'SNL': See 'Netflix Apology' sketch cut for time

Not wanting to keep hugely talented host Melissa McCarthy offscreen for too long, the Saturday Night Live producers nixed a solidly funny sketch about Netflix’s recent run of head-scratching developments from last night’s show. The sketch starts off funny-because-it’s-true as goateed Netflix CEO Reed Hastings (played by Jason Sudeikis) and DVD operations head Andy Rendich (Fred Armisen) explain the new rate hikes and the creation of unfortunately titled DVD-mailing spin-off Qwikster. Then the humor quickly escalates as the name and service changes become more and more absurd. See the clip, posted on NBC’s website after the show:

Did SNL nail your feelings on the Netflix/Qwikster changes? Which of the ridiculous scenarios from the sketch wouldn’t surprise you at this point?

Not funny. All it did was remind me why I cancelled my subscription.

      I loved it. Ultra funny

      • Lenny

That might have been the only sketch I actually liked. I wonder why they cut it?

      • Yeah…

I actually just subscribed to the streaming service and love it . Everyone knows that DVD rentals will be dead within a decade or so—so why not go ahead and make that a secondary concern?

      • Jason C.

DVD rentals will be dead only if one service can get everything streamed. But as long as I have to rely on a DVD service for most of what I want it won’t be dead to me…

I thought it was funny even though it reminded me EXACTLY why I cancelled my subscription. Of course it won’t be funny when a year from now Redbox & Hulu rule the business and the four thousand customers still on Netflix reminisce about the good old days.

      • Ana

Amazon is more likely to take over than Redbox & Hulu.

    • Cygnus

I’m pretty sure we’ll see this on the show next week, or inserted into a future ep.

    • Monica

I stopped using Netflix and switched to Redbox. I also use “TV Devo” for streaming. If you want streaming it’s a better choice than Netflix.

The Oatmeal explained this change pretty well.

  • Rob

that was pretty funny- wonder why they didn’t save it for another episode?

Hey, EW. Please put a link for any non-US viewers. Since you charge Canadian subscribers more than US subscribers, it’d be a nice touch.

  • Angela

    I love Powder.

    • o

I love Ruthless People, funnier then anything on SNL!

  • kyle

    that wasnt bad

  • Miss

I saw this online and didn’t realize it had been cut. I laughed more at this skit than any other.

    • Squishmar

Some of their funniest sketches are often cut. I guess it has to do with the length or just Lorne Michaels’ whims.

      • Courtney

Probably has something to do with why the “Best of” videos never actually have the best skits…

  • eric

i cant watch this cuz i live in piece of sh*t canada

    • Lenny

      you aren’t missing much eh

  • Viewer

Maybe if SNL knew when to end a sketch they’d have time to air one that might be funny.

  • StemCell Fajita

Proof that Andy Sandberg has too much power at SNL. Someone should have told him his Digital Short was lame and cut it.

  • Claire

Hilarious. I was crying with laughter (and yes, I’m a Netflix subscriber… though not for much longer).

  • Kyle Brovlofski

That was hysterical, and if not for Sudekis and Armisten, I’d honestly believe these were real Netflix ads, the way things are going!

  • Mindy

Spot on! This should have made the show. This is almost exactly what I envision coming from Netflix in its next group of “exciting changes”.

  • Merry Bear

Should have left that in; thought it was funnier than anything else on the show that night.

  • RUCookie

They should not have cut this…. too funny!!!
