Astronauts wanted for Mars settlement reality show -- No, really!

We all know that climate change and increasingly severe weather here on earth have us all in a bit of a pickle. So the logical solution is to pick up and bounce on out of here, right? Maybe even set up shop on Mars.

We’re being a little flippant, but that’s the mission of Mars One, a legit organization with real funding and NASA astronauts as consultant, and you could be a part of it – if you are “at least 18 years of age, have a deep sense of purpose, willingness to build and maintain healthy relationships, the capacity for self-reflection and ability to trust,” that is.

Announced last year, Mars One hopes to establish a human settlement on the Red Planet in 2023, and will develop a reality TV show based on its mission.

Indeed, the reality show will help fund, in large part, Mars One’s (ahem!) $6 billion mission. According to its website, broadcasting rights of the training, launch of the astronauts and their residence on Mars, handled through its Interplanetary Media Group, will be spent on the “Human Mission to Mars.”

“This will be one of the biggest events in human history,” Bas Lansdorp, co-founder and chief executive officer of Mars One, told the New York Times in March. “We are talking about creating a major media spectacle, much bigger than the moon landings or the Olympics, and with huge potential for revenues coming from TV rights and sponsorships.”

Not convinced a realty TV show, even a worldwide, multiyear one, will be able to drum up that kind of money? To that, Lansdorp has a question of his own: “How many people do you think would want to watch the first humans arrive on Mars?”

It’s not a bad point.

While the organization has announced the qualities it is looking for in an astronaut, it has not yet announced its application process, saying only that “the astronaut selection program will start in the first half of 2013.”

Well, it looks like the big reveal is finally upon us. So if you are looking to be among the first to populate another planet, the line starts on Monday in New York, where Mars One will officially launch its astronaut application program during a news conference.
