'Glee' actor Darren Criss in talks to replace Daniel Radcliffe in 'How to Succeed in Business'

Glee star Darren Criss is in talks to succeed Daniel Radcliffe as the lead in the Broadway musical revival How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, according to Criss’ rep. (Deadline first reported the news.) If a deal is struck, Criss would replace the Harry Potter star — who plays the corporate ladder-climbing J. Pierrepont Finch — during a three-week stint from Jan. 3 to Jan. 22. As a result, Criss would reportedly miss shooting an episode and a half of Glee.

Before playing Glee‘s gay heartthrob Blaine Anderson, Criss first garnered attention in 2009 thanks to the Harry Potter parody A Very Potter Musical. Criss co-wrote the music and lyrics while attending the University of Michigan, and starred (and sang) as the titular teenage wizard. Once the stage musical was posted on YouTube, it became a viral smash. And so, in a roundabout way, the 24-year-old actor is particularly qualified to take over for Radcliffe, who’ll return to making movies once his commitment to How to Succeed in Business ends in January. Criss can next be seen in Glee: The 3D Concert Movie, which hits theaters on Aug. 12.

    • Woot

I would LOOOOVVVEEE to see a picture of you. Darren Criss may not be the hottest man on the planet, but he is undeniably attractive.

      • Kat

LOL you’re both nuts. Darren Criss is SUPER hot.

      • Beth

        I think you’ll find he’s actually supermegafoxyawesomehot

    • Fog cue

I’m sure your wh0re mother was thinking the same thing when she shat you out of her f*cked up kooch.

      • Nat

Wow!! That was really uncalled for. I don’t like glee myself but I would not say anything like that. I don’t think he’s a “heartthrob” like they say he is too.

      • Sara

WOOOWW. Everyone here is REAL mature guys. Good job. Just one thing: next time, read up on the person before you go hating on him. Also, why bother? Whats going to happen if you hate on him? Is that gunna make him not do Broadway? Grow up people. Please.

    • ap

respect that fact that attaractiveness is subjective

    • abadstroller

(tsk tsk) Children…please play nice. Remember: No name calling, and use your “inside” voices!

    • wino

in all fairness, EW didnt select the best pic of the guy for this story.

    • econruth

      I think he’s really hot!

      • Glenn

        I agree!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • M

      You’re crazy! He’s gorgeous!

      • Glenn

        He’s gorgeous!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Renata

You CLEARLY haven’t ever seen the fangirls around him. He IS a heartthrob.

    • xanny

Darren Criss has to be one of the most attractive guys in the world. He’s himself. He’s anything but a douche-bag. Quit judging appearances and start judging personality. Don’t criticize something you don’t understand. Unless you have seen any of his projects you have nothing to judge him off of. Even if he isn’t beautiful to you his talent is indisputable. And when it comes to musical theater, he has more experience than Daniel Radcliffe will ever have.

      • lls

really? ever? you don’t think starring in two broadway shows (although one was a straight play) puts daniel radcliffe a little ahead of darren? or at least equal? i mean the starkids stuff is good but, not quite broadway.

      • Glenn

        You are so right!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Glenn

YOU are so wrong! He is Talented , handsome, and the best actor, singer on Glee. I see him going to mega stardom in the future. I hope to God he is successful.

  • Blah

This wasn’t the best picture of him, and personally he’s not that hot. Is he even Broadway good? I highly doubt any of the cast if ‘Glee’ will be a damn thing after their stint on the show is done. Maybe, a box office flop here and there but nothing and they will fade into the unknown black whole they came out off.

    • allie

Check out his musicals. He’s actually very talented with theater.

And I’m happy for Darren. I’m just not a big fan of him missing Glee haha!

    • Michelle

Both Matthew Morrison and Lea Michelle were on Broadway before Glee doofus. Jenna U. (can’t spell her last name) was Lea’s understudy and the young man who plays Artie was in a boy band. Exactly what are your accomplishments? Or is “Blah” an accurate description of you?

      • Joe

Jenna was not Lea’s understudy but yes she was in Spring Awakening with her.

      • Blah

Broadway? Be serious, not many people keep up with Broadway. You didn’t even know who she was until “Glee”. And by accomplishment I mean doing more than one project that is successful and adds to their career acheivement. You seriously think any of them will be big stars after ‘Glee’ they may do a little something here and there but nothing that justifies them as a bonified star. I’d put my money on that Lea girl, gotta admit don’t watch Glee but on the East Coast they play her HP computer commercial to death, good PR, btw. And you said that ofher kid was in a band? I looked it up, anyone can be in a band, has he sold records, gone gold? Platinum? Grammy? Been on Billboard? Uhhh, NO. All of them need to soak up this money from ‘Glee’ and put it in their piggy bank, cause after this its buh-bye. And you know it.

      • Kat

Who cares if not many people keep up with everything on Broadway? It’s a viable career choice for a lot of the Glee kids, should they decide to try it. If they weren’t autotuned to death, you could tell most of them have good enough voices. Plus, Broadway produces some genuine stars anyway. Idina Menzel and Kristen Chenowith were recognizable names to even non-theater geeks after Wicked. Anyways, these kids (and Glee) have the name recognition now that any Broadway show they do will promote itself as “starring X from Glee”, which will keep them in an ongoing cycle of at least moderate fame. Probably. Some of them might fade back into the woodwork, and who really cares anyway? Success does not equal fame.

    • Regs

Gee another moron who knows nothing. Lea Michele has had more a career than most actors currently working. They have other project in the wings already. Will they be superstars who knows, but I think several of them will continue to be working actors in a a variety of projects.

      • Blah

Lmfaoooo, are you serious? Be real, you didn’t know who she WAS until Glee. And other projects? All “actors” say that. She may have a movie here or there, a TV cameo, and she may keep rolling on the Glee gravy train. I doubt she’ll ever be a real celebrity (shes a right now celebrity). Its just the truth, plenty of actors have only one project that made them a star. I’ve seen commercials with Lea in it, but she sings in all of them. Thats really annoying, btw.

    • Dave

Just for your information, Lea Michelle and Jonathon Groff (Jesse) were the leads on Broadway in Spring Awakening. Britany was a dancer for Beyonce and a choreographer for music videos. So no, they are not all one hit wonders. Maybe your mouth shouldnt write checks your butt isnt prepared to cash!

      • SuzieB

And Chris Colfer has written a TV movie screenplay and filming a movie of another screenplay. Not to mention he has a book deal.

      • Jess

I knew who she was. I saw her at the Tony awards and thought she was really good so I bought the Spring Awakening soundtrack and have been a fan since. I think they will all do well (some better than others) as they are all talented in more than one area.

    • Karina

Dude, Darren practically grew up in theatre. It was the first thing he’s decided to do and it’s the main reason why he had a ton of fans even before Glee. He went to college at UM, where he and his friends wrote and produced musicals, one of which caused them to unintentionally rise to fame in the Harry Potter fandom.
Being on Glee doesn’t make him any less talented

  • Kal

It’s J. Pierrepont Finch, not James Pierrepont Finch. Does EW need to hire a fact checker?

Also, because he played Harry Potter in a spoof on youtube doesn’t make him “particularly qualified” to take over for Daniel Radcliffe. His training at the University of Michigan makes him qualified, but his youtube video doesn’t.

    • Jane Doh

Boo, his youtube video just proves his ability to make it on Broadway. Plenty of people have trained in the Fine Arts at various universities, but they can go through their whole life without any success. Darren is famous because of those youtube videos.
I think it’s neat that Darren could succeed Dan on Broadway, though I’m still waiting for A Very Potter Threequel. :)

      • ZRobl

modern family and glee are both ftaanstic! I love that they are both hilarious and hage such diverse characters that lost of different people can identify with.

    • Johnification

Actually, the implication would actually make the J. stand for “John”…

    • liza

I’m pretty sure it’s just an allusion to the fact that someone who spoofed Harry Potter would be taking over for the real Harry Potter…

      • Jessica

  • fiona

Haha this is cool.. I’d rather see the two Potters on stage together though!

    • abadstroller

An idea crazy enough that it might just work: Since Daniel Radcliffe did the role in an american accent, Darren Chris could do it in a BRITISH accent! (just a thought–not all of them are gems….)

  • Meredith

The Potterness of this show is astounding.

  • chocolateislove

LOL that would be ironic if Harry Potter took over Harry Potter.

    • Bunny

Actually Harry Freakin Potter will be taking over for Harry Potter lol

      • Salvador

  • Kurt

I was all excited with this news at the start because I thought it meant Darren was leaving Glee! Sadly its only for 3 weeks. Booooo! Get him gone already.

    • zengarden

Hah, I love this comment if only for the sheer irony of who wrote it.

      • Jess

Oh I really wish he was leaving properly.

      • Lily

Yeah, especially because the poster identify him/herself as “Kurt”… Maybe it is a “Kurtofsky fan”?

  • andy1992

LOVE Darren Criss. He is the one true discovery from “Glee”. (Matthew Morrison was already a broadway name) Boy can he sing. And YES he is very good looking. it is a plain fact that anyone with sight can agree.

    • abadstroller

Love D-Criss too. It WOULD be nice to see some other promising unknowns or quasi-unknowns (like the young theater majors or even YouTube viral vid kids) with real talent on Glee. I haven’t been able to watch the Glee audition show–maybe someone interesting will come of that….

    • Kate

Sorry the real finds from glee are Lea Michele and Chris Colfer. Lea of course was known to the B-Way World but now she is more global.

      • abadstroller

Agree that Chris Colfer was the REAL find. Survive bullying in school, graduate from HS, audition for your first real job against more seasoned performers for offered roles that you’re probably not the best fit for, impress the hell out of the producers who WRITE a new part to suit your talents, perform in an oft-mocked “singing” com-dram/dram-com, become a neo-celeb and gay icon via said show (now wildly successful), win a Golden Globe AND an Emmy…um, where was I?

  • Kelly

Darren is ok getting bit over hyped.

  • a person

would rather have a very potter threequel!

    • Amy

Yes!!! While I think it is awesome he might be on Broadway, I would much rather have a Very Potter threequel!!!!

  • Lily

Why not Chris Colfer replacing Daniel Radcliffe? It is only for 3 weeks…

    • abadstroller

      Verry interesting….

    • Liz Lemon

Wasn’t one of the actors being considered?
I just need to hurry up and see it before Dan leaves.

  • QT

3 weeks. That’s what you would call ‘gimmick casting’. If they wanted someone with quality they require a longer stay. I’d rather see someone that’s not the flavor of the month just because he’s on a hit tv show.

    • mscisluv

Radcliffe is astounding in this role, but he would have been considered gimmick casting at the beginning, too.

    • klainebow

3 weeks is what you call them needing a temporary replacement while Daniel shoots scenes for another movie. Nothing to do with the person who is replacing him

    • Mark

If you don’t like it, take your business eeweshlre simple ^_^Christmas is a HUGE money-making holiday and that’s just about it. I’m pretty sure that the fundamentalists of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam aren’t going to be on here browsing shirts. And if they are, I’m sure they will not buy a shirt that takes their holiday so lightly.

  • stephenKC

I don’t understand this news item — it doesn’t appear to have anything to do with ComicCon … so what’s it doing in EW this week?

  • Noodley

It’s a total gimmick, but I love the irony of it. And I think it’s so cool to see how far Darren has climbed in less than a year. Last year he was at ComicCon for AVPM. Now he’s there for Glee. I just hope the rest of Team Starkid will get their day in the sun because they’re all immensely talented.
