SPOILER ALERT! If you haven’t seen The Hunger Games, stop reading now. If you have, continue on and tell us how many times you teared up during the movie. We’ve made separate polls for people who’d read the book before seeing the film and people who hadn’t. Will it make a difference?
For the record, I got a little misty when Prim (Willow Shields) wailed after Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) volunteered to take her place and said goodbye to her. But Rue’s death scene, of course, is the one that gutted me. It wasn’t her actual passing — we didn’t get to know movie Rue (Amandla Stenberg) as well as we did book Rue. It was Katniss gathering the flowers, then doing the three finger salute into the camera for the people of District 11. I’m tearing up again just thinking about it. (I remember having to put the book down and sob when Katniss received the bread from District 11 and thanked them. Did you miss the bread? In the movie, we saw District 11 start the uprising.)
Your turn. At what moment in Rue’s death scene did your eyes get wet?
