In a recent interview with IndieWire.com, actor/comedian David Cross described working on Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked– Ghost Protocol: A Game of Shadows — Sorry, but that title is ripe for parody! Ripe! — “the most unpleasant experience I’ve ever had in my professional life.” Meanwhile, EW’s own Adam Markovitz called the third installment in the series, “Nothing more than a cynical stab at grabbing kids’ attention—and, more importantly, their parents’ cash.” (In short, you actually couldn’t pay people enough to want to deal with Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked. Not even some of the people in it.)

While Cross noted that it wasn’t the actors or directors that made it that way, he added “a couple of people” made it a “really awful, unpleasant experience.” (My money’s on it being Alvin, PopWatchers. There’s no question that fame has gotten to his tiny chipmunk head.) But rest easy, never-nudes, Cross doesn’t have the same attitude about his current IFC series The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret  — “…like a paid vacation — or the upcoming return of Arrested Development: “[The entire cast is] verbally committed. No one wants to be the a–hole who ruins it for everyone else. But no one doesn’t want to do it, everyone’s excited.”

Still, as bad as Alvin movie may be (it currently has a 10% on RottenTomatoes.com), is Cross biting the chipmunk hand that fed him? In 2008, he responded to the harsh criticism he received from fans and friends in the industry who thought his appearance in the films killed his cred by saying that he did it for the work, his non-devotion to the franchise, (Alvin and the Chipmunks “holds no precious memories for me to defile”) and more to the point, the money. (“I used my Alvin and the Chipmunks money to pay for [a] down payment.”) Or is Cross, who is one of the very few stars who talks very openly about how they feel about certain projects, simply catching more heat for a subpar film choice than his AD cohorts? (After all, Jason Bateman appeared in Couples Retreat and Michael Cera did Year One.)  Not to mention the fact that Cross’ harsh words will have little to no impact on how it will do at the box office. (Kids, as it turn out, see it for the chipmunks. Kids are strange.) Maybe Cross just needs to sit down and have a chat with an analrapist about this whole thing. What do you think, PopWatchers?
