Shia LaBeouf says Megan Fox had too much 'Spice Girl strength' to work well with Michael Bay

As we get closer to the June 29 opening of Michael Bay’s Transformers: Dark of the Moon, it’s only natural for people to ask Shia LaBeouf how filming the third film with Victoria’s Secret model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley differed from the first two films with Megan Fox. Especially now that LaBeouf has given such an interesting answer. He tells the LA Times‘ Hero Complex:

Megan developed this Spice Girl strength, this woman-empowerment [stuff] that made her feel awkward about her involvement with Michael, who some people think is a very lascivious filmmaker, the way he films women. Mike films women in a way that appeals to a 16-year-old sexuality. It’s summer. It’s Michael’s style. And I think [Fox] never got comfortable with it. This is a girl who was taken from complete obscurity and placed in a sex-driven role in front of the whole world and told she was the sexiest woman in America. And she had a hard time accepting it. When Mike would ask her to do specific things, there was no time for fluffy talk. We’re on the run. And the one thing Mike lacks is tact. There’s no time for [LaBeouf assumes a gentle voice] ‘I would like you to just arch your back 70 degrees.’”

Fox and Bay have yet to respond to EW’s request for comment on LaBeouf’s analysis of their working relationship, but it sounds plausible. I imagine the short-on-time version of that particular direction could sound brash to an actress who doesn’t realize Bay’s films are purely aesthetic. Whereas a model who’s used to her body being the focus of attention would go with it.

Also, can we discuss LaBeouf’s use of “Spice Girl strength”… Isn’t it amazing/sad that they are still our go-to pop culture reference for female empowerment (even if you do find yourself wondering whether the person saying it actually takes you seriously)?

“told she was the sexiest woman in America” is code for “you’re not in these movies for talent, now bend over the hood of this car”

Fox knew she wasn’t cast for her amazing acting talents, and it seemed as if she was very comfortable being the sex kitten, even for EW she was willing to flash her twin sets of tupperware.

    • KEVIN

just because someone goes along with something doesn’t mean they don’t resent it

  • KC

    Where is her career now?

    • hannibal

      Next to yours.

  • UGH

Sadly, the best acting she’s ever done is in that Eminem video where she has no dialog.

    • Woot

Good acting doesn’t always require dialogue. Holly Hunter and Marlee Matlin both won oscars for non speaking roles. I know you were making a joke, but just sayin.

Your story was really informative, takhns!

“Bay’s films are purely aesthetic.” REALLY?!?!?! THEY ARE?!?!?!

this only makes Fox look better out of the whole situation, and now Lebeouf will probably be fired for sticking up for her.

    • ST

I highly doubt he’ll be fired. He wasn’t trashing Bay, just pointing out the differences between Bay and Fox. Honestly, I think Megan will regret not doing this film. It’s not as if she’s done great films (yet) and this would have been a nice paycheck until she found a project that suited her.

Actually I’m still trying to figure out if Shia has any acting talent either. He seems to be a lot like Micheal Cera and a whole host of other male actors that are always the exact same in every movie they do.

    • whatevs

I think he’s a lucky guy. I’m not keen on his acting ability.

    • Esox

Yeah kinda like John Wayne was.

    • KEVIN

there are probably countless actors out there who can play anything, but have the appeal of a head of cabbage. Shia may not shown any range at this point, but he has an “it” factor and that is why he is successful. Appeal is almost more important than ability.

He is a really good actor. Check out Eagle Eye (In my opinion a great movie), Disturbia, The Greatest Game Ever Played, My Brother’s Keeper. He’s been around a LONG time. To sum up what he said about Megan Fox-Transformers made her a sex symbol so she became type cast and wasn’t offered any serious roles. Angelina Jolie cemented herself as a true actress with movies like Gia, Girl Interrupted and THEN she did the sexpot stuff-Lara Croft etc.

Shia used to do a comedy series for the Disney Channel and I’d love to see him return to the comedy field at some point. He seemed to have a good sense of timing. His choice of drama work tends to be hit-or-miss.

The fact is Michael Bay sucks as a director, Megan Fox sucks as an actress, and Shia LaBeouf ruins everything he touches (Indiana Jones, Wall Street 2, I Robot). The trio of Sugar Honey Ice Tea.

    • Momo

Glad I’m not the only one that cannot stand Shia LaBeouf & his so-called talent….

    • Dave

      I hate Shia LaDouche.

    • Dani

The first Wall Street sucked. So why are you surprised that the second one wasn’t? (Although, I personally enjoyed it and that Shia LaBeouf did an excellent job)

    • mike

that actually has more to do with the director/script rather than the actor so you just sound irrational. The actor just signs on.

I’m actually on the side of Megan Fox. She is beautiful. No question about it, but she actually has some talent. Just watch her guest stint on Saturday Night Live. It was hilarious. The woman can act. Honestly she gets a bad rap. Here is a girl who is not shaving her head, doing drugs, running over people with her cars, or revealing her carpet out in public. She stays out of all of that garbage and I think she’s the fortunate one in this situation. She no longer has to star in one of the worst movie franchises in film history.

I love to watch blockbuster films. I go to everyone one of them…until Transformers came along. After seeing the first one, I don’t think I have ever seen such junk on a screen. What some call special effects, I call a mess. I can not decipher who is fighting who. The robots are ugly and carry no attraction like say C-3PO or R2D2. There’s nothing cute or cool about any of them. The storys are not a factor because there is no story.

Transformers is garbage to the umpteenth degree and I know I will save my 10 bucks for something that is much more worthy.

    • Cj

I think the best thing she could do is do some independent films.

  • Boobs

Megan is a POA but she has attitude. She has not other films and is losing out on a huge paycheck. Not like she was a great actor to begin with to stand up for her principles…

  • hollywood

I’m sure it had nothing to do with a letter on Michael Bay website that said if Bay is too tough, p0rn may be option for you…talk about sexual harassment in the industry….prime example….and Michael Bay gets a promotion from Paramount for it…..hahah

  • Cj

Michael Bay is a director that to him time is money and he wants stuff done and he wants it done quickly. He’s like that bootcamp Sgt Emery dude that’s what everybody says.
Shia is a really good actor. Check out Eagle Eye (In my opinion a great movie), Disturbia, The Greatest Game Ever Played, Tru Confessions. He’s been around a LONG time. To sum up what he said about Megan Fox-Transformers made her a sex symbol so she became typecast (which happens to many good looking actresses) and wasn’t offered any serious roles. Angelina Jolie cemented herself as a true actress with movies like Gia, Girl Interrupted and THEN she did the sexpot stuff-Lara Croft etc

  • Lalala

I don’t agree with any of you…if they are such “horrible actors” no director no director would hire them, alllllll just haters and jealous.

  • juvenile

The 16 year old boys are out in full force commenting on this article.

  • GeeMoney

She messed up by criticizing Michael Bay, and I think Shia is just trying to stand up for her a little bit. Maybe he thinks that if he says something nice, someone will contact her about a movie role, lol. Who knows.
