Glee star Harry Shum Jr., who plays Mike Chang on the Fox hit, took to his blog to mourn the loss of Apple founder Steve Jobs and reveal his interesting connection to the Apple genius: Shum Jr. was a silhouetted dancer in one of the first iPod commercials. Writes the actor, “I was asked to do a test commercial shoot for an Apple product which didn’t mean much to me at the time. Some music player that holds all your songs. Sounded cool to me and I never gave up an opportunity to work especially with the possibility of it turning into a national commercial. Coolest job I did in that time. Just for the fact that I was chosen for my dancing and just my dancing alone. It was a silhouette of me so looks and race didn’t play into it unlike most of the jobs I would audition for.”
The actor/dancer finally got a chance to meet Jobs at the 2009 Oscars. “As I approached him, I interrupted a conversation he was having with Disney’s Bob Iger,” writes Shum Jr. “I told him about how I did the iPod ads and have always wanted to meet him. I was speaking at 100 mphs and not sure if I was making coherent sentences. He just smiled at me and said, ‘That’s great! Thank you for all your hard work you put into it. Those were great ads.’”
“He has influenced the world more than anyone could have ever imagined. An innovator, a pioneer and a genius who only come around once in a lifetime. This is a very sad day but I will use it to remember Steve by all of the amazing things that he has brought into this world.”

Yet another desperate attempt by EW to have a Glee-esque article.
Give us a break!
I can’t believe you and all the other Glee-haters spend minutes of your day commenting on these articles. Obviously EW is not going to stop.. they make news, they probably get the most hits and comments, they know what they’re doing. It’s THEIR website, get a life.
Thanks for your defending me and EW!
Hey, I worked in the gun shop that sold Kurt Cobain shotgun shells.
I just thought you should know.
I don’t consider myself a Glee-hater…I still watch it. And I clicked and read this article cuz I was hoping there was an actual personal relationship somewhere in there….but there wasn’t. You’re the one commenting on a comment telling someone to get a life. Mkay.
Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life.
Hey, Michael Jackson farted in the stall next to me the day before he died.
I just thought you should know.BTW,I wanna share a good news to you.My best friend ,she just has announced her wedding with a millionaire man who is a businessman!they met via Millionaireloving.C óM ..it is the largest and best club for rich people and their admirers to chat online. …You do not have to be rich or famous. ,but you can meet one , It’s worthy a try,Maybe you wanna check it out or tell your friends!
…has anyone snapped up the movie rights yet?
I agree n this dweeb of an supposed actor is an attention wh@re!
Yeah, pretty desperate there.
What’s a whare
*sigh* it’s not like he wrote it cause he wanted it to get published, it’s just a blog post that EW used for the article he didn’t write it for them. If you want to blame someone blame EW.
Sigh. Who cares what u think!
You’re the one calling people out on an entertainment site. You seem pretty desperate for attention yourself.
Eyes is! Spoon feed me attention momma!
iDied
Steve Jobs is awesome but just not the greatest inventor like everybody thinks! Everyone is making Jobs seem like some kind of God!
Some would say the same about Ryan Murphy….
Just because your Zune looked like a brick of sh!t doesn’t mean you should your frustrations out on Harry Shum.
If you don’t want to read “yet another” Glee article, why did you actually hit the link to it? Did someone hold a gun to your head and force you to read it?
sounds more like a desperate attempt of an actor to steal some limelight
Sorry BUT not newsworthy. Many other celebrities had much closer bonds with him…
Please hire a proper editor for you website that greenlights what is posted. This is probably one of the most ridiculous and desperate Glee articles you’ve ever posted.
“As I approached him, I interrupted a conversation he was having with Disney’s Bob Iger,”
Steve Jobs later said to Bob Iger, “What a douche for interrupting us with that nonsense!”
I wish a link to the ad was included.. how cool.
Thanks for continuing to shove Glee and this ‘actor’ down our throats.
So what I’m getting you are fine with “someone” else eulogizing Steve Jobs -just not someone from Glee, right? Harry DOES have a connection to Steve -through the innovative ad campaigns which drew attention to Apple products. This article was meant for something else BESIDES what you and others are taking from it. And that was to honor Steve Jobs. Put your hate aside and deal with it!!!
Hey, Michael Jackson farted in the stall next to me the day before he died.
I just thought you should know.
on a side note, dang, harry shum jr. looks mighty fine in suspenders!
Umm…no.
I know a janitor at Yale that picked up a used paper towel that Steve Jobs missed the trashcan with.
What a brush with greatness.
… has anyone bought the movie rights yet?
Maybe Leno, Ellen, Letterman, and 60 Minutes should have this guy on to recount his story.
Facinating.
… I would be glued to the tube as he gripped the nation with this, the most fascinating of tales. I bet suspender sales would go through the roof. Especially EW-branded ones.
Hey everybody.
I once tried out to be one of Amy Winehouse’s back up dancers.
I just thought you should know.
I can’t believe these hater comments. A great man died and most of you are slamming an actor from Glee. I seriously doubt Harry Shum Jr. was wanting publicity. He was just reminiscing about his connection to Steve Jobs. His memory of him was touching. The rest of you get a grip.
I believe EW is at fault for making such a desperate attempt to promote Glee in one of their wormy ways rather than Harry Shum, Jr. to get the blame. It would’ve been different had his agent or PR person sent this info to EW.
They could’ve included this in an article about other celebrities discussing memories of Steve Jobs rather than make it Glee-centric.
You have to admit that’s pretty ridiculous for them to do.
Yeah, I’d have to disagree, considering that there are 2 pages of posts about this supposedly insignficant schmuck. For not caring, there are a lot of posts indicating otherwise.
The title says Harry Shum remembers Steve Jobs.. not other celebs. Why’d you click on the link??
@@Michael…I never said that I didn’t care.
I actually thought that it was interesting that Harry was one of the dancers from that ad campaign. If you didn’t or if you hate Glee or if you are just a jerk, keep it to yourself. Nobody made you read this article.
I’m just a jerk and I hate Glee so there.
:p
So, this discourse has reached the intelligence level of “so there”
I am done. So there.
He wasn’t seeking attention at all. He’s writing in his blog…blogs are supposed to feature content that is current….he was merely writing about his personal connection with an icon that passed away.
Thank you. You sound like a nice person.
Nyuck! Nycuk!
Why you!
Exactly!!!
I usually defend EW with their non-stop Glee coverage but even I had to laugh at this attempt to make Steve Jobs death about Glee. Just be glad Twilight isn’t coming out soon. We’d get a story about Kristen Stewart’s first iPod.
Breaking Dawn comes out in less than two months…I’m sure that story is on its way.
an editor is somewhere figuring out how to write a story on Kristen Stewart’s iPod, which naturally contains not only the “Glee” soundtrack of Lady Gaga songs, but also the audiobook of “Kardashian Konfidential.”
Who?
