In the wake of this week’s horrific riots throughout the UK, many British celebrities have taken to Twitter to empathize with their countrymen, question the violence, or call for action. Kelly Osbourne wrote, “i literally cant leave my lap top busy making sure friends are safe and glued to the news #londonriots.” According to Simon Pegg, “I’ve lived in London for 18 years and never seen anything like it. We’ve done it here, and having lived through the Watts Riots and the Rodney King riots, I’ve had enough rioting here, thanks all the same. Your uncivilized response is “appreciated”.
Ugh, rioting is NEVER an appropriate activity. Never ever. Protesting, now that’s fine. But rioting hurts innocent people. (And for the record, as a slightly-more-liberal-than-not, I think both parties have done QUITE enough to hurt this country, and it’s time to get past partison bullsh*ttery and discuss the ACTUAL problems without acting like children, don’t you?)
I, like many Americans, have always perceived Brits as well mannered and well spoken – a step above, if you will. I could not believe my eyes watching footage of police dogs chasing after people and fires blazing. Reminded me of the United States in the 50s and 60s. So disturbing
