PopWatch Confessional: Did you put a line from a song or movie in your yearbook?

After you take a minute to absorb the news that Dakota Fanning has just graduated from high school (I’ll wait… ) let’s recall something from our own glory days, shall we, PopWatchers? Though most of us can’t boast a Hollywood actress in our class, we’ve all gone one thing that, for better or worse, will forever remind us about those trying four years: the yearbook.

Sure, high school photos are the most unintentionally hilarious and horrifying aspect of a yearbook (they’ve devoted entire websites to it, after all), but I’m personally a fan of reading what people chose as their personal quote. A high school yearbook quote can say a lot about a person, whether they were a joker, a rebel, a thinker, a dreamer, an activist, or just really into Dave Matthews. I certainly was — I chose a Dave Matthews lyric from the song “#41″ (“I’m only this far and only tomorrow leads my way”) as my high school yearbook quote.

I know I can’t be the only one who opted to sum up their high school experience not with the words of historical figures or with a shout-out to loved ones, but instead with a song lyric or a line from a movie, TV show, or book. So time to confess, PopWatchers: Did you put a pop culture line or reference as your high school yearbook quote? Is yours an inspiring line from Lean On Me or your favorite Vonnegut quote? Or are you forever living in shame from picking a Hoobastank lyric? Let us know in the comments section below… and don’t forget to sign our yearbook later! HAGS!

That was such a childish comment, but I must admit I laughed so hard at it.

Aly! #41 is my all-time favorite song. What part of the lyrics did you pick?

I also just graduated from high school! My quote is from a movie i watched for the first time the night before we had to turn in our quotes. “No matter what anyone tells you, words and ideas can change the world.” -Dead Poets’ Society. So. Good.

    • Jackie

Really? When did anyone ever tell you words and ideas cannot change the world?

    My yearbook quote:

“I laugh in the face of danger… then I hide until it goes away.” -Xander Harris

I thought it was funny but also oddly poignant re: my entire worldview.

  • Skellington

Arcade Fire- Wake Up!!! “our bodies get bigger, but our hearts get torn up” i just watched dead poets society too. 5 months too late.

We weren’t allowed to put in quotes…lame. But mine would’ve been, “I fully intend to break for animals.”

    • Meredith

We weren’t allowed quotes either! It’s probably for the best though, because I’m sure I would have ended up quoting the theme song from “Roswell.”

    • Angela

My high school doesn’t use quotes either; in fact, the entire yearbook was awful (typos everywhere, and why on Earth would you make the signature pages black?). But if I could, I know I would’ve chosen a movie or book quote, maybe “The only thing that makes all the emptiness bearable is love” from Contact or “Happiness only real when shared” from Into the Wild. “See you in another life, brotha” from Lost would’ve been good too, and those are just the first ones I thought of.

This is the way the world ends
Not with a bang but a whimper.

“I have a dream, too, but it’s about singing & dancing and making people happy. It’s the kind of dream that gets better the more people you share it with. And I found a whole group of friends who have the same dream. That makes us sort of like a family” – The Muppet Movie

    • Leah

      I used that one too!!!!!

My best friend wrote Community quotes in mine and his senior quote was from Arrested Development.

  • Kaiulani

Dream On…Aerosmith. It was 1985, afterall.
