Daniel Craig, Javier Bardem on their flirtatious scene in 'Skyfall'

For 50 years, James Bond has been a heterosexual icon, a dashing, promiscuous charmer who rubs elbows — and other body parts — with gorgeous women with names like Pussy Galore and Honey Rider. Yet there’s a scene in Daniel Craig’s latest outing as 007 that adds a new wrinkle to his legendary sexuality.

Craig returns as Bond in next month’s Skyfall, which will see the MI6 agent tangle with Javier Bardem’s feathery-haired villain Silva. The actors were on hand for two separate press conferences yesterday, where they each discussed a charged scene in which Silva runs a hand down Bond’s chest while he’s bound to a chair (see the photo above). 007 takes the caress in stride, responding, “What makes you think this is my first time?”

A reporter with Movieline asked Craig whether or not this line was meant as a bluff. “What are you going to do?” Craig joked, before adding, “I don’t see the world in sexual divisions. … Someone suggested that Silva may be gay. And I’m like, I think he’ll f–k anything.” For his part, Bardem thinks Silva’s sexuality is “part of the game,” but not all of it. He went on to explain: “[I]t was more about putting the other person in a very uncomfortable situation where even James Bond doesn’t know how to get out of it.”

So it appears as though the line in question is nothing more than a game. Craig has said previously that he has no desire to see the secret agent take up with a man, but who knows what could be in store for future Bond actors or Bond films. How would a gay or bisexual 007 impact the legacy of the character?
