moyer-paquinImage Credit: Jason Merritt/Getty Images Who says celebrities only care about themselves? At last night’s 2010 Entertainment Weekly and Women In Film Pre-Emmy Party, some of television’s biggest stars came out to honor this year’s female Primetime Emmy nominees.

Attendees at the party, sponsored by L’Oreal Paris, included True Blood stars Anna Paquin, Stephen Moyer, and Joe Manganiello; Jon Hamm and Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men); Mark Salling and Jayma Mays (Glee); Glenn Close (Damages); Sharon Stone; Connie Britton (Friday Night Lights); Kathy Griffin (My Life on the D-List); and Modern Family co-creator Steve Levitan.

Modern Family star Jesse Tyler Ferguson, who’s nominated along with Glee‘s Chris Colfer in the Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy category, says he doesn’t see himself as competition: READ FULL STORY »

'Lie to Me': 'Veronica Mars' star Jason Dohring goes psycho

Filed under: Television, TV and tagged: ,

lie-to-meImage Credit: Adam Rose/FoxI don’t watch Fox’s Lie to Me regularly, but I tuned in for last night’s spring premiere because of two words: Jason Dohring. Veronica Mars fans know what I’m talking about. Dohring played Logan Echolls, Veronica’s on- and off-again boyfriend on the cult series for three years. But before he was The Love Interest, Logan was the obligatory psychotic jackass. A troubled son of movie star parents who drank a lot (mom Lisa Rinna) and beat him (dad Harry Hamlin!). Pretty early on, Dohring’s performance and his prickly relationship with Veronica were stealing the show out from every other guy on the series. Joss Whedon even put him on his list of Top 25 TV Characters.

So it’s safe to say I was looking forward to his guest spot on Lie to Me, where his character, charming psychology grad student Martin Walker, was sort of like Logan Echolls if he’d gone down a very dark and twisted path. Martin proved to be a worthy foe to human lie detector Lightman (Tim Roth), even besting him during a class demonstration. Lightman saw revulsion in Martin’s face when he described a picture of a pretty girl and arousal at the sight of a tied up man, causing Lightman to wrongly label both lies. It wasn’t that Martin was just good — he was a psychopath and a killer, Lightman determined. And he was right. Martin likes to woo pretty girls before waterboarding them! READ FULL STORY »

'10 Things I Hate About You': What would have been in season two

Filed under: Television and tagged:

10-things-I-hateImage Credit: Patrick Wymore/ABC FamilyFor fans of ABC Family’s canceled series 10 Things I Hate About You, the Monday blahs are worse than usual. Where once fans had snappy dialogue, romance, and Ethan Peck to look forward to on Monday evenings, now there is just the empty void left by cancellation.

“I was telling someone it feels kind of like a breakup,” 10 Things creator Carter Covington tells EW.com. “Like you got dumped by this person and you’re like, ‘Wait a second. But we had such a great thing going on. Why would you dump me?’” Before you start writing angry letters to ABC Family, know that Covington doesn’t blame the network. “I know they loved the show,” he says, adding, “I think they were in a difficult, difficult position to try to figure out how to market and bring back one half-hour comedy by itself.”

For those frustrated by the series finale’s many cliffhangers, Covington sends his apologies: “It’s really hard for me because there’s nothing I would wish more than to have been able to have a series finale that really provided some closure for everybody.” Even though that was impossible — production wrapped before the cancellation axe came down — Covington is satisfied with how things ended. “In the life of the series, to me, Kat and Patrick were always going to run off into the sunset together,” he says. “In a way, I’m happy that the series ended where it did because at least they were together.”

But what about all the cliffhangers?! Unfortunately, we’ll never see them play out. Nor will Ethan Peck be piercing through the TV screen every Monday. “I think that might be what my contribution to history is — bringing Ethan Peck into the consciousness of America,” Convington laughs. But we’ve got the next best thing. Covington shared with EW.com what was in store for Kat, Bianca, Patrick, Joey, Cameron, and the rest of Padua High’s student body. Let’s break it down cliffhanger by cliffhanger: READ FULL STORY »

MTV Movie Awards 2010: What you didn't see on TV

wahlberg-ferrellImage Credit: Kevin Mazur/WireImage.comIf you watched the MTV Movie Awards telecast last night, you saw a lot of Twilight actors, some girl-on-girl action, a lot of leg, and a very different side of Tom Cruise. And, of course,  Sandra Bullock continued to own us all. But here’s what you didn’t see on TV:

– Just as the show cut to a commercial break, The Other Guys’ Mark Wahlberg, still suspended by a harness above the stage, wrapped his legs around costar Will Ferrell from behind and pretended to, um, do something I can’t print here. Hint: Just add an “ing” to that expletive heard every two seconds during Peter Facinelli’s acceptance speech.

– Speaking of… READ FULL STORY »

ABC Family picks up 'Friday Night Lights' reruns. Touchdown!

Filed under: News, Television and tagged: ,

friday-night-lightsABC Family has acquired the cable syndication rights to the brilliant, but ratings-challenged Friday Night Lights, The Wrap reports. The cable network will air all five seasons of the show from the start beginning this September. No, you didn’t jump in time and miss a season. The show’s currently airing its fourth season on NBC, but was already renewed for a 13-episode fifth season as part of the NBC-DirecTV partnership that repeatedly saved the show from cancellation. The fifth and final season will air on DirecTV this fall before it premieres on NBC in 2011.

ABC Family’s rebroadcasts sound like the perfect way to relieve the glory of the first season or check out what all the fuss is about before the series signs off. Perhaps the move will even get some people to finally realize the show is not about football. That’s just the engine that drives the stories about life, love, work, duty, money, racism and, yes, family. Friday Night Lights is more grounded than ABC Family’s newer fare, but it should still fit in nicely with the network’s “a new kind of family” lineup, which includes reruns of Gilmore Girls. Now, if only they could bring back reruns of Everwood.

PopWatchers, will you tune in to relive Friday Night Lights from the beginning on ABC Family? Any newbies plan on checking it out?

'Glee' goes Gaga tonight. We're gaga for Brittany.

Filed under: Glee, Television and tagged: ,

The surprise superstar of Glee‘s spring season isn’t Jonathan Groff or Idina Menzel, although the talent of both cannot be denied. No, it’s Heather Morris, who plays the hilarious, daffy cheerleader Brittany. While I’m excited for tonight’s Lady Gaga-packed episode — the cast’s performance of “Bad Romance” at the recent Glee Live! concert was fantastic — I’m far more excited to hear what Brittany will say next. Morris’ line delivery is spot-on, the girl can move — she was a backup dancer for Beyoncé! — and Joss Whedon loves Brittany, according to the “Meet Heather Morris” video below. Other things we learn:

1. Cory Monteith’s jerky does not impress her. No, that’s not a euphemism.

2. Co-executive producer Ian Brennan has been discouraging her from taking acting lessons. “Don’t fix what ain’t broke,” he says.

3. Morris can sing! Or so she says. Unlike Naya Rivera (Santana), who got to sing two songs at Glee Live!, Morris hasn’t gotten a chance to sing on the show yet. With both Rivera and Morris being upped to regulars next season, her singing debut seems inevitable and Morris has a song picked out: “…Baby One More Time” from that other Britney. READ FULL STORY »

'Glee' Live!: Sue Sylvester does not approve, but we do

Filed under: Glee, Television and tagged: , ,

glee-liveImage Credit: Kevin Winter/Getty ImagesI think I’m a little deaf now, PopWatchers. Glee Live! came to the Gibson Amphitheater in Los Angeles this weekend, and the audience at Saturday’s matinée show was very gleeful indeed. It’s one thing to watch the show at home or talk about it with friends the next day or tweet about it. But to experience it live with thousands of other people? It’s, well, deafening, and a testament to the Glee phenomenon. The crowd at the kid-friendly matinée show proved Glee truly is universal, attracting everyone from little kids and their chaperons to teenagers to adults and even a woman carrying a baby. Welcome to the world, kid. I hope you brought your earplugs. Also spotted in the audience: Glee creator Ryan Murphy, signing autographs and taking pictures with fans. READ FULL STORY »

'Friday Night Lights' stars land new shows. Where's Connie Britton's show?

Connie-BrittonImage Credit: Justin Stephens/NBCOne of the best parts of upfronts week is finding out which of your favorite actors will be back on TV in the fall with new shows. Sometimes, the returning faces have been long absent from the small screen. (Keri Russell, we missed you so!) Other times, it makes the end of one great show a little more bearable. Take Friday Night Lights, which is in production on its fifth and likely last season. Several cast members are already preparing for the end. FNL alum Adrianne Palicki plays one of two wives to a Texas con artist in Fox’s Lonestar. New cast members Jurnee Smollett and Matt Lauria have also lined up new shows. Smollett stars opposite Jim Belushi and Jerry O’Connell in CBS’ The Defenders. Lauria costars in Shawn Ryan’s Ride-Along, which will air midseason on Fox. Several FNL alums also had pilots that weren’t picked up: Scott Porter (Nomads), Minka Kelly (Mad Love), and Zach Gilford (Matadors). And Kyle Chandler passed on the lead in Steven Spielberg’s Terra Nova pilot for Fox.

But one name is missing from that paragraph: Friday Night Lights’ MVP Connie Britton. Never has the saying, “Behind every great man there’s a great woman,” been truer than when it comes to Coach (Chandler) and Mrs. Coach (Britton). Maybe scheduling didn’t permit time to shoot a pilot. Perhaps Britton wants to take a break or pursue movies after the show signs off. But I can’t help being selfish and wanting her on my TV every week. It may be too late to jump abroad a pilot, but I still have some unsolicited advice for Britton’s next TV role: READ FULL STORY »

'Being Erica' renewed for season 3, but sans boyfriends!

Filed under: News, Television and tagged:

Being-EricaImage Credit: Temple Street Prod/SoapNetThe folks on Lost will be time-jumping no more in less than two weeks, but PopWatch’s other favorite time-traveling series will be back. Canadian broadcaster CBC and SoapNet simultaneously announced today that Being Erica has been renewed for a third season! The series will return with 13 episodes this fall on CBC before premiering in early 2011 on SoapNet.

Last season’s finale found Erica struggling with her feelings for fellow time-travel therapy patient Kai and the gnawing feeling that boyfriend Ethan was holding her back. In any other series, Ethan or Kai would have been Erica’s soulmate, but the show boldly had Erica end up single again after breaking things off with Ethan. Meanwhile, Kai returned to the future where he was from, leaving present Kai with no memory of Erica. Judging from the CBC’s press release, it seems the guys are not only out of Erica’s life, but also out of the show: READ FULL STORY »

New 'Burn Notice' trailer burns down the house

Filed under: Television and tagged: ,

Summer is just around the corner, so that can only mean one thing: Burn Notice is almost back! While I’ll take Burn Notice any time I can get, including during its winter run, the show just feels like a summer series with its Miami setting and no shortage of teenie weenie bikini clad ladies. (How about some equal opportunity ogling, Burn Notice?)

USA Network has released a new trailer to wet your appetite for the June 3 premiere. There’s the always reliable Fiona ready to call in the cavalry and new enemies, but sadly, no sign of new cast members Robert Wisdom or Coby Bell, all set to the Talking Heads’ “Burning Down the House.” But does it beat the use of “Some Like It Hot” in a trailer from earlier this year? Let’s compare: READ FULL STORY »
