In the days and weeks since the passing of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, the world has wondered, “What now? Who will carry on the torch for unbeatable technological innovation and groundbreaking media and business strategies?” Of course, no one may be wondering that more than the high-profile candidates left in Jobs’ shadow, such as Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, Huffington Post Editor-in-Chief Arianna Huffington, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings, and controversial News Corp. chairman Rupert Murdoch. And Saturday Night Live decided to poke a little fun at Jobs’ successors. Only, the sketch never made it to broadcast.
In the skit, which was cut from the Oct. 15 Anna Faris-hosted episode (as Seth Meyers explained via Twitter, “SNL was repeat this week but enjoy Charlie Rose talking Steve Jobs in #CutFromDress sketch”), the four join Charlie Rose (played by the always-reliable Bill Hader) on his show for a roundtable discussion (though “world’s oldest mean girl” Murdoch, played by Fred Armisen, chatted via satellite) about the immeasurable void left behind by Jobs and why they’re not up for the task just yet. What’s surprising isn’t how painfully accurate the jabs in the skit are (Jason Sudeikis as Hastings, once again in a cut SNL Netflix/Qwikster-is-a-failure send-up, puts it, “Comparing Apple to Netflix is like comparing apples to oranges. Especially if the oranges made so many mistakes that people stopped eating oranges and went back to Blockbuster”), it’s that the sketch wasn’t used in the actual episode. For an otherwise disappointing installment, this sketch, which included Andy Samberg as a “dressed-up” Zuckerberg and Nasim Pedrad doing her over-the-top Huffington pronunciations (“Are you seee-rious?”), could have turned things around and served as a fitting way to honor Jobs.

What do you think of the Steve Jobs sketch that got cut from the last Saturday Night Live, PopWatchers? Do you agree that they should have kept it in and maybe scrapped, say, the GOP debate spoof? Who did the best imitation in the bit? Have you already posted the clip on Facebook or is it too much of “a jambalaya for Farmville updates and vampire requests” for you to bother? This was better than half of that episode. Where was Anna though?
Gee, they aren’t very political on this show are they?
Sure, watch it, but not if you live in Canada.
I feel your pain. What did we Canadians ever do to miss out on online videos… maybe they’ll tax us for watching them, just like entering the country now.
Billsus Haderchrist to save the day. Although, loving Pedrad’s Arianna Huffington
Way better than the episode. And definately had the right amount of satire and tribute
Why do they always seem to cut the best sketches? The Mozart one, Netflix, and now this?
Funny, but the crowd wasn’t really into this. The Netflix skits have been pretty good but got off both times.
Meh
No wonder they cut it. Not a laugh in the whole sketch.
I miss the Bill Hader skits of him being Vinny Vedecci, the Italian talk Show host. one of his best character skits ever IMO.
yeah, I actually thought they were going to do that sketch for Anna Faris’ episode, and then it turned it out to be the Manuel Ortiz show.
The skit was not funny. The impersonation of Arrianna was humorous
