'So You Think You Can Dance': And the finalists are...

This has been a really surprising and refreshing season. Too bad I’m talking about the guest judges rather than the dancers. Last night, Christina Applegate offered up a nice mix of compliments, criticism, and technical know-how. As it were, her diligent research and thoughtful comments were pretty lost on a boring, unremarkable night. Other than Melanie’s solo and Sasha’s contemporary with Kent, the stand-outs were few and few between. Was this the lamest Top 6 ever? Or were you pleased with how the dancers performed? Do you think last night’s snoozefest will be redeemed tonight with some unexpected D4YL performances? Or do you think it’s pretty set in stone who’s going to sail throughout to the finale? Share your thoughts while the show airs, and we’ll be back with the results as soon as they’re delivered. UPDATE: The results are in! Click through to see who made it to the finale.

Well, America, your finalists are Melanie, Marko, Sasha, and Tadd. That means Caitlynn and Ricky were eliminated tonight. In addition, Cat revealed that Mark Kanemura, Robert Roldan, last season’s winner Lauren Froderman, and season 4 winner Joshua Allen will be stepping in as all-stars for next week’s finale. Are you happy about the results? Sad? Surprised? Ready to move on to the inevitable? Was enduring tonight’s episode kind of like watching a train wreck several weeks in the making for Ricky and Caitlynn? What are you looking forward to next week? Who do you want to win? In the meanwhile, check back later tonight for my full recap of tonight’s show.

I think that it is time for Caitlynn and Ricky to go home. The top 4 should be the others. While Caitlynn and Ricky are great dancers they just dont have the caliber and stage presence of the others. Cant wait to see what happen!!

    • kyrjar

Results were pretty obvious. Anyway, totally disagree as I thought that the last two routines were great! The b-way routine was one of my season faves.

      • hbfihd

The result show was the most uneventful hour of television history.

      • Sunny

Contrary to LB’s opinion, this has been the best season ever. I still have my favorites from the past, but the skill level and appeal of these contestants is five times any past seasons. Period.

Who is paying this douche to write? This is the best top 6 ever, one of the best seasons ever, and the guest judges make it all that more amazing. Last night’s performances were terrific. EW stop hiring writers who just hate on shows. Thx! No one likes a snarkfest.

    • Corran

Caitlynn actually did better than Ricky did this week, but yes, this is the right pair who should exit tonight.

    • mg

have you watched the early season ! there is no great dance routine you can say omg i have to watch it again. come on be honest

      • sarah d

Marko and Melanie’s Statue routine, also Sasha and Twitch’s hip hop.

      • Claire

I watched Melanie and Neil’s dance many times.

      • Mocha

Melanie and Tadd’s broadway last night was great, I thought, and I love the routines Sarah and Claire mentioned. I do also agree with you though; I’ve been a little bored by this season, compared to the last couple. I know people criticized the format, but I think Season 7 had some of the best routines I’ve seen on the show, or at least ones that I remember and rewatch every so often.

      • Margaret

melanie and marko: turn to stone, “left at the altar” hip hop
caitlynn and mitchell’s “to love you more” contemporary
        twitch and sasha’s hip hop
neil and melanie’s contemporary (that leap, wow)
        tadd and melanie’s broadway

those i could watch again and again and NEVER get tired of them.

      • MK

I couldn’t disagree more. Adam is correct – most boring, lackluster season I have watched. (I’ve seen all but two). You know it’s bad when I enjoy the guest performances in elimination night better than the contestants’ routines.

      • MK

Oops. Not Adam writing this recap. I still agree with the writer though

      • randyfitzimmons

i agree, and i think the main problem has been the choreo. i miss the earlier seasons with wade robson, and mia michaels as regular contributors. i think they need to find some new people with a fresh take…TOO MUCH TYCE.

      • alan of montreal

it’s funny with the choreo this season–for the most part, the stalwarts haven’t produced their most exceptional work this season, and the newbies haven’t given us all that much to look forward to (even Chris Scott has been a little inconsistent). There have been a few standout routines–Caitlynn and Pasha in the Tango, Sasha and Twitch in Hip Hop, Marko and Melanie in contemporary–but certainly not on the level of previous years. They should start poaching from other countries. May I suggest Sabrina Matthews from Canada? She’s been producing some stellar work for the Canadian edition.

      • alan of montreal

I loved Spencer Riff’s work this season, as well, especially the one last night with Melanie and Tadd, and I think he did the one with the prison bars with Ashley and whatsisnamebreakdancer too.

    • christine

Not to mention there will be no D4YL. Jeez.

    • AaronisThinking

Yeah, this Lanford girl tries so hard to be snarky in all her posts she always just comes across as ill-informed and borderline-hateful.

      • kim

I agree with your comments about the commentator

      • Squishmar

I thought Lanford Beard was a man.

      • alan of montreal

I think he is–there was a video of him interviewing someone at Comic Con

      • Squishmar

Okay Alan, if you saw a video of Lanford interviewing someone and can still only say “I think he’s a man”…. I don’t know what that says about Lanford Beard. LOL

    • Luka

This is a good season but not without its problems so I appreciate it when reviewers point out some of the issues that don’t work. This top 6 is not as versatile as past years, especially in ballroom and hip hop. Season 3 and Season 4′s Top 6 were better overall than this season.

      • alan of montreal

I don’t think that it’s that they’re not versatile–I think it’s that they haven’t really been given a chance to be versatile. Some dancers have barely gotten anything out of their genres, and the more you’re able to do stuff outside your genres, the better you get at it.

  • sarah d

Tadd is not as gratifying to watch as Ricky. He and Caitlynn should go.

    • christine

      Totally agree.

    • alan of montreal

Ricky bores me to tears. Tadd always has a mischievous twinkle in his eye, which I like

    • D

I like them both, but Tadd has more of an unpredictable streak, which I really like.

  • LD

I know it’s wishful thinking, but I wish Melanie was going home. I am sick of her getting her style or easy dances (the Nappy Tab # last nite was sad, she was NOT good) Maybe if she had to do some other style I may think differently. I want her challenged like the others.

    • Aunt Sassy

Oh please – I’d like to see you get your A$$ on that stage and do that routine 1/4 as good as Melanie did last night. Something tells me you couldn’t even with 4 months of rehersals (instead of the 7 hours she got) and for $1 Million dollars. Keep on hating HATER – those who can – like Melanie – DO and those that can’t – like YOU – HATE.

    • jen

Puh–lease! They only look easy because she makes them look easy. She’s THAT good.

    • Perri

I agree somewhat with LD that Melanie had an easier road. I looked back at all the dances and it was lop-sided. HOWEVER she is still one of the best Lady comtemp I seen in years. Sasha is great also. I can’t wait until these ladies perform in the Finals and duke it out for the best this season

  • jules

    are kent and lauren dating?

    • Claire

I always assumed Kent wouldn’t actually be interested in the girls so much.

      • christine

You’d probably be correct, although it’s a shame. For the girls. Huge win for the cute gay guys out there.

      • alan of montreal

I’m gay, and I don’t get that sense from him at all (not that I can always tell accurately, of course). I think he just comes across as really young, which people mistake for gayness, for some reason.

      • Squishmar

I never thought Kent was gay either.

    • H

Do you mean Lauren Froderman? No, because Lauren is dating Dominic Sandoval, also known as D-Trix. He was on SYTYCD Season 3 and was an All-Star last season which is how they met. They’ve been dating for quite a while now.

      • jules

        thanks! : )

      • christine

        Lucky girl!

      • Jen

        really?! wow. Good on her.

      • chauncey

        Really???!!??!! How interesting…cool for them.

    • Jen

also, are Janette and Jason still dating?

      • Margaret

no from what I remember they broke up a number of months again, before she left for a stint in London with the cast of “Burn the Floor”

    • 3 left feet

That was certainly an interesting kiss Kent planted on Lauren.

    • J

Lauren is dating DTrix (Dominic) from season 3 … The dude from Quest who is s judge on anerica’s best dance crew now …

  • Squishmar

I suppose Caitlynn and I’m torn between Ricky and Tadd. Tadd is very entertaining and I used to love Ricky but he’s kind of peaked for me.

  • Natalie

OK, they need to stop trying to make Pia Toscano happen. That single was bland and forgettable and her skin was really, really orange. She was out of place on SYTCD…like they squeezed her in the show at the last minute.

    • christine

      Thank you!!!!

    • Faz

She was awful and she has developed a goat voice.

      • alan of montreal

and she kept squinting while she was singing

    • D

I didn’t watch AI this year, but after the outrage after she was eliminated, I looked up some videos. Not impressed.

  • Daryl

I totally disagree. I think the two final routines were very good. And Melanie’s solo was amazing.

  • christine

I will say this about Caitlynn – that girl is first class. The way she has presented herself has been amazing. She and Ricky should both be proud of what they accomplished.

    • Jen

      agreed.

    • D

I agree. She is such a cutie as well.

  • Gaby

Who is this Lanford person? Where is Adam?!

    • christine

Lanford has done recaps on occasions when adam’s been busy, like during comic con, and notably THEY ALL HAVE BEEN UNREMARKABLE (actually worse than that – usually full of errors and totally off the mark.)

      • Gaby

Thank you! After I read the post, I had to look to see who wrote it. It wasn’t funny, witty, or insightful so I knew it couldn’t be Adam!

      • alan of montreal

Adam always does Wednesday, Lanford does Thursdays

  • deniseo

I did not think last night was a snoozefest at all! At least 4 stellar memorable routines! I think Ricky and Caitlynn are both very talented, perhaps even moreso than Tadd, but just not good enough to beat Melanie or Sasha in the end. Looks to be a good final!

    • christine

Yes, if this had been a season where they hadn’t done gender parity, I think caitlynn would have made it. But i do think it will be a good final.

  • darla p

please please please EW could you please give us someone who actually likes the show to write about it. This has been the most talented group of dancers ever to compete and you could only consider it boring if you felt that a consistently high level offered less drama than having to watch less proficient dancers stumble more often.

    • christine

Your last sentence summed it up perfectly, if that’s what people want to call a criticism, I’ll take it.

  • Derek

I think the dancers are excellent this season. I just don’t the the choreography has been as good.

    • Derek

      *think

  • ijustwannaknow

what was the name of the song that all six dancers danced to at the beginning of the show with the flower in the middle?

    • alan of montreal

it was Lia something–but I loved that routine! That choreographer should do more.

  • laura

I’m not even gonna mention the four finalists because I called it this morning and think the right people made it through. What I’m left wondering about is the “bad boys of dance” number. Was that supposed to be a joke? Aside from the tumbling, I didn’t see anything your average dance minded 8th grader wouldn’t be able to do.

    • alan of montreal

I know–hot bodies to look at, but pretty clumsy execution. I wasn’t impressed at all. And they have a hit show, too?
