actually lipread what Buffy and Willow said without subtitle because they are not using their voices.
Something Blue - sooooo funny!
The Body - sooo sad about Joyce's death
Spiral - The Scoobies running away from Glory
The Gift - Buffy died
Tabula Rasa - Sooo funny when the vamps wanna Spike, so 'Randy' thought they meant the stakes!!!
Seeing Red - just great, love it.
Two To Go - Giles return!
Grave - Xander is hero of this episode
Selfless - Buffy talk about her killing Angel in Becoming part 2 'I loved him more than anything I will ever love in this life, and I put a sword in his heart because I had to'
Chosen - Brilliant finale, should be more episodes after that though. :(

Favourite Angel episodes

City Of Angel - Great inroduction
I Will Always Remember You - sooo sad!!! Buffy and Angel finally spend 24 hours together as real couple, nothing is immortal but change 24 hours back cuz Buffy will died if Angel is human, so Buffy won't ever know that she actually spend a whole day with Angel.
Hero - Doyle's death :(

that's all i remember, I got to watch Angel more! I just start lol

Sorry for a long comments :D

Kimmie G Thu, Oct 20, 2005 at 01:16 PM EST

I, too, miss Buffy more than words can say. Seriously, there's not a single, cool thing on TV that compares right now. My Tuesday nights are sadly lacking.
As for favorites, I'll say that the the Buffy/Angel eps are among the majority, including "Angel," when B. discovers his vampire-ness; "The Prom;" that one, "Amends," that was mentioned earlier; and the season 2 finale. Oh yeah, and the one where Angel returns from hell towards the beginning of season 3. Also, the one where Buffy turns 18.
As for funny, I think "Tabula Rasa" is among the best; as is "Band Candy," with Giles and Joyce.
And when I come across any Buffy repeats, I can't help but stop, watch until the end, curl into the fetal position, and sob into a pillow.

Janie Clayton Thu, Oct 20, 2005 at 12:58 PM EST

I loved "Life Serial", I don't think I've seen it anywhere else. The scene where Buffy had to satisfy the customer and it was impossible was genius. Not to mention the kitten poker scene. I also liked "Older and Faraway" and "Normal Again". Their resolutions were creative and didn't seem like cop-outs (Halfrek getting stuck in the house too and having to lift the curse and Mrs. Summers encouraging Buffy to leave her and save her friends). All in all I liked season 6 the best even though it seems to be the least popular one besides Once more with feeling.

Rachel Thu, Oct 20, 2005 at 12:48 PM EST

Everyone has picked some great eps that I too could watch again and again. I am glad that Aly chose Doppelgangland - it's definitely up there on my list.

One episode that I adore that has not yet been named is I Only Have Eyes for You. It's got Angelus, an unusually vulnerable Giles, wheelchair Spike, plus some great Buffy/Angel(us)scenes. And who can resist Christopher Gorham!

Tony N. Thu, Oct 20, 2005 at 11:10 AM EST

You guys have named some of my all time favorite episodes. Here are some of my other favorites that I don't think anyone has mentioned. The list isn't in any order except for seasons.

Prophecy Girl - Season 1 finale, the first time Buffy died. The first really great Buffy episode.
Lie to Me - Season 2, where an old friend betrays Buffy. First episode to indicate how dark season 2 would be.
Innoncence - Season 3, some of the most heart breaking scenes in the series in this episode.
This Year's Girl and Who Are You - Season 4, Faith returns and I loved how Sarah played Faith and Elizu played Buffy.
Restless - Season 4 finale. Loved the look of the episode and it also gave important clues for the rest of the series.
Selfless - Season 7, great episode giving Anya's background.
Storyteller - Season 7, great episode with Andrew recording the goings on at Buffy's.

I'll stop before I do every episode.

Bethany Thu, Oct 20, 2005 at 10:56 AM EST

Ok...wow I miss Buffy! It's even tough for me to catch reruns. First my favorite seasons: 6, 2 and 5 tie, 3 and 1 tie, 4.

Favorite episodes (I could never pick just 4)
Fool for love--Seeing spike minus baudy accent is hilarious
Something Blue
Becoming Part II--who said something about tissues earlier?
Amends--who knew the evil First would reappear?
The Prom
The Replacement
Crush
The Gift--The Ultimate 100th episode

Of course The Body, Hush, and OMWF are the premiere Buffy episodes.

I love most everything in Season 6 including Tabula Rasa, Smashed, Gone, Two to Go and Grave (Ultimate Season finale).

Carly Thu, Oct 20, 2005 at 10:50 AM EST

I'm down with Becoming 1 & 2, Surprise/Innocence, etc. But I've always loved Bad Girls for the initial stake (no pun intended) driven between Faith and Buffy. Brilliance.

AM Thu, Oct 20, 2005 at 10:44 AM EST

Tabula Rasa is great! Spike thinking his name is Randy Giles and that Giles is his dad! So very funny. And of course Once More With Feeling, which is actually being performed by a theater group in San Francisco this weekend. I'm going, should be interesting.

Elena Thu, Oct 20, 2005 at 10:25 AM EST

Thanks for fantastic Aly photo!

I think Aly's best episode is Doppelgangland. My personal faves are
Intervention
OMWF
FFL
The Gift
Chosen
TabRasa
S\I
Becoming 2
Hush
Dead Things
Never Leave Me

And, Joey - EW did a BtVS episode guide in Oct., 1,1999 issue

Kyle Thu, Oct 20, 2005 at 10:22 AM EST

The high school stuff is pretty excellent (Season Three is probably my favorite big arc overall), but for some reason most of my favorite individual eps come from the UPN years. I love "Tabula Rasa" from season 6 (everybody loses their memory, which leads directly to Tara leaving Willow) and "Conversations with Dead People" from season 7 (the stuff between Dawn and Joyce is phenomenal and creepy). I also am in love with "Two To Go" from the end of season 6 because it has the single greatest reveal/entrance in the history of television.

Willow: Nobody can stop me!

(Gets blased by a fireball)

Giles (appearing in doorway): I'd like to test that theory.

I get goosebumps just typing it.

Melissa Thu, Oct 20, 2005 at 10:03 AM EST

My all-time favorite ep is Amends. "It's the demon in me that needs killing.. it's the man." I love the Buffy-Angel angst.. and of course it's the first time we see the bringers - Joss rewards us for paying attention in the early years. My short list:

1. Amends
2. Becoming Parts 1 & 2
3. Surprise/Innocence
4. When She Was Bad
5. Anne ("want to see my impression of Ghandi? You know.. If he was really pissed off.")
6. The Body - I agree that this is one of the best hours of TV, ever. The lack of a soundtrack was heartbreaking, and everything about it was just about perfection. However -I can't bear to watch it over and over, like I do with my favorites from the high school years... it's just too hard.
7. Basically, the second half of season three, starting with Enemies (Angel and Buffy trick Faith into thinking Angel has lost his soul), all the way through Graduation Day part 2. Every week was amazing.

"OMWF" and "Hush" will please most people; even non-Buffy viewers, the writing and storytelling are impeccable. "Bad Girls" from season 3 is my favorite of them all cause that's when Faith starts showing her true colors. "Normal Again" was an incredible episode with a very disturbing ending and "the Body" is simply SMG acting at her best.

The Body and Hush are amazing.

The first showed that you can talk about death in a teen show without being cliche, and also be very honest.
I think that not only Joss peaked with this episode (together with Hush), but all the cast members.
Sarah Michelle Geller deserved an Emmy for her performance here.
It's the most depth episode of them all.

The second is so cool! It's so cool to watch it and see how much it is inspired by old silent horror movies. It's a genius episode. Once again, it's where the show got this peak.

Another episode I love is the one where Buffy loses her powers. I don't remeber the name, but I think it was in the third season. It was great, but no one ever remebers it.

And of course, Anne, which is the best season premiere of all.

PS: Fear, Itself was the most entertaining of them all.

My favorite episodes of Buffy are:

Earshot
Hush
Dopplegangland
Consequences

In that order

Stef Thu, Oct 20, 2005 at 08:56 AM EST

Restless is definitely my favorite.

That is such a pretty picture of Alyson!

maria Thu, Oct 20, 2005 at 08:41 AM EST

I loved Graduation. It know it's not the best episode compared to Hush and OMWF, but i really liked it.

sarah Thu, Oct 20, 2005 at 08:31 AM EST

wow. how do i pick just a few eps of the best show ever...? Becoming PT 2, The Body, Hush, Passion...all classics for sure but i also loved anything with Dru, Faith or Glory...best girl villains ever! I was a huge Buffy/Angel fan and loved anything when they were together (even when he was evil)...talk about star-crossed. And Spike.....I really miss this show but watching the dvds is just as fun.

Mozz Thu, Oct 20, 2005 at 08:25 AM EST

The Body was the best written episode in the series.
Hush was the scariest.
The most fun was Once More with Feeling.
Episode I most indentified with - The Zeppo.
Best episode - "every single one of them. This is definetely one of the best tv serieses ever."

Eric Thu, Oct 20, 2005 at 08:16 AM EST

My favorites like everyone else include Hush and Once More With Feeling. But I also really enjoy any episode with evil Angel. He was such a better character when he was bad. It was quite wierd actually, I never liked Angel in the show. In fact I downright hated him. But I LOVED Angelus. He was awesome. My other 2 favorite episodes were "Ted", (so glad Alyson Hannigan agrees with me on that one!) and my ALL TIME FAVE, THE ONE THAT REALLY REALLY REALLY GOT ME HOOKED: The Zeppo. Best Episode Ever. It was hilarious.

mike Thu, Oct 20, 2005 at 08:13 AM EST

Hush, the Body, The first four season finales, were all great. But, I have to include the episode early in season one, when five students including Xander were possessed by Hyenas and ate the principle. At that moment, I knew this show was special.

GT Thu, Oct 20, 2005 at 07:36 AM EST

Totally agree with anyone who said passion was the best ever. I mean how often is voice over done well on TV. Not only was it done well it was extremly creepy.

Johnny Thu, Oct 20, 2005 at 03:49 AM EST

Id have to go for Hush, Restless, Family, The Body, Tough Love, OMWF & Tabual Rasa. Im still watching Buffy on DVD, it's still as engrossing as ever! :)

Ian Thu, Oct 20, 2005 at 03:35 AM EST

Hush and Once More, With Feeling tie for me - but I can see why Ms. Hannigan wouldn't include OMWF in her list. "I think this line's mostly filler".

For her work, Seeing Red (and the rest of Season Six from that point forward), Full Moon Rising and Dopplegangland do stand out the most.

If I stand back from my own prejudices (Musicals and Horror), "The Body" is perhaps the best episode of TV done in the past decade. Take some time and netflix the disc if you don't own it - don't let commercials get in your way. That is 42 minutes of... well, entertainment isn't the best word. Neither is education, and edutainment is just wrong.

It's 42 minutes of distilled reality.

My mom passed away about 3 years ago, at least as suddenly as Joyce did (we didn't even have the brain-cancer prelogue). When someone goes when it's unexpected, somone that important to you - things go haywire.

This episode always brings that back to me. the chaos, the "I shouldn't be feeling this" feelings...

Joss peaked with The Body.

Lillian Thu, Oct 20, 2005 at 02:05 AM EST

I have favorites from each season...

Season 1: "The Pack"
Season 2: "Lie to Me"
Season 3: "Amends"
Season 4: "Hush"
Season 5: "The Body"
Season 6: "Once More, With Feeling"
Season 7: "Chosen"

steph Thu, Oct 20, 2005 at 01:46 AM EST

i loved hush, seeing red, once more with feeling and the rest of the series it just brill and well written. the acting was out of this world and it just blows your mind. i hope they bring it back and do a couple more seasons with the same actors.

1. Becoming Part 2. The best payoff/season finale ever.
2. Hush.
3. Once More with Feeling. I've listened to the soundtrack a thousand times. Joss is a god.
4. Dopplegangland. Because I'm the biggest Aly fan.
5. The Body. This episode felt so real.
6. The Wish. Love the slo mo death at the end.
7. Passion. Aly's crying makes me cry.
8. Fool for Love. Spike!
9. Innocence.
10. Earshot.

I also liked Adam's death in Primeval, Lover's Walk, Buffy getting her umbrella, The Freshman and Living Conditions, Sexy Willow in Halloween, and Anya in the bunny suit Fear, Itself, Conversations with Dead People... and I totally loved evil Willow.

miki Wed, Oct 19, 2005 at 10:14 PM EST

man! just when I thought Im finally over missing Buffy... here you go again and remind me of those oh so wonderful episodes! Damn I loved so many but to list a few, I loved passion, the prom, the wish, the body, and tabula rosa

Libby Watts Wed, Oct 19, 2005 at 10:07 PM EST

Buffy! Hazah! There are just so many fabulous episodes, and like everyone else, where to begin. Each one that everyone else has put down is awsome, here are some more I love:

1)Chosen - Buffy rallying the troups once last time, and when the core 4 join together at the end talking about about what they'll be doing the next time and Giles says "the world is definetly doomed"....sooo good. nice little nod to the pilot.
2)Becoming Part 2 - Buffy saving the world by killing the man she loves, JUST as he gets his soul back AND gets kicked out of her house. Where are the tissues?
3)Something Blue - just a hysterical episode where everything that could go wrong goes wrong. Plus, Giles is blind.
4)Band Candy - Giles and Joyce as teenagers? priceless

Joshua Wed, Oct 19, 2005 at 09:15 PM EST

Those are the classics, but I love The Wish as well as The Prom. The Prom gets me all misty every time. :-p

Dustin Wed, Oct 19, 2005 at 07:31 PM EST

good god, where do i start????? I am so getting that whole buffy set that comes out in november, cant wait, but i would never, EVER make a buffy list and not include Hush(season 4) and The Body(season 5), and Once More With Feeling(season 6) 3 of the finest episodes in television history....

Rob Konitzer Wed, Oct 19, 2005 at 05:46 PM EST

I agree that The Body, Hush and Once More With Feeling are were groundbreaking television. OMWF wouldn't be on Aly's list because she's not much of a singer.

Other definate faves:
1. Surprise/Innocence - I've gotten lots of people hooked on Buffy by showing them these episodes.
2. The Zeppo - the one that hooked me. I just loved that they would blow off the whole apocalypse storyline to focus on Zander.
3. Tabula Rasa - hilarious... and heartbreaking. I can't hear "Goodbye to You" without thinking of it.
4. Passion - Angel at his most evil.
5. Conversations with Dead People - could only have been better if they could have gotten Amber Benson back like originally planned.

Joey Wed, Oct 19, 2005 at 05:34 PM EST

The Body, Hush, and Once More With Feeling are the most distict episodes. I really want EW to do an episode guide for Buffy. Or any show, I just really want an episode guide.
