Rebooted 'Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark' still climbing the box office despite bad reviews

A $75 million dollar budget and $1.2 million in weekly operating costs are difficult to atone for, but Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark is doing its best. The show — which officially opened with a retooled version on June 14 — played to 100 percent capacity last week despite earning harsh to middling reviews (overall verdict: what used to be a wild mess, is now a dull less-of-a mess).  And it made bank, taking in $1.7 million — the musical’s best weekly gross since its first seven days of previews back in January, when it earned $1.8 million — which marked a 41 percent increase from the previous week. In fact, the show has been on a constant financial inclined since the beginning of June.

So, is this all good? Not really. Spider-Man‘s producers recently admitted to The New York Times that the show would need to run for nearly seven years to recoup its investors’ cash. That’s one year longer than the Broadway tenure of the much-loved The Producers and Avenue Q (which both ran for six years), but still a lot shorter than the longest running Broadway musical of all time, The Phantom of the Opera (23 years).

Is that 7 years at 1.7 mill a week? Is that just to break even?

At that rate, you’re making $500,000 in profit each week, which means it would take 150 weeks (or about three years) in order to break even. But they’re probably not going to be playing to sell-out crowds for that long, so.

The producers aren’t admitting what the real plans for the show are though…they just nees this Spiderman show to have a good 1 to 2 year run and then there are plans to take the show global (places like Japan, etc.)where the investors will make their money back tenfold.
I saw the show a month ago and thought it was pretty good above all else I was really impressed with the music…I now understand why the music was panned by Broadway critics. The music is not Broadway theater music…it is mostly dark minor chord music that is beautiful in melody but is not the song and dance campy showtune music that you see in almost every Broadway production…it is a rock as a result all the Broadway theater critics wh oaren’t used to that type of music dismissed it…the problem for the critics is just because they dismissed the show doesn’t mean it’s bad, ultimately the people decide and it looks like they are starting to do just that.

So I travelled 2400 miles twice to see “Spider-man Turn Off The Dark” 4 times because it was lame? Sorry, this is where I draw the line. I dare anyone who has any additional negative comment about “Spider-man” to get hooked onto the flying harness, and see how many hours of practice it takes to make yourself not look like a total fool. New York is the pinnacle of The Arts in America today, not what the critics think. Professionally, Super Laundry Bag (Super Hero For The Arts).
