So many shows, so few Emmy slots. You nominated plenty of deserving comedy series that are just as funny as Emmy’s official chosen ones (Modern Family, 30 Rock, Glee, The Office, The Big Bang Theory, Parks and Recreation). Well, I’ll just say it. A lot of these are way funnier than those. We reluctantly narrowed the field to six; watch them below, then flip through all of this year’s EWwy nominees in our photo gallery.
Community
Oh, hey Sawyer. Community‘s genius is undeniable — even to Modern Family creator Steve Levitan who, after the show was shut out by the Emmys, tweeted “You were robbed” to Community creator Dan Harmon.
*
How I Met Your Mother
Season 6 of CBS’ consistent comedy brought a pregnancy, daddy issues, and guest star Kyle MacLachlan. (And fine, Katy Perry, too). The gang’s still got it.
*
Archer
FX’s animated spy series is off-the-wall and intelligent at once. And the voice of Lucille Bluth (Jessica Walter) never hurt anyone.
*
Raising Hope
Frank and funny, Fox’s 2010 no-frills freshman underdog — perhaps the best comedy of the 2010 season — looks strong heading into season 2.
*
Cougar Town
The modern-day Friends has us all wanting to be part of the Cul De Sac Crew and go hide for hours in Ellie’s new truck. “Man, those are some big grapes!”
*
Louie
This show is pitch-perfect. Nearly every scene is hilarious, unexpected, depressing, and oddly uplifting all at once — like the one in “Subway/Pamela” when Louie confesses his love to a platonic friend. Look for last Thursday’s Afghanistan episode to win a real Emmy next year.

Seriously…. Louie?
I am a 35 years old CEO, rich and strong.but still single … now I am
seeking a good woman who can give me real love , so i got a username btsua1 on–M’illionaireloving.C óM— .it is the first and best club for
wealthy people and their admirers. e…you don’t have to be rich ,but you can meet one there ,maybe you wanna check it out or tell your friends !s332
WTF is wrong with you?
Nothing is wrong with them, Louie has got to be the most ridiculous excuse for a comedy that I have ever seen… That’s like calling “Barney an friends” a Thriller…
They all pretty much suck. Just sayin
Maybe if it had a laugh track the mouth-breathers would like it more. Why turn the genre on its ear when you can just add a football to the groin [which was acceptable that *one* time]?
Ouch! Looks like the best comedy was snubbed twice because it’s not even listed as a choice for this article. The best comedy on TV right now is The Middle.
Community! Of course this should win! Hands down most inventive and hilarious show on TV. If the Award’s Show Darling creator says Community is robbed, it only confirms what an amazing show it is.
Definitely “Community”! I can’t believe it was completely snubbed 2 years in a row.
absolutely! Its a crime that a show like Glee (which no matter how you love or loathe it, is mainly a drama) could get a nomination over Community which is the funniest show on tv. I love that the show doesn’t just settle for funny, it goes above and beyond to include layers that make repeat viewing all the more fun. It is fun to spot the little details in the background that might go unnoticed the first time around.
Don’t watch Glee, eh? A drama???
“Glee” has comedic parts, but its best moments are dramatic. Chris Colfer is nominated for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy, but all his storylines were dramatic.
Totally! Community should win hands down!
Definitely Community. However, I am not on Facebook and choose not to be, so I don’t get the chance to vote, even though I visit the EW site often and bring up the hit counts here. Of course that doesn’t matter to the advertisers who would rather you hit those on Facebook so that they can get every scrap of info on you. So here I was thinking you guys had learned from all the complaints and were giving us the chance to vote on this site. Should have know better. Screw you, EW and Facebook.
Of course Community should win. It was the funniest and freshest show on television. The creators love tv as much as Tarantino loves film… EW is so lame for making this a Facebook only event.
Community FTW!
Cougar Town for the win!
I concur! actually I happen to think the show is better than Modern Family (or was last year). Definitely deserves to be rewarded for making me burst into laughter at my desk just thinking about the episode from the night before. Which I have done. On many thursday mornings!!
I’m torn. It’s either Louie or Raising Hope.
Community, hands down, Danny Pudi not getting a supporting actor nom was a complete travesty, he was the MVP of season 2.
I wanted to like Community. I love Joel McHale. But, over the decades I’ve gone from loving Chevy Chase to loathing him. Not as a person, of course. He’s just not funny anymore.
That’s interesting, b/c I hate his character on Community – he seems like Dr. House, or Dr. Cox on Scrubs, or a character on 30 Rock; basically, the kind of character that’s in vogue with sitcoms right now. I feel, though, that Chevy Chase gets the most out of the character; he plays it a little bit different than anyone else would, and, in my opinion, gets the most out of the character as humanly possible.
The character of Pierce was a little bland at first. He was just clueless and uninteresting. When the writers started making him nasty, Chevy really sunk his teeth into the role and did a great job.
Pierce is actually one of my favorite parts of the show. From him joyfully singing Britta’s a B to him plotting revenge in Dungeons and Dragons he adds a lot of fun to the show and gives it depth.
Chevy was awesome in the “D&D” episode.
The “Blue Dot” episode of Raising Hope was the funniest thing I have seen all year.
Community, Archer, Louie, and Cougar Town are all more deserving than Glee and The Big Bang Theory. Even The Office (as much as I love it) is less worthy this year than at least a couple of these shows.
Why do people keep classifying Louie as a comedy? That show is NOT a comedy. It is depressing as hell. It is great if you go in knowing that, but when I tried watching it as a “comedy” I hated it. Just because a stand-up comedian is the subject/writer doesn’t automatically mean it’s a comedy. He covers a lot of dark and depressing stuff, and just happens to see the humourous aspect of real life on occasion. Seriously. I think the misclassification really must hurt its attraction to audiences who don’t get what they expect.
Agreed.
Jennifer, is IS a comedy. A dark comedy. It may be depressing to you, but if you would open your mind and look a little deeper into each episode, you would see that the humor is presented as well. It’s life. That is what makes it so brilliant.
How I Met Your Mother SHOULD win the Emmy for best comedy! It’s been passed on every time by shows like 30 Rock. It’s a funny show from Neil Patrick Harris’ lead acting to the other actors in the show.
I think it’s corny. The multi-camera, canned-laughter sitcoms don’t have nearly as many jokes, or as complex jokes (I’m not saying everyone on 30 Rock is Einstein, but for some reason single-camera sitcoms can take a little longer with the set-ups, but it seems that these canned-laughter jawns still revolve around “isnt sex funny” jokes), and I don’t think any should be nominated. I think That 70′s Show was the last decent canned-laughter sitcom.
Thank you. HIMYM is not a comedy. The acting is wooden, save NPH. The characters non-existent, and the canned laughter annoying. Friends was genius compared to this tripe.
Raising Hope. I actually laugh out loud watching that one. Others are funny, but don’t necessarily make me laugh out loud.
Philadelphia!
Cougar Town is funny and you forgot the most underrated comedy around, Childrens Hospital. But the biggest snub is Louie. I love 30 Rock and Parks & Rec. but Louie just might be overall the best show on television.
hands down community all the other shows are great and i watch them but i was really shocked not to see any community nomination because in my opinion this season presented masterpieces in tv making, “cooperative Calligraphy” alone deserved an emmy
