PopWatch Confessional: Which 'summer song' do you dread hearing?

Summer songs: Usually we talk about them in the happy sense. They’re catchy, they make us feel good, and they’re guilt free as long as the sun is shining. You’re allowed to have “Escape (The Piña Colada Song)” on a playlist as long as it’s titled “Summer.” But today, as I was driving and singing along to Garth Brooks’ “Two Piña Coladas” on the radio, I found myself panicking that the station, obviously feeling the summer vibe on this holiday weekend, would play Smash Mouth’s “All Star.” Just thinking of the opening notes, after all these years, makes me wince. Now playing the radio in the car feels like Russian Roulette. Yes, I can just change the station if it comes on, but the song will have won.

What “summer song” do you live in fear of hearing?

All Summer Long by Kid Rock!

    • yibbet

      • themusicaddictblogspot.com

you both are absolutely right, a no talent hack stealing a great song

      • Fresh

        Amen!

      • Adwina Lambert

that stupid LFO song!! though the boys were really HOT!! tee-hee!

      • Leena

If You Steal My Sunshine!!! Worst. Summer. Song. Ever. I don’t even remember who sings that crapfest!

      • Melissa

I believe Len sings Steal My Sunshine. I had to hear it twice at work today. No thanks!

      • Damien

God, no. The song was once a form of medieval TORTURE :D

    • Dixie

He stole 2 great songs, actually…he’s also ripping off Warren Zevon’s “Werewolves of London”.

      • Mindy

        So true.

      • maryb

The first time I heard that I thought it was a joke. Then I realized it was a “new” song. Terrible!

    • Chris

“New Kids on The Block had a bunch of hits, Chinese food makes me sick and I think it’s fly when girls stop by for the summer, for the summer.” LFO!!!!

      • Adwina Lambert

true!! but the boys were hot tee-hee!!

      • Fiveagainstone

Ugh!!! I call it the Abercrombie & Fitch song. Worst. Song. Ever.

      • PN

I still like that LFO song. It had a good mix of pop and hip-hop sounds within that one recording.

      • Emma

NO WAY. That song will NEVER get old.

      • Jill

It gave me warm fuzzies when i listened to it the other day on the radio….it was a hit with everyone in the car. Cheesey – yes. Delightfully so….

      • buddy

not only one of the worst summer songs ever…this was one of the worst songs ever!!!!

    • Snsetblaze

I normally like Kid Rock’s stuff but I hate that particular song. But I don’t like the original either.

    • Mindy

Yes!!!!!! A thousand times yes. This song is one of the crappiest ever. I HATE it. Blech.

    • Liz

      Agreed!

    • Joshua

      I EFFING HATE THAT SONG.

  • JD

    Tik Tok by Ke$ha

    • Shannon

Or, anything by Ke dollar sign ha.

  • Fog cue

Anything after “Just Dance” by that cun-ty h0 Lady Gaga.

    • Will

really with the name calling? How old are we?

  • Courtney

“Hey Soul Sister” by Train and “I’m Yours” by Jason Mraz

    • Meg

Cannot stand “Hey Soul Sister.” That was beat to death.

      • Silv

Unfortunately, it wasn’t. It still pops up on the radio from time to time. My car radio, on the other hand, was beaten to death the last time it came on.

    • Dixie

Agreed on both. Never liked either. But I have to confess I did like Drops of Jupiter the first couple million times I heard it.

    • BLT

Train’s “Hey Soul Sister” makes me want to destroy my radio…..i HATE that song so much it makes me shudder.

    • Mindy

Another winner. Train’s “Hey Soul Sister” is terrible. I hate it. I switch the channel immediately when it comes on the radio.

    • tonicate10

What even is “lipstick stains on the front lobe of my left side brain”?

  • mal

I generally like Katy Perry, but I hate California Girls. Maybe it is because I do not like getting “sand in my stilettos” or live anywhere dear the west coast, but I can’t stand that song.

    • Buddymoore

This was my choice as well. Every single time I got in my car to go somewhere last summer that song would come on. I didn’t matter if I was driving somewhere an hour away or right down the road, I would hear it before I arrived at my destination.

    • Snsetblaze

Anything by Katy Perry or Bruno Mars.

      • MCS

Oh my god, Bruno Mars is literally the worst thing. I would listen to Kid Rock’s All Summer Long on repeat for an hour rather than hear any Mars song once.

      • JD

I don’t like Katy Perry, but how can you NOT like Bruno Mars?!?!?!?

      • PN

I like Bruno Mars’s other hit songs he has had on his own, but I do not like The Lazy Song. It is one of the dumbest sounding songs lyric and song wise. Did some 16-year old teens produce that cheesy song? He might have had some off time and made that song. Fortunately, it didn’t hit No. 1. The whistling hook and the not doing anything themes just don’t click for me. That’s the only song on his solid album that I don’t like.

      • BJohnson

I’m going to school this summer and though cheesy, I love that song because I wish I could be that lazy for a day. No chance while getting my masters. LOL

    • Mindy

And yet another good choice. This Katy Perry song is awful. And I was born and raised in southern California. Yeesh I hate. And I hate that she swiped a song title form The Beach Boys and then changed it to make it look dumb.

    • Steph

      California Gurls. BLEH.

However, California Girls by the Beach Boys is a great summer song.

  • nk8950

I love “All Star” and all the other songs listed above.

    • wendy

      Wow! you have bad taste.

    • RT

I do like “All Star” too, though not any of the other songs mentioned so far.

    • Sam J

I did alotta drugs back then, but “All Star” was the soundtrack to the comming Apocalypse. Y2K was approching and this song was “calming the masses” to the eventual nuclear holocaust. Damn! I miss dope.

    • mike

I like All-Star also. I’m not a big fan of any of the others mentioned though.

  • ks

    anything from the beach boys

    • LOL

      You suck.

    • Foresha

Not a Beach Boys fan either!

      • LOL

        You suck, too.

      • Kellie Osborn

I don’t like the Beach Boys at all… My Father was a huge BB fan and used to play their records all the time and now their songs are like nails being scratched down a chalkboard!

    • Trazadone

Word! I hate The Beach Boy’s music, I never understood the appeal.

      • LOL

        You suck, also.

    • JD

      Everything but “Barbara Ann” sucks.

    • Andy

All I can think of when I hear the Beach Boys is being 8 years old watching Full House and Uncle Jesse was constantly playing drums (I think) for them. Like how is that normal?!

  • KTobin78

Katrina and The Waves – Walking On Sunshine

    • amie

I second that! Hate that song.

      • Dixie

One of my least favorite songs of all time.

    • Chris

The Glee mashup with Halo made me love that song. “I can see your Halo, and don’t it feel good!”

    • Remerdre

When the cops take me away and my friends/neighbors wonder why the nice, quiet girl finally snapped, just have them check the radio. I guarantee “Walking on Sunshine” will be playing.

    • Fiveagainstone

      Second. Worst. Song. Ever.

      • JD

        Behind “Right Round”.

  • tracy bluth

Soak Up the Sun, Sheryl Crow. I’m sure there was one point when I found the song catchy, but after hearing it SO MANY TIMES I can’t stand it. Also Train’s Soul Sister, but that’s a song I’ve always hated.

    • Will

the part where she goes “Every time I turn around, I’m looking up, you’re looking down…etc” it sounds like she’s whining. Can’t stand it (sorry if I got it stuck in anyone’s head)

    • Anonymous

Thank you! That’s the first one I thought of. I would also add anything by Bruno Mars and anything new from the Black Eyed Peas. And, of course Hey Soul Sister.

    • Heather

Yes I HATE Soak up the Sun! Overplayed and just annoying IMO

      • Regina George

The song is living proof Sheryl Crow can’t sing.

    • Jennifer

umm…THIS! “Soak Up the Sun” is not only my least favorite summer song, but it might be my least favorite song ever.

    • Mindy

I can’t even remember if I ever liked this song, “Soak Up the Sun”. Wow, it was overplayed. Overplayed!!! Radio, why do you do this? Stop overplaying songs!

  • dara

bruno mars is great singer but the lazy song is literally lazy and dry yawnn

    • Will

Even the first time I heard it, I hated it

      • dipshat

        YES!

    • derstk

i hate this song so, so, so, so much.

  • whatevs

I have to second California Gurls by Katy Perry. That song grates on my nerves.

    • Will

Yep, have to agree. Also “I’ve got a feeling” Black Eyed Peas. Can’t. Stand. It!

      • Chris

When I hear that song all I can think of are those awful CBS shows.

      • Jonathan

        Amen!!

  • tofuchili

Endless Summer Nights by Richard Marx.

  • shlamc

    Waterfalls by TLC

    • @shlamc

What? Shame on you and your bad taste.

    • MissVampireDiaries

lol, what? That’s a great song.

    • Steve

This song is AWFUL! tlc is overrated!

  • Tygor1

I DREAD hearing that song by Fergie “Big Girls Don’t Cry”…when it came out during the summer of 2006 (I think) it played on almost EVERY radio station, til I started listening to talk radio. :p

    • tracy bluth

Oh dear God…for some reason that song seems to be on every time I go to the gym or the grocery store for the past two months now.

    • Ms. Adams

I hated that song when it first came out, but I grew to love it over time. And you’re right, it’s always playing at the gym or the grocery store.lol

    • Claire

The way she says “serenity” really gets on my nerves.

  • Laura

The Lazy Song is brilliant! Perfect song for the 3-day weekends of summer!

    • Sincy

It’s so bad. Of course, all his songs are bad — but that one is even bad by his standards.
