Two-time Tony winner Cynthia Nixon will return to Broadway after five years away from the stage. Nixon will follow in the footsteps of Emma Thompson and Kathleen Chalfant in tackling Margaret Edson’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play Wit.
Nixon will take on the role of a poetry professor who undergoes an experimental cancer treatment. With this play, Nixon is also returning to the Manhattan Theatre Club, where she won her most recent Tony for 2006′s Rabbit Hole. She also won a Tony for 1995′s Indiscretions.
MTC’s Artistic Director Lynne Meadow will direct this production of Wit, which is playing for a limited engagement. Previews begin Thursday, Jan. 5, 2012, and the show opens Thursday, Jan. 26, 2012. Single tickets will be available Tuesday, Sept. 6.

FYI: Cynthia Nixon won a Tony for Rabbit Hole. She was nominated for Indiscretions. No fact checker for ew.com? Hire me! I need a job.
PS: That makes Cynthia a one time Tony WINNER and a two time Tony NOMINEE
One final note: Frances Sternhagen won the Tony in 1995 for Best Feature Actress in a Play, not Cynthia. Cynthia was nominated alongside her but ultimately 7 time Tony nominee Frances Sternhagen won (for The Heiress).
Love her!! She’s an amazing actress..hope she wins another one!
Totally agree … I watched a rerun of the SATC series finale last week, and damn if she didn’t make me cry, even though it was maybe the third time I’d seen it. She’s awesome.
i love Wit. The Emma Thompson HBO movie just hit me so hard.
Emma Thompson and Audra McDonald were incredible in the TV movie.
I hope this doesn’t effect Cynthia being on “The Big C”.
Kathleen Chalfant was amazing on stage, as was Emma Thompson on film. The play is beautifully-written and moving.
Cynthia Nixon is amazing. One Tony, and 2 Emmys? Or is it three? Too bad she did star in “Rabbit Hole” movie. Kidman good, but Cynthia owned that role.
JUDITH LIGHT did the role on b’way too.
Emma Thompson was wonderful in the movie. The best though was the stage version with Judith Light. She blew that part out of the water. After seeing both versions, I can’t picture anyone else in that role but Ms. Light. Cynthia Nixon is a good actress, but she’s no Judith Light.
