With both Netflix and Showtime currently in talks to pick up the show and make this happen and Hurwitz promising that the limited-run series will catch fans up on everything that’s been going on with the Bluth clan since Arrested Development ended five years ago (in short, “They f— everything up”), could this be even more exciting than the prospect of a movie? After all, the wait for the flick has been, as Bateman put it last month, “frustrating,” so this could alleviate all of the anticipation and high expectations being placed solely on the movie. Plus, it’s just more Arrested Development! Time to do an excited chicken dance!
Then again, some fans might argue that a short-run series and movie don’t really need to happen in the first place. The lone three seasons of the cult comedy were near-perfect as is; why try and change that? Has the cast made a huge mistake? I’m personally one of the Arrested fans (there are literally dozens of us) who is eagerly looking forward to both the short-run series (especially Hurwitz’s idea to have “almost one character per episode, where, like, the first episode will just be Buster”) and the movie. My love and appreciation for the supremely bizarre series has only grown over the past few years (season 2 ages like a fine wine) and I have faith that both Hurwitz and the cast know how much this means to fans. They can’t possibly let us down, right? Right?! Let’s break out the juice and celebrate. This is going to be off the hook!
In the meantime, while we wait, check out more photos below of the Arrested Development cast at the New Yorker festival. (Above, right.) It seems everyone was there, except actress Mae Whitman, a.k.a. Bland Ann. Or maybe she was and nobody noticed.
How do you feel about the Arrested Development news, PopWatchers? Is it the best news ever or the best news EVER? Or is that like comparing apples and some fruit nobody’s ever heard of? Share in the comments section below! And, as if you weren’t pumped enough, blue yourself over this footage below of the cast doing the chicken dance.

Looking fwd to it, but im still not sure any1 will watch this time around. The series always had low ratings…
Who cares? This is for the true fans anyway.
Aww, EW! Why was my Franklin the puppet comment deleted? RACISM! Poor Franklin.
Hmmm, strange. It just magically reappeared. Gob and his illusions…
The show has been off the air forever and nobody watched it. It’s hardly up there in DVD sales. Who really thinks (besides EW), that this is worthy of a follow up???
You are an idiot.
Ummm….anyone who watched the show and rightfully acknowledges it as the greatest sitcom of all time.
Everyone who’s ever watched the show.
And where did you get your DVD sales stats? It’s one of the most popular titles ever.
Anybody who has ever watched the show. Your a dumbass
why are you here?
shut up
I didn’t discover the show until it had been off the air for years and I still love it. I know a lot of people who came to the show after its cancellation and are huge fans.
You left out the most obvious option for an answer: BEST NEWS EVERRRRRRRRRR!
It’s kind of amazing how as he ages, Michael Cera gets more and more creepy-looking. I think he is evolving into some sort of scary bird-human hybrid. I’ve grown tired of hearing about the movie and waiting for it, so while part of me is kind of excited, most of me is just kind of indifferent to the news.
Thank you!! I’m glad I’m not the only one who thinks he looks like a bird.
Here he looks like Taylor Swift.
Never watched this series. Straight to DVD.
I do not think “Straight to DVD” means what you think it means.
Inconcievable!
I’ll believe it when I see it. Still, I would definitely watch any and all things “Arrested Development”. So what if it’s not as good as the 3 seasons of the show? There is always the 3 seasons of the show to go watch. Season 2 has extremely high re-watch value.
I think I just blue myself.
There has to be a better way to say that.
Away. You forgot to say ‘away’.
Great news. Hoping to see more Segway scenes and magic tricks.♠
illusions, j. davis…illusions
Liz, you’re awesome
Very, very excited. Watched every episode when it aired. I just hope it doesn’t turn into a huge tiny mistake.
I feel like Hurwitz has been “halfway through” the Arrested Development script for about three years.
As a super fan of Arrested Development, I have to be excited for this, but we all know its going to be a terrible let down, right? There’s just no way it can recapture the glory of its former self. Especially with 5 years of hype behind it.
Only if you go into it with a negative attitude.
BEST NEWS EVER! We should all have a frozen banana in celebration!
I am excited for this, but I’m a little too cynical. Once I hear the show/movie is actually IN production, then I’ll get excited. A mini-series leading into a movie is a great idea, though.
LOVE this show, but please leave well enough alone. It ended so perfectly, anything else will only taint it.
Taint.
Get Bob Loblaw on the phone!
Cautiously optimistic. I think it’s funny that this project only gained momentum after Michael Cera’s career cooled off. Had Scott Pilgrim been a hit, I doubt they would have been able to afford him.
