'So You Think You Can Dance': Discuss the Top 16 performances!

SYTYCD

After last week’s heartbreaking and infuriating double elimination, I can’t help but feel a pang of pity for poor Ryan Ramirez. Yes, she’s been pimped to the high heavens; yes, she dances with a perma-smile; and yes, her dance-for-your-life solo was a crumbly piece of bland candy. But had Nigel and Co. sent home Jordan and Robert like they should have two weeks ago, this post would have instead likely lamented that poor Missy and Wadi just never got a chance to show off their stuff. Now I’m forced to note that Ryan goes into tonight’s Top 16 week with a big ole target painted on her back — then again, maybe that’ll be enough to let her cheek muscles finally rest.

Chat here about how Ryan and the other 15 contestants fared tonight – as well has how Kristin Chenoweth handled herself as a guest judge — and then come back to EW.com tomorrow morning for my full recap!

So why are they having the revolving door of celebrity guest judges? I missed that memo…

    • steph

I’d rather have Cheno than Robin Antin and her joker face.

      • Shannon

amen to this. Robin Antin added nothing to the panel. Debbie Reynolds was a breath of fresh air, I just love that crazy old drunk who wanted to get into Wadi’s pants…

      • Ace

I love Cheno, but I’d rather have Adam Shankman back!

      • Jacob

At least Cheno was 10000xs better than the witchy Mia!! I actually like the revolving door of celebrity judges!! Kristin and Debbie Reynolds rocked!!!

    • Lydia

Agreed! So lame! They offer absolutely NOTHING

  • Veda Pierce

I love you SYTYCD…but I have to see who wins the voice.. See you in an hour Cat!

  • pumbaa

I want to marry Cat!!! She is so yummy!

    • Andy

British barbie needs to pronounce “gentlemen” correctly (not “gentemen”) – please.

      • Did you ever think

that perhaps it’s the British accent that makes Cat pronounce words the way she does, and when she hears you speak, she thinks your American accent makes you speak funny?

Slightly off the main topic – I saw where Ovation channel is re-running seasons 5 – 8 starting in August. Considering that is fairly recent, I wonder why they wouldn’t start at Season One (a season many current fans) and work their way up. The older seasons, further away from memory, would be more refreshing, yes?

    • allie

I have never heard of the Ovation channel, but if this is true, I am SOOO all over it!! I, too, wish they would start at the beginning. I never saw season 1 and I LOOOOVED season 2 so I would love for them to start at the beginning!

      • mike

Yeah, I didn’t even know I had it, but the other day I stumbled across this Fame (old series) marathon and in the corner of the screen was an add for SYTYCD coming in August. Jumped on line and got the rest of the info.

My family has been watching since the very first audition. Season 1 did not have the lovely and delightful Cat Deeley, she started with Season 2. Season 1 had a freakish looking plastic surgery junkie hosting, I think her name is Lauren Sanchez. She was horrendous and pretty much unwatchable. But we loved the dancers, especially Nick and Melody, and also Ryan, a B-boy who is a crewmate of Hok and Dominick. Definitely worth watching, just close your eyes when the host is on screen.

      • District 12

yeah the first host was awful to look at! Cat is so much easier on the eyes =)

    • Sarah El

Season 2 on is totally worth it. I couldn’t watch season 1, it was really dull. I just looked up some of the more memorable routines.

      • ps in seattle

Season 2 was my favorite season! I’m a huge Travis Wall fan, he has been my favorite contestant of all of the seasons. What incredible talent, so expressive. Also a huge fan of Allison and Ivan. Had row 2 tickets for the tour opener in Seattle!

    • Valley Girl

Yes! But would be better from the start. ITA.

    • Claire

I’m a huge fan of season 3! Sara. Pasha. Neil.

  • Julz

    OMG love Melanie and Marko.

    • steph

ditttooooo that was the CUTEST dance.

    • TV_Pete

Out of 3 weeks, Melanie and Marko “won” 2 of those weeks for both my wife and me.

I still wouldn’t mind Robert or Jordan being gone the first week and Ryan last week. Mostly, I miss Nick.

      • Idle

        @TV Pete

        This

    • Data’m

this was really lame hip hop. Melanie might have a sweetheart voice but her hip hop was just plain blah

  • Cinders

HOw do these people remember what they did when they were 3? I barely remember anything under 8.

    • JainaJade

I’m a strange person, I can remember back to 2 1/2. These are actual memories too, not prompted memories but then again I’m strange

      • AMF

It’s actually not that strange. Statistically speaking, 2 is when most people can recall a first memory.

      • orville

My niece has very specific memories from when she was 2. Me, I can hardly remember things from before I was 6.

  • boston keith

So Ryan has never been in love and she gets emotional about it? Very strange.

  • untapttalent

first of all mister vary assumes that everyone agrees that Jordan should have been sent home…that’s just not true. i can’t believe she was even on the chopping block. she’s one of my two favorite girls on the show, along with melanie. i’m extremely happy that jordan didn’t get sent home and was actually pretty happy with the four that did.

    • Data’m

because she doesn’t project emotion and her legs are never straight that I can see. Her walking in that dance tonight was just yuk

  • Savannah

Completely disagree. It was their worse performance by far; but they are not going anywhere anytime soon. The judges will see to it.

  • Gigi

Why does Cheno like Tasty’s number? She knows he’s a Broadway poser.

    • wendy

I don’t know what’s worse, Oreo’s routines or his judging. Wait, maybe it’s his mugging for the camera when he’s teaching them the routine! Agh!

  • Levente

I had just finished testing my mom that tonight was a great night and there isn’t a dance that I didn’t like so far. Then the last one came on. I just didn’t think it was that great, especially with the caliber of dancing tonight. Why did the judges like it so much?

    • Levente

Oops. Obviously I was teXting my mom. Not testing her.

  • E

How convenient Rayan got an emotional contemporary dance! just when she needed it. It’s got Nigel’s hands all over it!

    • mike

Yeah, call me negative, but even though I actually enjoyed the dance, I did think it was awfully convenient that this couple got a contemporary dance the week after they REALLY needed to justify their presence on the show after last weeks’ controversy (still bitter about Nick and truth is, not as excited about this season as I was).

      • boston keith

The loss of Nick will haunt the entire season. That was by far the worst earliest exit in the show’s history.

      • mike

boston keith, I agree. At least for me, watching tonight was kinda like watching a false top 16. I know Nick wound up in the bottom three due to voting, but in my (delusional?) mind, it was an accident / mistake that happened at exactly the wrong time and wound up with Top 10 contender eliminated too early.

      • Bantha Poodoo

Nick’s exit was made even worse during the Robert/Miranda number. What was with all the tapping on the soundtrack? I couldn’t help but think that might’ve been a good time to insert some TAPPING into the choreography besides the three seconds we got from Miranda. But wait…oh yeah the one person who could’ve handled it got canned last week. I’m actually not even much of a tap fan, but Nick made me want to give it a chance.

      • mike

Bantha – that’s what really made me first take notice of Nick. I’ve always appreciated the skill it takes to tap, but never actually enjoyed tap – until Nick. They he performed, the way he moved, the way he told a story with tap made me appreciate AND enjoy tap. Then, I noticed he actually was dancing great in the group numbers, and the Quickstep – I don’t know how technically correct it was, but I think he handled it just fine.

      • Anne

Totally agree about the travesty that was Nick’s elimination haunting the rest of the season. Honestly, it was hard to enjoy the show tonight as a result.

    • Eric

Enough with the conspiracy theories. If the producers really wanted to push Ryan to the top, why did they cut her out of the show last season?

      • mike

Because every season, people are cast not just for talent, but stories and personality. When casting or selecting their top 20, they are looking at what pieces they have to tell a story with – this year, I believe Ryan is a story they want to tell. We’ve seen it before, judges can protect dancers to keep a story going – but only for so long. Right now, I think they are still trying to get America to love Ryan and see in her what they do.

    • Cate

I was too distracted by her black diaper to pay attention to the dance.

  • David

Lots of good performances this week, but Melanie and Marko were my faves again. Third week running. Spectacular.

    • Eric

Agree. I think I liked this hip hop piece even more than the statue piece. And no couple comes even close so far – but then again, no couple this season has any chemistry (besides Melanie and Marko.) Lot’s of likable dancers, but no spark. It will be interesting to see what happens with the top 10.

    • Data’m

Blah – that was squishy not sharp like hip hop should be

      • David

It was lyrical hip hop, not straight hip hop. I think that makes a difference.

  • Tia

In keeping with the conspiracy theories; because Mia was judging last season and there would have been a conflict of interest. (It’s rumored Rayan worked with her).

    • Nicole

Its not really a rumour, at least not in he dance world. Ryan was a demonstrator for Mia on the convention circuit if I remember correctly. It’s like when Debbie couldn’t judge when her student was on the show. That being said, there are so few dancers working, that fir he mostpart you are bound to have worked or taken class with someone… It’s just different when you’ve worked so closely with someone.

      • Maggie

if you look back far enough, ryan is seen in clips as far back as season 4, during Katee and Twitch’s “Mercy” and Twitch and Kherington’s dance on the bed. Season 4 was 2008 I believe, which would have made Ryan 15!! So she’s definitely been around SYTYCD a while. and you’re right about Debbie Allen, that was in Season 4 as well, Will Wingfield was one of her students.

    • Lyndsey

“Rumor”??!! They showed clips of her helping Mia teach the season 6 dancers her routines!!
I think Ryan is an excellent technical dancer but she completely lacks the ability to embody the character of the dance. I’d be fine losing her this week but all these conspiracy theories over a TV show are just ridiculous!! I don’t blame the judges for saving dancers they think are the best but if she continues to wind up in the bottom that will be the end. Same thing happened with ballroom dancer Karen in season 6. She was great & they loved her but after landing in. The bottom for 2 or 3 weeks straight they let her go because they said it was obvious she wasn’t going to get votes. If the same happens with Ryan she’ll be gone too!

  • Andrea

three words: MARKO AND MELANIE. ok, one more word: PERFECTION.
