This is a tv show. You are only getting alittle of the story. Not all “travelers” are the same. THis is for ratings. Anyone that believes this is how all Travelers live, I have a bridge for sale.lol If you are interested in the true culture read books don’t rely on entertainment TV for the answers. From information I have read alot of travelers are upset on how they are being portrayed on hte show.

I’ve watched the whole series and have come away with a few comments: 1. If they aren’t wanted at most wedding reception halls, why don’t they build their own? 2. How much do the dresses cost? 3. Where are the dresses stored after the wedding?

I’d watch if I could find teh video somewhere :( it isn’t on iTunes or Amazon Instant.

I enjoy the show. I am sorry to say that people still live on the past. We often are unforgiving of things we don’t understand. If you expect bad behavior that may be all you get. perhaps if we live judging how each person behaves rather than how we see a group is percived our lives are enriched. Remember this is entertainment and as such should not be taken as gospel.

    this is not a gipsy

I am devastatingly fascinated with this show. I am sure it is quite one sided for television, but it is all is like a huge train wreck; I don’t want to look, but I’ve got to look.

I think that the people on here who are judging the irish travellers should take a moment and reflect on themselves. every race has their good people and their bad people. I don’t see anyone bemoaning the fact about geisha’s on here. or slaves, or any other culture. it’s their perogotive to take their children out of school (and in their defense if i could take my kids out i would, american schools suck!).so they clean, would you rather they live in filth? and not once did i see them trash anything on the series, even the dressmaker had changed her opinion on them.

Yeah, we get the Gypsies through here a couple times a year. The men run phony drive-way asphalting schemes: they just use black paint. And roofing scams as well. The women and children will go into a shop and destract the owner while the others steal whatever thay can lay hands on. They may ask to use someone’s bathroom and then take valuables from their houses. The police alert us by TV news when thedy’re in town.

    Few things come to mind.

Schooling. In the US, there is the option of home-schooling. Not always a good option, but often far better than public school offerings.

Travelling. My family travelled every summer, all summer and any weekend my father could get 4 days off. I’ve been places in North America that guide books only write about.
    I LOVE to travel.

Labor. What is wrong with laboring for a living?
My father was a machinist for 40+ years and although his hands were never ‘clean,’ there were certain types of dirt that never stuck to him, such as would have happened if he’d been a politician, banker, investment “person” or other parasite.

Travelling. Lifestyle choice –yes, it is! As soon as my daughter is in college, I’m selling up, dividing the rest, putting a few things in storage, and hitting every 2-lane in North America.
I’ll probably do some ‘casual work’ along the way, but given my college degree, the fact that I am going to live full time in a motorhome, I won’t be a “traveller,” but a full-time Rv’er.

    Perspective on different cultures?
    Nah.
Certainly more a matter of “disapproval” by the mainstream.

    Marrying young.
Uh, not for me. I sure hope not for my daughter.
Besides, I was married (to a drunk) and really don’t see any personal, financial, or other benefit in it for me or for mine.

    A man’s world.
Always has been. “Empowerment” means nothing.

From what I understand the Irish Travelers are just that….Travelers! Not a real gypsy. So why have a show called my big fat gypsy wedding when they are just travelers. Could someone explain please.
