A kiss is just a kiss. Except for when it’s vying for bragging rights to the greatest kiss in the history of movies.
Last night on the red carpet of the MTV Movie Awards, we asked some of the stars in attendance what their all-time favorite film kiss is. And while some cited the 2011 Best Kiss nominees — like Nicki Minaj who told EW, “The one in Black Swan is pretty darn hot between Mila [Kunis] and Natalie [Portman]” — more went by the way of classics. (To see what some of your favorite celebrities selected, click here.)
But, PopWatchers, we want to know what you think is the all-time best movie kiss. Much to my horror/surprise, I found myself agreeing with the one celeb who has been part of some, er, interesting, kissing of her own lately, Selena Gomez. I, like the 18-year-old singer/actress swooned (this is pretty much where our similarities begin and end) over the hot and heavy, years-in-the-making kiss in the rain between Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams in The Notebook. While I think the movie as a whole is rather mediocre, I will watch that yowza of a smooch every single time it’s on cable (thanks, Oxygen!) because, as far as sexy, romantic (“It wasn’t over. It still isn’t over!”), Ryan Gosling-y kisses go, that one is pretty impossible to trump.
But, I know you’ve all got some great and worthy picks out there, too. Is it the urgent kiss between Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal in Brokeback Mountain that tugs at your heart, or do you get swept up with Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh in Gone With The Wind? Do you get revved up by watching Naomi Watts and Laura Harring in Mulholland Dr.? Or, like as it so often is at the MTV Movie Awards themselves, will it be Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart in Twilight who stand the test of time as the greatest movie kiss ever? Pucker up and us know in the comments section below!

Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger – Brokeback Mountain.
Your face + my ass
But you ARE an ass, Timberman!
Two men kissing is hot!
That kiss was pretty hot but also very touching, in a way. Seeing Heath’s character, such a stoic man, so excited to see Jake’s character by pulling him into a kiss was so real and passionate.
How about the kiss in the boathouse at the end of Maurice between Maurice and Alec? It’s passionate but also quite tender.
It also might stand out simply because I was so shocked that there was actually a happy ending. I was totally emotionally prepared for it to be downer. This was the only instance where I’ve actually cried happy tears at the end of a movie.
The Princess Bride: Cary Elwes and Robin Wright
Yep that kiss in Brokeback Mountain was bueatiful.
The upside-down Spider-Man kiss between Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst is pretty iconic and memorable.
I automatically thought of that one too. I’ve never kissed anyone upside down before, but the most memorable kiss I’ve ever had was in the rain like that one.
This is what I automatically thought of. It was hot, steamy, and completely original!
Ron and Hermione kiss in DH:P2– I hold out hope that it will be EXPLOSIVE.
When the Republican party kisses Rush Limbaugh’s rump, love is in the air each time.
No sense of history here…..From Here to Eternity is, BY FAR, the greatest movie kiss ever.
Even recent history, I’d go upside down Spiderman kiss, like Lea mentioned above….so iconic, they re-did it in an O.C. episode!
Spiderman! That one was in the rain too if I remember correctly.
Notorious – iconic, clever, and gorgeous.
And cleverly evasive of the “code”, too. A directing masterpiece.
Gotta go with the Notebook too.
As much as I hate to say it, the scene in Mr. and Mrs. Smith where they kiss in the hotel room and he drops the coffee cup is HOTTTTT.
Come on! The first “Bridget Jones” w/Colin Firth and Renee Zellwegger out in the snow. Renee Zellweller/Bridger: “Wait a minute – nice guys don’t kiss like that.” Colin/Mark Darcy: “Oh yes, they *!@#$ do!”
Love it!
Ditto to the Bridget kiss. Gives me butterflies! And then he wraps his coat around her!
Yeah, that’s pretty fabulous
Yep – I’m with you!
love that kiss too but i gotta go with james mcavoy in penelope or atonemet…MAN CAN THAT MAN KISS
HOLY CRAP, YES! When he kisses Penelope, and he sort of moans “I love you” while he’s still kissing her…oh my god, it was amazing and sooooooo romantic.
And in Atonement…no words, it was just hothothot. I love James McAvoy.
OMG Yes- This!!!! Loved him since.
The Whole Wide World, Vincent D’onofrio and Renee Zellweger
Oh good God yes to this one!
I was going to say this one too. It’s hot!
Can I go with Beauty and the Beast here? When I was little, I shouted “He’s gonna kiss her!” and I still think it’s one of the sweetest moments ever.
Good one! That really is a great screen kiss. I’d also add BBC’s North and South to the list of great kisses. It may be a tv mini-series but that kiss at the end is enough to the most cynical viewer goosebumps.
OHMYGOD YES!! The kiss is north and south is beautiful- always makes me tear up
!
Seconding the North & South kiss. Goodness gracious is that one great.
Yes! I love that scene! The way Mr. Thorton gently cradles Margarets face and the way he looks at her! OMG its sexy! I love Richard Armitage!
Gone with the Wind
Ditto…Clark Gable enveloped Vivian Leigh in that kiss!
Yeah, that was a whole sex scene in a kiss.
No sh!t, Sherlock! This and Casablanca and some of the older movies are ridiculously overlooked nowadays! This article is so outdated considering ABC had a list of this on that movie special it did earlier in the year.
Definitely Clark and Vivien’s kiss (or kisses) for me. I love Rhett’s arrogance about Scarlett needing a good kiss and him being the right man to deliver it.
Toto and Elena’s first kiss and their kiss in the rain in Cinema Paradiso.
wow, that is a tough call. SO many great ones. I am gonna go with The Notebook kiss too. It made the whole movie
Han and Leia – Empire Strikes Back
John Book and Rachel – Witness
(Who loves Harrison Ford?)
How can you call The Notebook a mediocre movie? Seriously one of the greatest love stories ever told!
I’d say mediocre is being generous. Nicholas Sparks is the worst kind of hack.
The book was awful, but I think it is one of the very few exceptions where the movie was much better than the book.
