Ellen DeGeneres on 'American Idol' tonight: What are your expectations?

There’s been a lot of ink spilled about Ellen DeGeneres’ American Idol debut tonight, where, as part of the Hollywood Week proceedings, she’ll take over the Chair Formerly Occupied by America’s Wackiest Twitterer. Admittedly, I was resistant to the idea of Ellen as Idol judge when the news was first announced back in September, but a lot of my opinion was based on her painful guest-judging stint on So You Think You Can Dance last summer. Since then, the comedian/talk-show host has repeatedly stated that she’ll take her Idol role more seriously. In fact, here’s what she had to say about criticism of her SYTYCD performance in an EW cover story last month written by my colleague Dave ‘Oscar Watch’ Karger:

“I just wanted to go see the show, and suddenly I was asked if I want to be a judge. And I’m like, ‘Well, those are better seats — I’ll be a judge.’ I just thought it would be interesting, and then I thought, ‘Oh, I have to actually critique them.’ I don’t know anything about dance, so I just really did focus on making it funny. But it’s a totally different thing [from] singing. And I will be funny [on Idol] — if something’s obnoxious or stupid and there’s a joke to be made, that’s what I do first and foremost. But I’ll have more to say about a singer — with singing, it’ll be funny, but there will also be true, honest critiquing.”

So maybe there’s reason to be a little hopeful about Ellen on Idol. Because while she might not have the music-industry background of Kara or Randy, she does have two things in common with Simon that Table Banger and One-Zillion Percent do not: (Read full post)

Google Buzz: Buzzworthy?

Categories: Gadgets, News, Tech

Google unveiled its next foray into social media today: Google Buzz. It’s a sharing functionality built right into Gmail, and it looks pretty.

And pretty darn familiar. Gee, what is that other thing that matches up with my Gmail contacts, where we…share stuff…not just with friends but with everyone… hm… Oh right: The whole Internet Twitter and Facebook.

That said, e-mail existed before Gmail, I used AIM and iChat before Gchat launched — hell, I used Yahoo! before I used Google in the first place. Google doesn’t need to be first, it just needs to be better, easier, more intuitive, and more useful. Er…easy peasy?

I’m most pleased that I will now have some way to keep track of all my dorked-out status messages from Gmail. I change mine several times a day, as an incredibly lame point of pride (I’m def going to die alone), so at least now when I’m searching for that stupid letter-dropping game that I know I linked to somehow, it’ll actually show up. (It was that, btw).

Are you a-buzz, PopWatchers?

Emma Watson is richer than Kristen Stewart (and 26 other Hollywood big shots)

She’s rich, beyotch! Yep, the lovely British actress who plays Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter films raked in some serious cash in 2009. According to a new Vanity Fair report, Watson earned more than any other female entertainer last year: $30 million, or $15 million for each Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows movies. She came in at No. 14, just below Denzel Washington and above her Potter costar Rupert Grint. (He also earned $30 million, so I’m guessing VF placed him lower because they consider him less popular/bankable. Potter himself, Daniel Radcliffe, came in at No. 6.) On VF’s list of 40 — which is topped by Michael Bay and his $125 million payday — Watson easily outranked Sarah Jessica Parker (No. 24), Angelina Jolie (No. 32), Sandra Bullock (No. 34), and even Twilight’s Kristen Stewart (No. 37). The only other woman who came close to her ranking is No. 19, Cameron Diaz.

The idea of someone that young — Watson is just 19! — having that much money to her name is sort of mind-blowing. And if she weren’t so classy, it’d be pretty damn scary. But as the red carpet darling has proven over the last year especially, she is no Hollywood trainwreck-in-the-making. Watson is poised, mature, and smart. She wears underwear! And hello! Tuition is ridiculously expensive, so we can take comfort knowing that some of that $30 mil will be well spent — at the Brown University comptroller’s office! The rest she can spend on textbooks and rounds of drinks for her new college friends.

What do you think of Watson emerging as the highest-paid female entertainer of 2009? Will she be able to keep the title in 2010? If not, who will succeed her?

Frances Reid of 'Days of our Lives': Remembering the soap treasure who played Alice Horton

Categories: In Memoriam, News, Television

Frances Reid, who played Days of Our Lives loving matriarch Alice Horton for more than 40 years, passed away yesterday at the age of 95. She hasn’t had a beefy storyline for some time, but she made appearances on the show up until 2007, and just knowing that she was somewhere, even off-camera, with a dish of donuts and wise word of advice, made Salem feel like home. Of course, Salem hasn’t felt like the old Salem for quite a while now (I forgave them for The Island and even the serial killer stories, but John and Marlena’s exit early last year was the last straw), and with many people sounding the death knell for the whole daytime drama genre, it’s all-the-more sad to see this Lifetime Achievement Emmy-winning soap opera treasure — who also had early-career stints on As the World Turns and The Edge of Night — leave us. At least we can look forward to what had better be a heartfelt tribute on Days that brings together Julie, Maggie, Jennifer, Hope, and all the other remaining Hortons to say goodbye to our beloved Gran.

Zach Galifianakis heading to 'SNL'?

Zach Galifianakis is set to host SNL on March 6, according to the Twitter stream maintained on his behalf. NBC would neither confirm nor deny a hosting schedule this far in advance, they said, and a rep for Galifianakis claimed that the Twitter feed isn’t official, even though it’s linked from his website, and mentioned in his newsletter.

Anyway, all together now: “Hell, yes!” if it’s true. Indeed our own Annie Barrett wished for this exact host mere months ago. Galifianakis is hilarious, and anyone who’s seen him live knows he can play the piano and sing, too.

I’m hoping Galifianakis gets to play an ’80s movie villain, or a gutsy hero, or a flummoxed regular dude — you know, the stuff he doesn’t play in movies. What do you want to see him do on SNL, PopWatchers?

Does Beyonce really deserve a Razzie nomination for 'Obsessed?'

Beyonce can do no wrong in my book. She is a star. She’s the real deal. For further evidence of her awesomeness, I ask you to watch her performance at last night’s Grammys. But I also think she’s actually a decent actress. Personally, I thought she was sorely underrated in Dreamgirls, giving a much quieter performance amidst flashy turns by Eddie Murphy and Jennifer Hudson. And I thought she was kinda perfect for Obsessed and hardly deserving of the Worst Actress Razzie nomination bestowed upon her today (For the record, Ali Larter also should NOT have been nominated for Worst Supporting Actress. She was a campy delight.). The movie is a total guilty pleasure and, on that level, it works. Plus, you HAVE to give Beyonce credit for delivering a line like “You think you’re crazy? I’ll show you crazy!” with a straight face. Also, the epic catfight between her and Larter at the end redeems any bad moments in the movie, as far as I’m concerned. I mean Beyonce head butts Larter! Come on! Who doesn’t love that?

Do you agree, PopWatchers? Did you think Beyonce was good in Obsessed?

Who Killed Miss America?

miss-americaImage Credit: http://img2.timeinc.net/ew/dynamic/imgs/100126/miss-america_510.jpgIn 1991, when Katie Stam was just 5 years old, growing up in Seymour, Ind., you could spy the pint-size beauty cutting cereal boxes into princess crowns and fashioning sashes out of thick ribbons with her favorite cousin. You could also spy Stam, in mid-September of that year, watching her beloved Miss America pageant on NBC with 26.7 million other television viewers. “We would pretend we were Miss America,” she remembers fondly, noting that her family gathered around the television annually for the show. “We had the most amazing connection with the pageant. It was such a big deal to us.” And to the rest of the country. The Miss America pageant was a true television event, close to the Oscars and the Super Bowl.

No longer. When current Miss America Stam, now 23, traded in her homemade crown for the real deal last January on TLC, only 3.5 million viewers tuned in, a stunning drop of 87 percent from when she was a little girl. And now, tonight at 8 p.m. on TLC, Stam will relinquish her title as a new Miss America is crowned. The question is, will anyone notice? The pageant’s days of dominating watercooler conversations are long gone. (Read full post)

Apple's iPad tablet is officially here

Categories: Gadgets, News, Tech

Steve Jobs, in his typical black turtleneck and jeans, took the stage in San Francisco today to a standing ovation from the Apple faithful. He promised to unveil some “truly magical products,” and he did: the iPad, Apple’s long-awaited tablet computer.

Jobs called the tablet a “third category” that had to be “better than a laptop and better than a smartphone.” He demoed web surfing, e-mail (in two panels), the touch-screen iPhone-esque keyboard, iTunes, iPhoto, and video.

“When we set out to develop the iPad, we not only had very ambitious technical goals and user interface goals, we had very aggressive price goals,” Jobs said. “We want to put this in the hands of lots of people. … We have met our cost goals. I am thrilled to announce that iPad pricing starts at $499.(Read full post)

CBS stands behind controversial Tim Tebow Super Bowl ad; Women's groups continue to protest

Categories: News, Super Bowl

This year, the most talked-about Super Bowl ad won’t likely feature dancing lizards, a steaming hot Cindy Crawford, or a talking baby. Nope, judging by early reaction, it will involve Florida Gators football star Tim Tebow, his mother, and possibly a pro-life message.

The spot — brought to CBS by the Christian organization Focus on the Family — is expected to share the story behind Tebow’s birth: Apparently, his mother refused to have an abortion after being advised by doctors to do so while she was pregnant with Tebow. The ad has caused an uproar among pro-choice advocates, who claim the Super Bowl — the most-watched event of the year — is an inappropriate place to invite political debate. Not to mention put a large percentage of its viewing public in danger. (Read full post)

'Pants on the Ground' invades Canadian politics

There was a time when politicians resolved their differences honorably by trying to shoot each other at dawn. But apparently Canadian politician and New Brunswick legislature member TJ Burke is too fancy pants to follow the example of Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton. Well, too “Pants on the Ground,” anyway. Yes, last Friday, Burke attempted to make a political point by performing “General” Larry Platt’s ditty. Check out the clip below and tell us what you think. Personally, I haven’t seen anything like it since Gerald Ford interrupted his 1975 State of the Union speech to perform the drum solo from Led Zep’s “Moby Dick.”
