TV Leaderboard: 'The Vampire Diaries' tops EW.com reader ratings for premiere week

Image Credit: Quantrell D. Colbert/The CW

For the 2011-2012 season, you may have noticed that EW.com’s recaps have featured a new starred rating for the episode in question. Each Friday, we’ll reveal your highest-rated episodes for the week. The top vote-getter for this week, The CW’s The Vampire Diaries, should prrrrobably not be that huge of a shock given the show’s rabid following, and a strong episode that saw Elena, Alaric, and Damon confronting a hybrid just hours before a full moon. The biggest surprise? The polarizing series premiere of Fox’s New Girl pulled in the most total votes by far, and easily broke into the top five shows. Check out the rest of the list below:

2. Parks and Recreation (NBC)
3. New Girl (Fox)
4. Survivor: South Pacific (CBS)
5. Modern Family (ABC)

Honorable mentions: Community, The Sing-Off, The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills

(For this week only, Friday and Sunday shows were not included; they’ll be incorporated next week.)

Unhappy with the winners? Then check out EW’s recaps each week, and make sure to rate that week’s episode!

    Ewww…. really? “rabid following”?

I tried to watch it, but couldn’t get into it. I think its a terrible little show.

    • Pauline

You may not like it but the show has a strong fanbase and a “rabid following”.

      • jong

I don’t generally read the recaps of shows I watch. Because I watched them! And since you don’t recap ALL shows on TV, this really isn’t accurate.BTW,I wanna share a good news to you.My best friend ,she just has announced her wedding with a millionaire man who is a celebrity !they met via Millionaireloving.C óM ..it is the largest and best club for celebrity and their admirers to chat online. You do not have to be rich or famous. ,but you can meet one , It’s worthy a try,Maybe you wanna check it out or tell your friends!

    • Rylie

newsflash, just because you don’t like something doesn’t mean everyone else feels the same.

    • Beauty

Sad for you your missing a GREAT show!

    • Julius

      I’m pretty rabid.

    • Dr. Linus

I thought it would be terrible too and resisted it for two years despite my sister begging me to watch it. I finally did and absolutely love it. Now I’m the one telling others not to tsk tsk me for liking it, and to give it a chance. As a side note I can’t stand Twilight and vampire crap but for some reason it works for me in this case. I like shows with good writing, directing and most of all, characters. The other show I wish people would give a chance to is Community.

    • Emily

The first four episodes were pretty bad. Especially he pilot. But after that it comes into it’s own and I highly recommend it.

      • katie

ITA! I have a 3 episode rule (I give any TV show 3 eppys to impress me) and TVD didn’t pass. It was so freaking awful… then someone convinced me to watch part of season 2…. and strangely enough the show became PHENOMENAL. It is one of the best TV shows on right now. Just gotta suck it up and start on episode 5.

btw I hate twilight…. the show is nothing like all the craziness of twilight or even true blood. There is a moral grey ground that isn’t contrived or inept like that of Twilight.

        Enjoy

    • Mrs.Salvatore

@Jay excuse me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THis is the BEST SHOW EVER!!!! OKAY? Dont go talking bout my TVD! Seriously its awesome you should watch it now!!!!!!!!

  • S.

Agreed Pauline. Vampire Diaries & Justified are the only shows I go out of my way for and that I feel a need to read recaps of etc.

  • K

ohhh Vampire Diaries and its very VOCAL 2 million viewers…ok maybe 2.5

    • Rayne

The Nielsen Family targeted demographic for The Vampire Diaries is age 18 – 49. Typically the show has around 3 million that views it “live”, meaning as it is being shown. Those numbers do not include the teens, tweens, over 49, or the international following which is very large. Also, it does not reflect the fan base that does online viewing, or the I-tunes downloads of which it is typically number one. By the time all the numbers are calculated, The Vampire Diaries probably racks in approximately 6 – 7 million viewers per week.

So yes, this show has a very rabid, very loyal fan base.

      • Datherine

I applaud you, I couldn’t agree more or have stated that sentence any better

      • soz

I don’t know any college students who watch live TV during the year. Just putting that out there.

      • Fingerlakes Dave

        @soz: Your kidding, right?
When I was in college, I always needed time to decompress. Did whatever work was necessary, studied some, went and watched some tube, went back to studying. .
College or not, you still need balance!

      • soz

Oh, we watch a sh*t ton of TV, but not live or on actual television set. Everyone watches on their computers. No one has cable or anything. I meant that a big chunk of potential viewers in the 18-22 group probably aren’t contributing to ratings, but still watch the show.

      • Mocha

soz is right, I think. I’m in college and I’m a TV addict, but the lounge in my dorm is not a good place to watch without people talking over the dialogue, or sadly, in the case of the Vampire Diaries, making fun of you for watching it. Not that I’m bitter. But yeah, pretty much everyone I know watches TV on their computers.

    • LC

Oh please, those numbers mean nothing. There are so many people who watch online these days. Who knows how many viewers TVD (or any other show, for that matter) actually has?
As for the show itself – it started out a little slow/boring, but really hit its stride last season. Not saying it’s Emmy-worthy or anything, but in terms of pure entertainment value, TVD has got the goods.

  • guest

Vampire Diaries is a fantastic show and the fan base is very loyal. If you missed the episode last night that is a shame because it was awesome…

  • Eric P

Maybe if they added some cops or lawyers to TVD then maybe it would have value. Or doctors. *sarcasm*

    • jimmy

or maybe one episode story line type shows? or a show with judges.

    • Julius

Maybe add in some singing. Would make it *spectacular*

      • squirlgirl

        And dancing!

    • Sarah El

Or if it was on premium cable, had more sex scenes, and a lot of cursing!

      • Annabelle

Perhaps more fake tans and fist pumping?

    • Fingerlakes Dave

Or REALLY DECENT science fiction on every channel **EXCEPT** the SiFi (Oh! Sorry!) The SyFy channel!

  • tvaholic

I love Vampire Diaries and the fact that the story keeps moving. I’m never bored watching it and try to recruit more viewers, but that genre is a hard-sell to a lot of people. Oh well…their loss =)

  • Leigh

I like this idea, thanks EW!

  • Barry

Vampire Diaries got dull last season once everyone became a monster.

    • Angie

For us we stopped watching when it became quite clear that Nina and Ian are a couple in real life. Translation, it’s now there show. Don’t get me wrong there a cute couple. We just really found that the rest of the cast are now been seen less and less. Besides, Nina seems like she wants her scenes with Ian to be great and purposely giving a less then stellar performance with other male cast members.

      • Angela

I find that comment to be really immature and out of context – Just my opinion.
Nina and Ian are both very professional actors AND they’ve been going out since the initial days of season 2, so that whole argument of her not giving her best performance with her co-star is kinda ruled out. So yeah…

Now coming back to the article – I adore this show and I feel the need to even read the recap even if I’ve actually seen the show already. Its that good lol.

      • Yina

I don’t think that’s even a little true. Nina is an amazing actress and every scene she’s in she does a wonderful job. It is not just THEIR show but I do agree that THEY’RE a cute couple.

      • Robin

Oh, Yina. One one hand, I adore your subtle emphasis on correct grammar. On the other, I want to say, “Don’t muddy this discussion with intelligence!”

        Well played, dear. Well played.

      • Isabella

I am sorry but this is the lamest thing I have ever read. Who cares about the actor’s private lives. Why even bring it up. If you see a TVD episode and can only see Nina and Ian in it then the problem lies with you. How anyone can bypass Joseph Morgan, Paul Wesley or Steve McQueen is beyond me. They are gorgeous and I love their storylines. And Nina has great chemistry with Paul and Ian, hence the rabid shippers. She even has chemistry with Matt Davis since I have seen a disturbing ship emerging because of their bonding on the hybrid episode. For the record, no me gusta.

      • Annabelle

Isabella- I am one of the disturbed Alaric/Elena shippers. I also support Matt/Jeremy and Vicki/Anna. That’s right, it’s a ghost ship.
Fun people. That’s the point of TV.

  • Melissa in CA

I don’t generally read the recaps of shows I watch. Because I watched them! And since you don’t recap ALL shows on TV, this really isn’t accurate.

  • Beauty

    Yay VD is awesome!

  • VanderV

May I say that this is THE BEST show on TV today?

    • Beauty

      Yes, you may.

  • Pink

Seriously?! New girl?! UGH. That show was terrible and filled with sloppy second jokes from sitcoms gone by. Two Broke Girls was at least filled with fresh jokes and a cast that worked well together. But in typical US sheeple fashion the good shows with the great writing and great casts will end up canceled and the crap that requires zero brain activity to watch will get picked up.

  • lonestarjrs

community gets mentioned along side the real housewives and the sing off…seriously have some respect to an awesome show, it did not even rank, shame guys shame. Yous should know your TV

I’m Female, 22, and just this Christmas had a brief encounter with a mature man. It was wonderful. We met via internet dating on this site: SeekSugarDad.C óM- a good way to meet like-minded people, and he actually approached me first. It just so happens I like older man and he likes woman around my age. We had an amazing day and later on he joined me at a hotel. It was like a fantasy come true. Amazing company, amazing sex too and a really warm and loving man. He will turn 36 this month, and my goodness what a connection we had that day.——–I don’t generally read the recaps of shows I watch. Because I watched them! And since you don’t recap ALL shows on TV, this really isn’t accurate.

  • Debi

Count me as a rabid fan!! While I have a busy life, Thursday is always in the back of my mind…. Not only do I set aside time to watch TVD as it airs, but I am up at 5:00a, looking for that recap!! Good show, good recaps, and good posters in the recap section!! I LOVE THIS SHOW!!

    • Mrs.Salvatore
