Alec Baldwin got into a scrap with a New York Daily News photographer yesterday, and in the last 24 hours, he has been a real class act. His Twitter has been nothing but charm and goodwill for the media. Oh, who are we kidding? This is the man who brought us WordsWithFriendsGate 2011.
The Twitter outburst started almost immediately, with Baldwin tweeting, “A “photographer” almost hit me in the face with his camera this morning.
#allpaparazzishouldbewaterboarded.” He spent an hour attacking Daily News editor Colin Myler and even “the English Queen” herself (our apologies on Baldwin’s behalf, Liz), then posted, “I suppose if the offending paparazzi was wearing a hoodie and I shot him, it would all blow over….” Oof!
Baldwin finished his rant a couple hours later, writing, “It’s sad w the tabloid press. They attempt 2 provoke an incident + when it doesn’t pan out, they say u did it anyway…
Alas, the Emmy winner’s dirge didn’t indeed “blow over.” He tweeted this morning, “15-20 cameramen outside my bldg this am, chasing me on my bike. They’re knocking into ppl on the street, yelling ‘Will you seek help, Alec?'”
It’s not even an argument whether these paparazzi taunts are gross and inappropriate, but what of Baldwin? Does he discredit himself and sink to their level by co-opting a real-life tragedy for a cheap punchline? Are his righteous indignation and professed innocence belied by an online call to torture paparazzi? And why did he have to bring the Queen into this?
Baldwin has struggled with rage issues for many years now, infamously unloading on his tween daughter in a 2007 voice mail, and he clearly hasn’t come very far in the last five years. Celebrities are given a long leash when it comes to antics and out-of-control behavior, but has Baldwin gone too far this time? Sound off below, PopWatchers.
