If it ain’t broke, add music to it. Woody Allen is turning Bullets Over Broadway into a tuner that will hit the Great White Way next year. Set in the late 1920s, the comedy follows  an idealistic playwright (portrayed in the film by John Cusack) as he struggles to produce his first play. He accepts funding from a mobster under the stipulation that he cast the gangster’s incompetent moll in the show and then her menacing bodyguard turns out to be a more talented playwright then he is. Bullets, one of Allen’s most beloved films, earned seven Oscar nods and a Best Supporting Actress trophy for Dianne Wiest.

Allen, who co-wrote the film with Douglas McGrath, will pen the book himself. The score will feature existing period music, which if Bullets remains set in the twenties, could mean anything from Louie Armstrong to the Carter Family to “Ol’ Man River.” So get on your spats, perfect your Charleston, and start dancing.
