Sarah Silverman pushes comedy envelope again with abortion tweets

Sarah Silverman is expecting… you to overreact. At least some of you. On Friday, the comedian tweeted a photo of her and her boyfriend, Family Guy writer Alec Sulkin [CORRECTION: The man pictured is comedian Kyle Dunnigan] celebrating as she showcased what almost looked to be the belly of a pregnant mother. (Of course, the caption read, “It’s a burrito!”). A few hours later, she retweeted the same photo next to another shot of her in the same outfit — minus the pregnant-mother belly. This caption was much more provocative: “Got a quickie aborsh in cas R v W gets overturned.”

“R v W,” of course, stands for Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 Supreme Court ruling that granted women the right to choose by legalizing abortion. Last January, Mitt Romney marked the anniversary of the ruling by dedicating himself to reversing the polarizing ruling. “Today marks the 39th anniversary of one of the darkest moments in Supreme Court history, when the court in Roe v. Wade claimed authority over the fundamental question regarding the rights of the unborn,” Romney said in a statement. “Today, we recommit ourselves to reversing that decision, for in the quiet of conscience, people of both political parties know that more than a million abortions a year cannot be squared with the good heart of America.”

Now that Romney’s the presumptive Republican presidential nominee — Saturday Night Live confirmed that — his vow to end legal abortions could become a crucial issue in the upcoming campaign. (President Obama supports a woman’s right to choose.) In 2008, Silverman schlepped for Obama, and her recent tweets could be the first of many political stunts from the comedian as the general election heats up.

This isn’t the first time that Silverman has made politically incorrect jokes about abortion. Her Comedy Central show once featured a montage about her character’s three such operations. Conservative bloggers, not surprisingly, are unamused by the latest gag. A spokesperson for Silverman confirmed that she is not pregnant and the photos were a joke.

What say you, comically-enlightened PopWatchers? Did Silverman cross a line with this stunt? Is she getting exactly the type of reaction she’d hoped for?
