Twitter was down. I repeat, Twitter was down! Not even the dreaded Fail Whale was on hand to comfort tweeters when the social-networking site failed to load for somewhere between one and two hours this afternoon. Though Alec Baldwin was probably wringing his hands, other social media sites experienced a bump as a temporary anti-Twitter coalition rejoiced in the site’s folly.
While Mashable posted an adorable dig (pictured above) on its Facebook page, many members of the Google+ contingent were quick to taunt disgruntled tweeters. For example, this open letter (posted by Buzzfeed):
Google+ is not just the place you come to report that Twitter is down. Real Plussers don’t care.
If you want to participate on G+, participate ON G+. Otherwise, hushup about Twitter.
Though the problem mostly appears to be resolved, Twitter did post this status: “Users may be experiencing issues accessing Twitter. Our engineers are currently working to resolve the issue,” then this update: “The issue is on-going and engineers are working to resolve it.” (Ed. note: Indeed, Twitter went down once again as this article posted.)
The site, billed as the simplest and most direct means of communication, regularly experienced similar outages in its early days. As it approaches a possible IPO, the question remains whether Twitter is ready for the big time. Also: Where do broken tweets go?
