Taylor Lautner was cemented – quite literally — as a bona fide Hollywood star today. But when people look down at his hand print at Grauman’s, will it say “Taylor Lautner,” but forever read “Jacob From Twilight. You Know, The Kid With The Crazy Abs“?
While his turn in the recent double identity action caper — and box office flop — Abduction might suggest just that, it’s unfair to count Lautner out as a one-trick
werewolf pony yet. While Lautner will be heading into familiar territory with the big screen adaptation of the YA novel Incarceron, as we EW reported last night, he’ll enter the next phase of his career by working with indie darling director Gus Van Sant. (Hey, he helped start Matt Damon’s career! And Smith Jerrod’s!)
So can you envision him as a dramatic actor in an indie? (The Gus Van Sant project, which still has no screenwriter attached, will be adapted from a New Yorker article.) Welcome to the Rileys aside, I’d argue that that genre has served as Kristen Stewart’s strongest non-Twilight outings thus far in her career (see: The Cake Eaters). While Lautner has, unquestionably, the body of an action star, moviegoers might be waiting for his sweet, puppy dog face to chisel à la genre vets like Jason Statham or a Mark Wahlberg. So, in the meantime, indie movies could be the right place for Lautner to stay until he’s furthered matured into his looks, all while maturing his craft along the way.
With the 19-year-old having already tackled teen heartthrob, action hero, and now indie artist, has he already cemented himself as a burgeoning actor or does he still have more to prove? After watching the Funny or Die “Field of Dreams 2” skit, it might not be the worst idea for Lautner to try his hand at comedy again. We can definitely let the SNL hosting thing slide. It was his first time hosting, after all. Now, Valentine’s Day, on the other hand…
But, what do you think, PopWatchers? Is indie the way to go for Taylor Lautner or should he stick to youth-friendly fare? Where does he shine as an actor and which genre, post-Twilight, should he focus on the most? Share in the comments section below.
