I definitely feel S8 was more Jurassic Park and less Cloverfield. I loved the idea of Cloverfield, but the amateur shaky cam ruined the movie for me.

S8 is basically the perfect movie. It somehow achieves being everything without sacrificing story or heart. JJ and Steve were nit playing this fast or loose. Every second of S8 is deliberate and effective on its

      intentions.

Not instead of nit. Stupid smart phone. See–they aren’t so smart are they?

And in instead of on. Can’t I just delete this mess?

=)) See, that’s me too! Brilliant concept and execution except the shaky cam. I have contacts that told me the same thing. My Mom actually got nauseous after the film at all the shakiness. Its not right. At least Star Trek wasn’t that bad but then it had its own problems. Like the fact that the whole crew and everything are from an alternate universe from the one we know and the one we know is only established by same character names. That’s a real shrewd technical detail and to most people might feel like a ripoff. Its at this point in an episode of The Big Bang Theory that Howard might chuckle to himself but nobody else appears impressed. To which Leonard might ask funny like being placed in a torture rack? or Raj then mentioning paper cuts and lemon juice as a combination. No bazinga. I haven’t seen this movie so I will try and reserve judgment but just knowing personality types having grown up in the suburbs it sounds almost like filming this was a real-life episode of the web series yacht rock and the music for this episode would be Misunderstanding by Genesis.

I expected more, but it was a fun movie, nonetheless. E.T. meets Jaws meets Alien. The movie was at its best before we saw the menacing figure’s face. They should have left it to our imagination. And Abrams is great at premises and build-up, but he sure does love a cheesy ending (see LOST).

It was a disappointment. Nothing original; just a bunch of scenes from better movies.

just saw it, best movie this year so far, x men first class coming in at second

Loved the movie. It could easily become one of my favorite, maybe even my absolute favorite, movie come the end of the year. I’d also add a dash of District 9 and Close Encounters of a Third Kind to that formula.

  • Caroline

Also a bit of The Iron Giant?

  • Altricaj

This whole formula needs to be squared by Close Encounters of the Third Kind. I don’t want to give spoilers, but there were whole scenes, direct shots, and plots points taken right from that movie. Also the kids seemed like they were directed to act as if they were in Goonies.

Was I the only one to note the similarities to Boy Who Could Fly?

It is very easy and lazy journalism to refer to this film in terms of copycat or plagurism. What J J has created is a homage to the great movies of an era and in paying homage to Spielburg (with his consent) what he has created is a great and entertaining film. The more arty amongst us may refer to movies in terms of art and meaning but lets not forget that what they are first and foremost is entertainment. Does Super 8 entertain? Yes it does

Great article. I can¡¯t wait to hear more about your research tool. If it is as good as your other products, then you will have another winner. Your article pretty much summed up what I have been seeing too. Great to see some hard data.
