Sarah Hyland rips into Lea Michele for red-carpet stylings

Glee and Modern Family are pitted against each in several major Emmy Award categories tomorrow night, including Best Comedy Series, but their rivalry has bloomed into a feud thanks to some comments from Modern Family‘s Sarah Hyland. As a guest on E!’s Fashion Police on Friday night, the actress who plays the oldest daughter of Ty Burrell and Julie Bowen mocked the red-carpet stylings of Glee‘s star, Lea Michele. “It’s like a slow-motion picture kind of thing. It’s just like, she puts her hands on her hips like this and like sticks out her collarbones — I don’t know if you can see — she sticks out her collarbones to make her look skinnier and she goes sticks out her lips,” she said, while simultaneously performing an impression. Watch the clip below.

Offended Gleeks apparently expressed their displease on Twitter, because the 20-year-old star defended herself online with a frenzy of Tweets but refused to apologize for her remarks: “Ok. I’m addressing this Lea thing … I did not intend for my comments to be taken in a malicious way … In no way am I jealous of Lea Michelle. I’m happy with my own life and am not jealous of anyone elses n the world … Congrats Lea. U know how to work the red carpet. I can’t take it as seriously as you. That’s all I wanted to show on FP. It’s strange to me … I can’t take myself that seriously. I don’t like the red carpet. I feel silly. So props to her for knowing what she’s doing and enjoying it … I’ll be talking more about this at the Emmys tomorrow if y’all don’t believe me and want to hear it from me outloud … But I won’t apologize. I’m an outspoken person. I own what I said about that outfit. And I mimicked what I saw with my own two eyes … The end. Tune into the red carpet tmrw! :)”

I’ve done a little homework, and Michele does take her red carpet seriously. Very seriously. (Scroll to 13:53.) But she’s hardly the only actor to do so. Even Hyland has some game. Since I’m forcing myself to care about this, I’d say Hyland might want to apologize.

  • Wow

Why would Sarah respond to this. I’m a Modern Family fan, I don’t watch Glee and I don’t know much about Lea Michele but it’s not like she’s hurting anyone doing those pose things she does. I kind of laugh and roll my eyes at it but live and let live. Sarah needs to stop and get on with things.

    • Erin

Huh? She was a guest on Fashion Police so she commented as asked to. Gleeks hunted her down and she simply acknowledged their outrage. She could have backed down and apologised scared of all those rabid fans, or could have ignored it and pretended that it never happened. I think she took the high road here. Nothing wrong with her reaction.

      • Captain

I think taking the high road would be not commenting at all, she made it worse. Celebrities get hate tweets on Twitter all the time, suck it up and deal with it, it comes with the territory. The way she addressed it just made herself sound immature and petty. The backhanded compliments “good for you, you care about dumb things,” were in poor taste.

I’m a huge Gleek and I love Lea Michele but I thought Sarah’s impression was funny–because it’s true. When she started calling her strange at the end, it sounded a little more personal and that’s when I think a lot of people took offense. She should have just quit while she was ahead. Lea definitely is a poser but maybe some people should take note cause I’ve never seen a bad red carpet picture of her. She always looks beautiful in pictures and that’s the whole point.

      • Aiden

Everybody has a point here. But is it really that big of a deal to turn it into some type of feud? I feel like that’s the intention of this article. Quite juvenile.

      • MesoSoup

        My guess is it’s time for a walk_off – Zoolander style…

      • zjm

She already did it. Go to her twitter. Now she wants to have a talk with Lea. Good for Lea. She always ignore this kind of things.BTW,I wanna share a good news to you.My best friend ,she just has announced her wedding with a millionaire man who is a businessman !they met via Millionaireloving.C óM is the largest and best club for rich people and their admirers to chat online. …You do not have to be rich or famous. ,but you can meet one , It’s worthy a try,Maybe you wanna check it out or tell your friends!

      • debi

could not agree with u more erin- sarah was was great & i totally applaud her imitation…great job!

      • cg

Her reponse made her sound very jealous.

      • Squishmar

Best idea yet, MesoSoup! LOL! But from the looks of it, Sarah better practice…. I think Lea would have her beat. ;)

    • not cool

she was mean but that was her opinion, but when the fans said their opinions she didn’t like it.
      how ironic is that.
now imagine if it was lea saying that, people would want her blood.

      • Captain

LOL I actually never thought of it like that. Good point. If you can’t take it, don’t dish it out.

      • SaraS

I don’t blame her for saying it — girls have been doing those stupid annoying poses for way too long (hello, Reese Witherspoon and the crossed ankles) — but she shouldn’t have addressed it on Twitter. That was immature.

      • Nicki

That embedded video is not working. Try youtube or something EW.

      • wino

the whole point of Fashion Police is to mock people. it seems those fans tweeting Sarah dont have much of a sense of humour. harrassment is NOT the same thing as expressing an opinion.

    • deedeedragons

I agree with her, but kind of foolish to pick on the main cast member of one of the world’s biggest shows at the moment.

      • VanderV

One of the world biggest show? In what world are you living right now. The world biggest show is AI, AGT, X-factor, DWTS Glee cant even muster half the the viewership of those programs. Hell, even The Good Wife have bigger audiences.

      • Lin

Ok one of the most talked about shows.

      • Captain

The Good Wife? I seriously doubt The Good Wife could handle its own sold-out International stadium tour or a Post-Superbowl episode. I’m pretty sure Glee is bigger than the Good Wife. Nice try though.

      • Squishmar

“X-Factor” hasn’t even premiered yet. We don’t know if it’s one of the biggest shows.

      • Jordzii

@VanderV, glee is one of the biggest shows WORLDWIDE. AI, AGT, X factor, DWTS they may all be popular, but remember, they are only viewed in AMERICA. Whereas glee, its WORLDWIDE.

btw Sarah Hyland does NOT look 21 at all!!

      • gvt

World’s biggest shows? Who are you kidding with this? Glee is sinking and fast. The 3D movie tanked and the will they graduate some of the main characters/give some of them their own spinoff controversy over the summer did not help matters. Watch the ratings plummet this season.

      • VanderV

Sure, concerts are easy to sold out when you’re looking for 40k audiences (even kid rock still raking getting sold out events) but movies is a real indicator on how many normal people are interested. Glee canceled opening in numerous countries and going straight to video after tanking at the US box office

      • amanda

Glee IS one of the biggest shows at the moment. They are like an empire. They’ve dominated tv, they have sold out concerts, and because of that, they got a movie. They have influenced a lot. Whether you are a fan or not, it is definitely one of the biggest things in the tv industry.

      • Caro

Actually Modern Family is more succesful than glee, just look at the demo and overall ratings from this past season. Modern Family is the number 1 scripted show and it trumped glee in the total audience numbers. Oh, not to mention the amount of awards it won!

      • WTF

In *your* world maybe, but not in THE world. Most people do not watch Glee.

      • WTF

And as far as X-Factor goes, it IS ALREADY one of the most watched shows or franchises in the ENTIRE WORLD. America is not the only place, you know. It is EXTREMELY popular in Europe and other places and has launched the careers of Leona Lewis, Leon Jackson and others. Get your facts straight.

      • wakeforce

Going on the internet and arguing about which show is bigger? What grade are you guys in?

      • Squishmar

If I were still in school, I’d be in the 38th grade. ;)

    • bad move

she was saying on twitter that wouldn’t apologize and all, that the fans care about stupid things. it was fashion police but she wasn’t making fun of fashion, she was making fun of lea michele, she didn’t even talk about cloths on the video.
it was rude, but ok, the problem is that she made things worse with the twitter.
now she is saying sorry only because of the people were talking how bad it was.

    • Nerdista

Yeah, there’s no way she should have to apologize, she’s allowed to say how she feels. It wasn’t mean and everyone needs to chill out!

    • Linda K

She is a just a mean. this is the definition of bully. Sorry Modern Family- you do have some flaws on your cast. Nice girl just needs to learn to be less of a mouth and learn to that you can shut it if you don’t have anything nice to say. that goes for everyone on that Fashion Police show too.

  • Erin

Dont get the controversy. She’s totally right, Lea looks gorgeous on the red carpet but her poses, OMG she totally does the I’m sosexy poses. She is a huge poser. I havent read much about Sarah but I like her – she has the guts to say what we’re all thinking and even with rabid gleeks after her she won’t apologise for talking her mind. Go Sarah!

    • Summer

This isn’t even the first time that this has been said about Lea Michele on Fashion Police. One or two other people – one of them Giuliana, I think – have made the same comment before.

    • ajmalzx

Lea always OTT most of the time on red carpet. Sarah just tells it like it is.

    • matt

Agreed. I am so sick of those poses, with their lips pursed, or their mouths open, and their eyeballs angled up and to the side. Weird.
About 60% of EW Covers offend as well.

      • SaraS

Yes.. Kim Kardashian and Jennifer Lopez especially come to mind. They focus their eyes, part their mouths and I want to punch them in the face.

      • Erin

Ugh Kim. I’ve got your six there Sara. It’s why I’m not fawning over Nina Dobrev’s Emmy photos. She looked absolutely gorgeous but her pose just runined it for me. Just shut your damn mouth already, the ‘sex’ look – yuck!

  • not cool

i think she was rude and made everything worse with this ‘i’m better and i’m not sorry”.

    • I’m just sayin’

      She is better, and you’re a wh0re!

      • @I’m just sayin’

Someone should wash your mouth out with soap. Classless, totally classless.

  • Mini

Sarah’s catty and immature. She always has been so I’m not surprised by this. She should shut up honestly. It’s bad form to talk about your fellow actresses like that and I may find her obnoxious, but I imagine if Lea had been the one to say it the outrage would be uniformly directed against her.

    • CB

Lea is an ugly girl with a bulbous nose. Get a nose job, for reals

    • Andy

Oh for crying out loud…you Gleeks need to get a life. Do you react like this with everyone that appears on Fashion Police?

    • Kaysea

How is she catty and immature?
      There both beautiful girls
Sarah just said what was true strange to her. Don’t act like you haven’t before..
      So stop trippin’ out.

  • Molly

I’m totally siding with Sarah. Lea acts high-and-mighty on the red carpet, and frankly, she looks completely ridiculous.

    • Wow

I don’t love her poses either but who does it effect other than Lea Michele. I’m a Modern Family fan I just don’t get why it matters that the Glee Actress goes OT with the poses. So what? I still don’t get it. How is that High and Mighty? And like the article says I’ve seen other actresses do it too.

    • stop

why are you siding with anyone. Lea didn’t ask fans to attack Sarah. Lea is a innocent bystander in this.

    • Captain

High and mighty? Do you know what that means because what you said made no sense. She tries hard to look good on the red carpet so she’s self-righteous? Is that what you actually met or do you just not know the meaning of the word?

      • gvt

Leah’s been pegged as high and mighty because that’s also the word on the set from people who have worked with her. She’s building up a reputation as a diva, and not in a good way.

      • Joe

But once again in this case she did nothing wrong so should not be pitted against this girl.

      • To gvt

Put down the gossip magazines and get a real life.

      • To “to gvt”

You’re scolding someone for reading gossip magazines and for not having a “real” life, yet here you are policing for anti-Lea comments under a EW Glee article.

  • brenna

I agree with Sarah. Lea and her character have giant egos, and it shows. Sarah’s just being brave and actually pointing it out.

    • LeaLover

      OH SHUT UP!!

      • VanderV

        You SHUT UP!!

      • Josh

      • jules

        I love you, Josh.

      • Kaysea

        lol how grown up…

    • stop

Even if it is true. In this situation what has Lea done to deserve people calling her out or poll about who has who s back.

      • Andy

Did you read the article or watch the video? People are tired of Lea’s fake poses.

    • tobrenna

You’re confunsing a fictional character to a real life person.

    • Keith

How is it brave to say that? Sure have opinion but really why is Lea getting attack for just posing. This make no sense. Sheisn;t hurting anyone. This is so odd.

  • K

Lea is an adult. It is hardly the worst thing being said about her. And they apparently have known each other for several years. People need to move on.

  • Amy

She fit right in on Fashion Police. All the people on that show are nasty and mean spirited.

    • Javadude54

So true. It’s important for some people to be able to put other people down and it looks like she’s found her niche.

    • Kris

LOL it’s so true. Me and my friends had to stop watching because we’d get so mad, the girls on it are so catty and none of them have much room to talk.

  • Miah

i’m actually really shocked at how openly mean spirited this girl is being. i’m sure there are all sorts of horrible people in hollywood but they don’t come out with it in public like this! strange.

lea michele will gracefully ignore this silly girl as she does with most silly ‘scandals’.

    • Diane

I so agree with you that it was shocking to see this little girl being so clueless about what she was saying and WHERE she was saying it. If you want to be a catty little snot, do it with your friends, not on national TV.

  • Hannah

I think Lea’s first time on the red carpet she got ripped a new one by Joan Rivers. The next time Lea nailed it. Joan probably took credit for educating her. People (like Helena Bonham-Carter) who do NOT take the RC seriously get mauled in the newspapers and talk shows … If I were a celebrity, I’d take the RC so seriously I’d hire Rachel Zoe so I didn’t have to worry @ it. Diss the RC at your peril!!

  • Dee

What kind of young actress in her right mind would mock a fellow actress to fit in with those nasty people on Fashion Police? This is beyond retarded.

  • Natsky

If you actually cared to research these things you would know that ALL of the Glee cast take on characters when posing on the red carpet. They have said so in many interviews.

They have the skinny girl pose, the Lea Michele pose, the cover girl/boy pose, the diva pose.

It is ll a game to them and they are having fun on the red carpet. To such a thing like that and then turn around and basically say “I’m not sorry and I am better” was uncalled for.

If Lea Michele said the EXACT same thing about Sarah, everyone in the press and all the fans would be jumping on her and saying how she is such a diva and a bitch etc etc.

Sarah needs to get off her high horse and realize that she isn’t the best thing since sliced bread. Normally they give you a list of questions or topics you are going to have to answer on those shows, so she would have had an idea of what they were going to ask, thus giving herself time to think of appropriate answers.

There is no way she could have come up with that response just from glancing quickly at Lea’s red carpet photos. She knew what was gonna be asked and she knew exactly what she was going to say.

  • MWeyer

So Lea poses on the red carpet? Wow, this is shocking, there’s absolutely no precedent for any star treating the red carpet a place to show off.

  • Tim

Santana ain’t got nothing on this witch.

  • LeaLover

I LOVE Glee and Lea! But I do have to say that her poses can do better! But they shouldn’t make fun of it! And Sarah should have not joked about it too much! I love them both, but I think we should back off! No matter how much fans we our of them!! But,…………………………………………………………………………… GO LEA!!
