'Call of Duty: Black Ops 2' tops $1 billion in 15 days

The newest installment in Activision’s hugely popular Call of Duty series, Black Ops II, has grossed $1 billion in just 15 days, making it the fastest-selling video game of all time.

The previous record-holder, 2011’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, reached $1 billion in 16 days. Activision would also like to point out that Avatar, the highest-grossing film of all time, took 17 days make as much.

“Since Call of Duty was launched, cumulative franchise revenues from players around the world are greater than current worldwide box office receipts to date for the top-10 grossing films of 2012 combined,” Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick said in statement. “Life-to-date sales for the Call of Duty franchise have exceeded worldwide theatrical box office receipts for Harry Potter and Star Wars, the two most successful movie franchises of all time.”

Apparently people prefer fictional simulated warfare to fictional wizards and fictional spaceships. But it’s worth noting that long-term sales of Black Ops II may only be even with, or down from, last year. Arvind Bhatia, an analyst for brokerage firm Sterne Agee, told GamesIndustry, “We think the current sales curve suggests CoD: Black Ops II unit sales in its first year could ultimately be down 10 percent to 15 percent year-over-year.”

Not that it isn’t impressive. The game broke another launch record when it grossed $500 million in its first 24 hours. So by most accounts, Black Ops II is a massive success.
