'SYTYCD': Mary Murphy on the kissing mayhem

Well, Wednesday night’s show was like no other. Have we gone too far with sexually explicit numbers and themes? Even the judges went temporarily insane! This is my perspective on the kissing scene gone wild.

I was mesmerized with Marko and Melanie; again, beautiful choreography told a story of love and in the middle of the number they had a passionate kiss. After I told them how wonderful they were, I genuinely wanted to know from Melanie how hard it was to kiss someone so passionately that you were not involved with. I wanted to know because I could not kiss my partner on Broadway because he was engaged and it just didn’t feel right.

Melanie is so young and I really wanted to hear her answer, but before I could even finish what I said, Nigel Lythgoe jumped on top of me. At first I didn’t know it was him. It truly caught me off guard. He was fighting to kiss me, and yes, our lips did lock. But mine were sealed like a bank vault! It was like two rocks pressing up against each other, and not romantic at all. I was having an out of body experience and couldn’t believe what was taking place live. As we came up for air, Kristin Chenoweth was kissing Lil’ C! By now, I’m in shock as Nigel got up and kissed Lil’ C as well! All of us, including Cat, were laughing uncontrollably wondering what is happening here?!

But I still did not have the answer to my question. So behind the scenes, I finally had my chance to ask Melanie. She said it was her first “show kiss,” and to make matters worse, her boyfriend was in the audience. He was very supportive of her so she was very happy with the outcome. I’m sure this is an experience she will never forget!

Now as far as the actual dancing, it was a great night that made it hard for America to choose. With all the performances on a high level, I found myself nervous as to who would be put in danger of going home. I think we were all shocked when Caitlyn and Mitchell fell to the bottom after an exciting gyrating samba. But Robert and Miranda, who did peppy Broadway, and Ashley and Chris zombie’s piece did not connect the judges. We were unanimous, with the boys all in agreement that Chris’ hip-hop was at a higher level than Robert, and nobody felt like Mitchell was under consideration to leave. Robert had such spirit and the choreographers behind the scenes told me they loved working him, so his exit was tough for us. We were a split vote on the girls, and Nigel decide after the discussion to send Miranda home. It did go back and forth, because we felt Miranda had a better solo, but that Ashley had better performances over the last few weeks. As much as we hate to see really great dancers go home we must get down to a champion!! What a night, and what fun it was to sit next to Kristin Chenoweth. We had a lot of great laughs and both of us are country girls at heart.

Stepping off for now,
Mary

I took it more like nigel wanted to interrupt her so that we wouldn’t be reminded that melanie is married. they get more excitement/press if people think melanie and marko might be in a relationship. that being said, where is melanie’s husband and how is he ok with all the kissing?! i would have liked melanie to have gotten the chance to answer mary’s question.

    • Mae

oops read again and mary refers to the guy as melanie’s boyfriend but i couldve sworn she said she was married in georgia in one episode.

      • Mae

ok after googling i found out she said “marietta, georgia” i guess i was just confused by her ring and my poor hearing.

    • rosie

What’s wrong with Mary Murphy’s face? She looks like a creature from a bad horror movie. GROSS!

      • kahuna

        It’s still better than yours.

      • rosie

I’m sorry for being a mean little pig.

    • Squishmar

I really thought there was something between her and Marko. Oh well. Anyway, Mary is obviously not an actress. Yes, kissing can be awkward in scenes, but more during rehearsals… in the moment of the play or whatever, you should be in character enough that it doesn’t matter. I’m sure Melanie and Marko felt the same way. His tears even at the beginning of that dance were real. They were great and I thought the judges’ shtick was fun. I only wished that Lil’ C had jumped on stage and kissed Cat. She was left out (but was probably relieved).

While I wouldn’t put it past Nigel to be that conniving, I don’t think Melanie is married. Mary refers to Melanie’s boyfriend in this article and she is only 19. I did notice the ring she was wearing this week, maybe she is engaged?

    • Mandy P.

Oops I should have refreshed my page before posting that! Sorry.

  • AuH20

Is nobody proofreading this stuff before posting it? This reads as if it were dictated into a discount speech recognition program.

    • Matt

It really does have some pretty bad typos, doesn’t it? Like “with sexually elicit numbers” and “she will never forgot” – yikes.

    • F Marie

I agree with you. Lately, I have trouble reading on-line articles. I do not know if they are taking communications or mass communications classes. However, if they are, they really need to pay attention more. If they are paying attention, they really need to question the quality of their education.

  • s-k-s

Why was Mitchell not “under consideration to leave”? He has given two pretty weak solos.

I’m so tired of the contemporary bias in this show. Why bother casting other dancers of other styles?

    • Anne

      Seriously!

    • Brian

      *nods in agreement*
      sooooo.bored.with.contemporary.

    • LOL

But he’s had great performances and never should have been in the bottom three. Chris has given great performances across the board, too, but that Sonya piece this week was not.

  • CMP

PLEASE HELP – are there no editors, reviewers or summer interns who read these articles for typos, semantic lapses or bad writing?

    • Strepsi

For about th past year, EW.com has been completely un-proofread or edited. The job of Editor it seems is a lost art — or at least one EW’s bosses won’t spring for. The writers are good, and have FAST turnaround times, but EW’s bosses are not helping the integrity of journalism whatsoever.

      • rosie

They are too busy promoting gay rights. Liberal agenda job one, writing and editing second.

      • gazmo

As long as rosie promotes hetero wrongs EVERYONE should promote gay rights.
(maybe it will drive her off to hide in a cave with the rest of the folks who share her and bin Laden’s views).

      • LOL

Most blogs post first, then edit, in order to be able to put content out consistently throughout the day, even when an editor is busy with other things. They’ll probably get around to fixing it soon enough.

      • rosie

Again, I’m sorry for being a mean little pig.

  • Sheri

    I agree with S-k-S.

  • Regina Phalange

Miranda had an AMAZING solo. Can’t believe you cut her! :-(

  • Cameron J

WOW. She is a LOT less annoying in text.

    • tickles

Mary is adorable and seems to really care about all of the dancers.
I have read that many of the dancers feel being put on Mary’s “hot Tamale” train is an honor to them.

  • Cameron J

WOW. She is a LOT less annoying in text., Mary is.

  • Cameron J

Damnit. Now I’m gonna be crucified for my posting mistakes beyond recognition. >_>

  • gazmo

The dances include moves that have these dancers’ hands ALL over each other – dozens of times a night . . . but a KISS is too much for Ms. Murphy??
Although – I suppose you’re less likely to transfer an illness while groping each other than while swapping spit.
Either way it was a great performance (the dance, not Nigel and Mary’s kiss)

  • T2

Hard to tell if Mary intended to type “illicit” or “explicit”. She’s been sitting too close to Lil C, and is now making up words!

  • dawn

You guys made a huge mistake. Miranda was on her way to being one of the finalists. Robert was the one on that team that wasn’t the crowd favorite. You have to realize that there’s perhaps ONE person on a team that has a huge following: Ricky and Ryan. Ryan should have gone home last week because, oh my goodness, Miranda and Ricky would be amazing. Ashley? I give her one more week. Not that great and her solo was WEAK.

    • District 12

I agree with you Dawn. Ashley’s solo was awful. She should have been sent home. Hopefully Ashley will land in the bottom again and the judges can send her home next week.

    • frustrated

I completely agree that Ashley should have been sent packing, especially after reading an article on people.com, the judges broke down what happened backstage and Nigel said Ashley had the worst solo and Miranda had the best but he was the only one voting for Miranda. Apparently the other judges thought Ashley has been superior in the performance nights so she got to stay.

      • Michelle

I did notice that during the elimination show when Nigel pronounced that the vote was not unanimous, Lil C and Kristin were shaking there head. I’m assuming that meant Lil C and Kristin wanted her to stay.

      • Squishmar

I think Nigel wanted Miranda to stay. He had just said how much she had grown and Lil’ C was the one who had just praised Ashley.

    • igoreli

No, Ryan should go to top 4. She is great.

    • Squishmar

I was very disappointed Miranda was booted. Personally, I would have liked to see Caitlynn leave (she’s just not memorable to me) and would have loved to see a Mitchell/Miranda pairing. Miranda was definitely handicapped by a very weak partner and never pulling out the contemporary dance card for her weeks… although with Robert, I don’t know how great they would have been. But her solos were consistently incredible.

  • Dukewife

What happened to “dance for your life”? I would so love to hear an honest answer from the show. If they don’t decide on who is staying by how they dance in that SPECIFIC elimination then it’s pointless to make them dance it. Just kick them off. Nigel was close to mean to just dismiss Miranda the way he did this week. The audience had already said they didn’t like Ashley with their votes. She didn’t deserve to stay on previous performances or on her lackluster dance for your life routine. The audience is falling off because they let Iveta and Nick go and we’ve just about had it with Nigel and his preference for contemporary. Get rid of the guest judges please. Get some better/new coreographers and stop favoring individuals. Then ratings will go back up!

    • Becca

I agree wholeheartedly with Dukewife. I can’t believe the judges let Iveta and Nick go(who always gave fantastic performances). They had the bad luck to pick a Bollywood dance, which is the worst dance for any couple. The judges should have realized how much the audience loved their performances and should have kept them on the show. I, who was an avid watcher, am not interested in watching anymore, and I feel a lot of viewers feel the same way.

    • Ann

I agree, Dukewife. If the “Dance for Your Life” really doesn’t mean anything, why have them do it? So we can have one last opportunity to mourn departing dancers? Was very sad to see Chris go, after he had performed such an incredible solo.
