Janice Dickinson 2.0? Kelly Cutrone joins 'Top Model' judging panel

Two knowledgeable judges stood before Tyra Banks, but she had only one contract in her hand. The person moving on in hopes of judging America’s Next Top Model will be… Kelly Cutrone. André Leon Talley, you must pack your capes and leave the panel immediately. At least that’s how I imagine the news being handed down yesterday at Bankable Productions… Today’s reports that Banks has decided to oust the Vogue Contributing Editor in favor of PR maven and reality headliner Cutrone poses a question: Is Banks hoping to usher in a Top Model renaissance? And will Cutrone be the woman to help her do it?

Since Janice Dickinson’s departure from the show in 2005, Banks has experimented with several former models (Twiggy, Paulina Porizkova), invited a rotating panel of questionable guest judges (Lauren Conrad, Nicki Minaj, Ashlee Simpson), and most recently added Talley. But none of these combinations have reproduced the magic of ANTM‘s glory years featuring Dickinson, Nigel Barker (currently on the panel), and stylist Nolé Marin. If Banks is hoping to capture the attitude Dickinson brought without the drama, Cutrone seems like a strong contender. Below, we present five reasons why Cutrone could bring about a ninth-inning comeback.

1. She can break a girl down. As she proved when infamously interviewing Stephanie Pratt on The Hills, you do not want to be on the other side of a table from Kelly Cutrone. Bad news for Models, but good news for viewers!

2. Despite her cutting demeanor, she has a self-professed mothering streak, prefers to focus on constructive criticism, and is unlikely to call stick-thin contestants fat as Dickinson often did.

3. Cutrone lives by an all-black dress code, so her clothes won’t be as distracting as former judge (and current runway coach) J. Alexander’s ever-expanding series of hats, bows, etc.

4. As a legitimate fashion publicist with 25 years of experience under her belt, Cutrone is familiar with running fashion shows, which serve as the climax of each Top Model cycle. She will certainly have excellent input and connections to spice up the runway events, which have become rather uneventful in recent years. (Then again, if she wants to bring back the zombie brides of cycle 7, no one’s stopping her.)

5. Cutrone admits, “I am a huge fan of America’s Next Top Model and have watched the show for years.” She added that she hopes to “bring a different perspective to the show.” If that perspective could have saved viewers from Top Model‘s most recent photo shoot involving inappropriate poses with chili-slathered hot dogs, then perhaps Cutrone should have signed on even earlier.

So what do you think, PopWatchers? Did you watch Cutrone on The Hills and/or Kell on Earth? Do you like the change, or will you miss your weekly injection of dreckitude and man capes? Do you think Cutrone will make a nice fit on the panel, or do you think it’s only a matter of time before she starts throwing side-eyes at Banks?

      • Marygold

Now if they would get rid if Tyra, maybe I’d start watching again.

      • Yeah…

Andre Leon F@ckwad will NEVER be forgiven for screwing up J-Hud’s Oscars outfit with that stupid aluminum foil THING he made her wear.

  • LOL

    America loves crap.

    • JackieB

Aw, man. I had resigned myself to never watch this show b/c of my Tyra hatred and the vapid teenagers they put on the show… but this news makes me want to watch it. I love Kelly Cutrone!

  • AK

So I guess the “high fashion” era of ANTM is officially over?

    • SaraS

What does that mean? The judges have nothing to do with the show being “high fashion”.. besides, even if they did, read the article – Kelly’s more involved with runways than several previous judges.
And guess what, the show has never really been high fashion anyway. What are any of the winners doing? Covergirl magazine spreads for about 6 months, that’s what.

      • Jay Dub

A lot of the girls are working but fashion is all over the place so, if you’re not a big fashionista/fashion follower, you may not know about them. Most models aren’t big names anyway so, the ones on ANTM are just keeping in step with the industry.

My response when I first read this was to jump up and down squealing. I am a HUGE Kelly Cutrone fangirl and this is like Christmas.

    • ty

      me too!

  • Aunt Sassy

I love me some Kelly Cutrone, but I am not sure this is a match made in heaven. Sorry, but Kelly is such a strong force and I don’t think having her on the sidelines like that is the best use of her talents. But then again, this show hasn’t been relevant since, well, EVER, so I guess I should just be happy I get to see Kelly each week during the cycle – right?

  • Dana

The only way to make the show better is to get rid of Tyra.

  • Elbyem

I missed Miss Jay when he left, and will miss ALT, and his caftans and hats. That being said, the panel definitely needs a jolt. Hope Alexandria lasts, so she and Kelly can go head to head.

    • Aura Lee

That would be the only reason I would want Alexandria to stick around. That girl is straight up psychopath and she is looking older and older. She’s definitely the oldest looking of the bunch.

      • Mellissa

Unless Alexandria lasts until Cycle 18, she and Kelly will have nothing to do with each other. The ANTM All-Star winner has been named. The episodes just haven’t aired yet.

  • Matt

So when does she start? This season? Next season? I’m no ALT fan, so hopefully this’ll be an improvement on that mess, but really Tyra(nt) should bring Miss J and Paulina back to the judging panel.

  • 24yanks

I’m looking forward to that first moment when Kelly rolls her eyes at whatever crazy thing Tyra is doing/saying. It’s going to be great. No way will Kelly back down from an argument with Tyra.

  • lisa g. makes ignorant comments

You’ve never even watched that show have you?

  • JP

Personally, I don’t care who else is on the panel if only they would bring back J. Alexander. She kept me laughing during every panel she was on with her remarks and observations about the girls. Most recently, I recall something along the lines of “She… looks… crazy.”

  • Dominic

I like the judges to be constructive, firm and fair. If she can do that and bring some fresh blood it could work. Won’t miss Leon. Too often his critiques were thoughtless and vapid.

  • gigi

The shark was jumped somewhere with this show. It really should consider ending…or do a season with male models.

  • Tom

The magic with Janice and Nole was his damn little dog, that was the heart of the show, of all the bitches they had on that show, the dog was the one I tuned in to see.
