General consensus: Earpiece or no earpiece, Beyoncé crushed it at the inauguration yesterday. (UPDATE: Maybe!)
That explains why the cover of today’s New York Post printed the headline “First Couple” alongside a photo of music’s undisputed power couple. The joke, of course, being that — all due respect to the Obamas — every inauguration attendee was really most excited to snap a picture of Bey and Jay. Well… almost every one.
As Buzzfeed points out, in the Post photo Rep. Peter King (far right) happily joined in the DIY paparazzi moment. Only problem: King later tweeted that he had no clue who the nice man escorting Beyoncé was. “Anybody who looked important I took a picture of at inauguration. I didn’t know who the guy beside @Beyonce was,” he explained, linking to the Post cover.
Pro tip to King: When you hear someone refer to Hova, that’s another name for Jay-Z, a.k.a. the multimillionaire rap mogul who just happens to be one of the most influential faces in music. “99 Problems”? That’s a Jay-Z reference. Blue Ivy’s dad? Sports team and NYC club owner? Yup, that’s him too.
But King wasn’t the only politico who embarrassed himself yesterday. Turns out, correctly identifying people is harder than it looks. While name-checking people in a crowd shot from the event, ABC newser George Stephanopoulos said on camera, “That’s Morgan Freeman, I think.” He was actually looking at NBA Hall of Famer Bill Russell. Oops!
Stewart and Colbert are going to have to make some tough choices tonight.
