Heidi Klum's upcoming maternity line goes for unitard-chic

When I watch the judges on Project Runway dis a contestant’s design, I sometimes think to myself, “OK, Heidi or Nina, why don’t you try to design a ball gown out of waste materials and surge protectors yourself?” Well, perhaps Klum heard my protests because she’s throwing herself into the designer ring with her own line of maternity clothes—with slightly more traditional materials (i.e. polyester)—that debuts this Friday. The model-turned-host was on ABC’s Good Morning America today to give viewers a sneak peek.

The line is pretty standard fare — stretchy pants and billowy tops — and even includes a more price-friendly line for Motherhood Maternity that incorporates Klum’s hand-painted designs. But the gem of the collection, at least according to Klum, is the unitard, which elicited an “Oh. My. Goodness!” from GMA host Juju Chang, who was pregnant herself two years ago, that was filled with equal parts horror and jealousy.

Klum raves about the comfort of the unitard but, even though I’m not pregnant, I imagine it must be quite a doozy to go to the bathroom with one on. And if that isn’t impractical enough, the line also includes blob-like leopard print that might as well be accessorized with a “baby on board” sign.

If I had to pick, I’d go for the the tamer, if not more boring, floral prints that Klum painted herself.

What do you guys think of the preview? Would you buy the clothes or get them for the baby-bound woman in your life?

Laugh tracks: Love 'em or leave 'em?

What would happen if we lived in a world without a laugh track? Beyond the obvious notion that everyone on sitcoms would be sad and depressed, it would make things totally awkward. This fact was highlighted by The Hollywood Reporter posting this clip from The Big Bang Theory without its usual laugh track:

Those long, drawn-out silences are painful, but not as painful as watching this slightly funny, slightly twisted clip from a laugh track-enhanced version of The Shining: (Read full post)

Emma Watson debuts eco-clothing line collaboration

It’s no secret that we have a pretty big style crush on Emma Watson, and in addition to fashion week fixture and Burberry model, the Harry Potter actress can add designer to her resume — and we can add another level of sartorial envy to our obsession.

Watson has teamed up with British fair-trade label People Tree for an eco-friendly men’s and women’s knitwear collection, which includes tees, dresses, skirts, and shorts. Coming from the new It-girl of edgy classics (see here and here), this collaboration seems like a more sensible design initiative than, say, an actress and a line of leggings. Just sayin’.

Eighty percent of the capsule collection uses 100 percent organic cotton, and to top it off, all proceeds go to the People Tree Foundation, which directly benefits fair-trade farmers and artisans in developing countries. The first pieces from Watson’s line are hot off the press today at People Tree’s site.

Scanning through the collection of simple pieces, I’m jonesing for the Oxford Cricket jumper (How much more British can you get than those three words?) and the Cambridge blazer. What do you guys thinks of the collection? Would you style yourself with Watson’s designs?

Grammys: Elton John and Lady Gaga's sunglasses, to bling or not to bling?

The Grammys is known to have a more pizazz-filled dress code than most awards shows and last night’s opening act—a magical duet between Lady Gaga and Elton John—was a perfect example of the ceremony’s love for all things crazy. In the Grammys opening number, John and Gaga joined forces at the piano, but not without some lavish costumes. John took the simple route in a Giorgio Armani tuxedo, while Gaga donned a shoulder-heavy green glittery costume custom-made by the designer. But you’d better believe that John, the original master of fantastical stage garb, wasn’t about to let Gaga have all the fun. So he joined the sparkle parade and accessorized with totally nutty, but totally amazing Swarovski-encrusted glasses, also custom-made by Armani, that probably caused some vision discrepancies.

Creating the tricked-out shades must’ve been a cinch for Armani, who seems to count Gaga as a muse of sorts. “We hear Lady Gaga’s music everywhere we go,” he said. “It is like a soundtrack of our times. In addition to her formidable songwriting skills, she is a modern fashion phenomenon.”

Being a friend to all things shiny, I would totally rock these sunglasses, so long as I don’t have to actually see anything. Would you wear them?

Jeff Probst remembers 'Survivor: Palau' contestant Jennifer Lyon

Categories: In Memoriam, News, Survivor

As Survivor’s 20th season approaches, one of the series’ stars, Jennifer Lyon, who placed fourth in the Palau season, lost her battle with stage-three breast cancer Tuesday at age 37. Survivor host Jeff Probst developed an instantaneous connection with Lyon, and with contributions from Lyon’s family, he shared this story about their friendship:

“Jenn and I got reconnected a couple of years ago and became very close, very fast. She shared with me the highs and the lows and the constant choices she and her family faced regarding her treatment.

“When you cut through the social barriers that so often hamper us, it’s amazing how quickly you can become close with someone. Jenn made it very easy. She didn’t have any interest in wasting time. (Read full post)

Emeril Lagasse's new talk show: A good idea...ten years ago!

It’s a bit ironic that amidst all the late-night wars that a new show gets the green light. Announced today, Emeril Lagasse will be hosting his own live talk show on ION (Sundays, 8 p.m.) when he’ll do the couch thing (schmooze with celebrities) and the cooking thing (BAM!). For a chef who enjoyed his heyday in the ’00s, doesn’t this all seem kind of late?

It’s been nearly 10 years since America was captivated by the ragin’ Cajun and his signature phrases, like “Kick it up a notch.” In fact, the Food Network canceled Emeril Live in 2007, and let’s not forget the self-titled NBC sitcom he starred in with Robert Urich that was widely panned and canceled after just a few episodes. (Padma Lakshmi, you’ve been warned!)

Lagasse may still be around—he hosts Essence of Emeril on the Food Network and his own call-in radio show on SIRIUS XM—but he feels almost retro at this point. (God, I feel old.) Looking at TV’s culinary landscape now, the chefs on everyone’s plates right now are more in the vein of Gordon Ramsey, Tom Colicchio and even Martha Stewart. (Martha will always be tops.)

Even Rachael Ray seems a bit dated these days as she roasts chicken with Penn Badgley or makes meatballs with the cast of The Jersey Shore. (OK, that, we’d watch.) Either way, both Lagasse and Ray seem part of a different (a.k.a. older) generation of TV chefs/personalities and watching them do the talk show thing feels like a big old snooze to me.

What do you think of Lagasse’s new talk show? Would you watch it?

Style Hunter: Daniel Day-Lewis' sunglasses from 'Nine'

We told you about Kate Hudson’s Breakfast at Tiffany’s-inspired glasses from Nine, but many of you have been asking at the shades Guido Contini a.k.a. Daniel Day-Lewis sports in pretty much every scene of the movie. To capture the retro-Italian vibe, it comes with little surprise that costume designer Colleen Atwood chose a vintage frame.

But just because it’s a one-of-a-kind doesn’t mean you can’t capture the same look. Try Ray-Ban’s RB4140 in glossy black/crystal green or demi brown/polarized grey (ray-ban.com; $119).

Matt LeBlanc auditions to play...Matt LeBlanc

As our TV sleuth Michael Ausiello reported Saturday from TCA, Showtime unveiled a preview for their new Matt LeBlanc series, Episodes, with this hilarious clip in which the producers ask the Friends actor to audition for the role of…himself (caution: language NSFW:

This makes me forgive LeBlanc (a little) for Joey. The best part, hands-down, has to be the room of leather-clad actor wannabes rehearsing “How you doin’?” Also, LeBlanc’s silver streaks? I like!

If this clip is any indication, Episodes is exactly the fresh comedy an ex-Must See TV star needs. It looks like our former Friends are taking the Julia Louis-Dreyfus route of post-sitcom stardom. First there was Lisa Kudrow (The Comeback, R.I.P.), then Courteney Cox Arquette (Cougar Town), now LeBlanc and most recently Matthew Perry with his newly announced ABC show.

What do you guys think of the clip? Does it make you excited for Episodes?

'Top Chef' secrets revealed: From the judges' mouths to your ears

This weekend, The New York Times hosted its ninth annual Arts & Leisure weekend, where bold-faced names like Natalie Portman and Angela Lansbury (!) chatted with Times staffers about their careers, creative processes and pop culture as a whole. Sounds pretty artsy, eh? Yes, but it was also a vault of gossip!

I attended a conversation between Top Chef’s Padma Lakshmi and Gail Simmons and renowned chef Eric Ripert, who all spoke with former Times restaurant critic Frank Bruni about the show, which resumes taping in the spring once Padma delivers her baby, and what it takes to be a top chef. The best stuff to come out of this program, though, was the behind-the-scenes scoop. Here, some of the best bits:

Chocolate and chicken liver don’t mix: The worst dish Eric Ripert, who has made a total of five appearances on Top Chef, ever ate on the show was Ilan’s chocolate ganache with chicken liver on season 2. Padma added: “It had a rubbery, spring action, and we had to eat it. That’s the thing about our jobs.” (Read full post)
