'America's Got Talent': Where are you, Prince Poppycock?

Last season, PopWatch had a tiny love affair with a man named Poppycock. But ever since Michael Grimm dashed our big hopes for Gentleman Gaga, we’ve lost touch. So we launched a PopWatch Investigation (which was less work than a 48 Hours investigation, but more interesting than Crime Scene Investigation).

In my mind, I imagined Poppycock turning out his operatic tunes from the dark corner of a romantic, 18th century-style mansion in France, armed with an endless supply of hand-painted vases ripe for the tipping. Turns out I was a bit off. At least, that’s according to a video he posted on his YouTube account in April, which follow Poppycock’s adventures in Venice, where he traveled to perform in Il Ballo del Doge, a high-profile Venetian masquerade ball.

Additionally, Poppycock (real name John Andrew Quayle) been a vocal supporter of the LGBT community, performing last month at the annual fundraising talent show Rise Up and Shout: Voices Of The Next Generation in Hollywood.

While all notable accomplishments, is anyone else surprised we haven’t heard more from the performer once dubbed by Sharon Osbourne “the male Lady Gaga.” Is it time for a resurgence? Or has your interest faded, PopWatchers?

Not surprised at all. He didn’t fit into mainstream and was too over the top. He did have talent but it was overshadowed by all the flamboyance of the costumes, wigs and makeup.

Too bad you can’t see that “the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.” Besides, who wants to fit into the “mainstream.” That’s where talent goes to be washed out to sea.

Kalar … you go gurl !!

    • FromChicago

Not surprised. But that applies to 90% of these reality contestant winners. Think about the AI finalists who don’t have much going….XFactor UK….the names and lists of TV shows go on and on. Actually I’ve forgotten all the winners of AGT since its inception. What are they doing anyway?

      • Lil Jo

The first winner, Terry Fator, has a MULTI MILLION dollar/ multi year contract headlining at Mirage Casino in Vegas. I guess that’s nothing!

      • Mitch

And last year’s winner, Michael Grimm, just released his first post-AGT CD. Plus runner-up Jackie Evancho’s first CD went platinum last year (over 1 million copies). And she’s only 10!

      • JulieB

@LilJo, Terry Fator was not the first winner. That was a 12 year old named Bianca Ryan (who?) Terry Fator was the only one of the 5 winners to be successful.

      • Simon

It’s a little early to say that Michael Grimm won’t be successful. His CD just came out last week, and debuted at #13 on the Billboard Hot 200. Not bad, I’d say.

No, I do not think so, as he has been performing at a quite a lot of Broadways and concerts, lately.

      • Pastel

I love watching him. I love his costumes. I love his ability to be comfortable in his own skin. I miss him and hope he can be accepted

  • Kalar Walters

Are you kidding?? Faded interest? Not a chance!! Been following him since his audition. He has all sorts of “irons in the fire.” Stay tuned!!!

  • Suzanne

I am surprised that he isn’t headlining in Vegas, because he more than any other contestant was PERFECT for Vegas; and his talent was stellar! I know he’s got upcoming gigs, but I want to see him in a venue deserving of his talent! He is second to none…and as far as mainstream???? Give me a break-who wants any more mainstream performers. If you’re so desperate for white toast, go see Donnie & Marie!

    • Kalar Walters

      You tell ‘em, Suzanne!

    • Otis

I thought he would be a Vegas headliner filling a flamboyance void from the death of Liberace.

      • MysterWright

He ought to have his own show online that keeps people posted on his latest adventures. Like Ozzy has for his current tour giving people a news update at every venue. I’m sure plenty of people would tune in. Especially considering that his audience can afford cable and would probably die to see him have an HBO special like Bette Midler.

      • Pastel

I agree. We need more Poppycock!! Haha.

    • heartnsf

I agree! Was in Vegas last month and was LOOKING to see if Prince P was playing anywhere. WHY HE ISN’T HEADLINING IS BEYOND BELIEF! He has such talent!

      • Marti

I adored him. His gorgeous voice, his flair, his costumes and showmanship. I would love to see him perform.

    • Satori03

  • Paige

Faded interest? No way!! I’m a huge fan, been a fan since I saw him in his audition. He is amazing. <3

  • r

I would definitely go see him in Vegas.

You really need to interview HIM and ask him why he is not in the public eye… you may be surprised at the answer! And if he has faded, why has his fan page on Facebook consistently grown, now at 78K, when Mr. Grims languishes at 57K?? I urge you to discover the truth behind his story!

    • Sandie

p.s. He just launched a very successful Kickstarter campaign to finance his new solo record and video… winning twice the budget he had asked for. That certainly says something!!

      • Kalar Walters

        YAY, Sandie!!!!! It certainly does!!

    • Janice

      True THAT Sandie !!

  • melissa

i voted for him evey week, and i was MAD when he came in 4th!!

and he was much better than mr. grimm!

  • crispy

He’s performing at Chicago Market Days Festival later this summer (I had to tell my friend who he is) and I would suspect at other Pride festivals around the country.

  • Mark

I think of Jackie Evancho when I think of that season of AGT.

  • Lois “Little Cobbler”

I think he’s a doll! Really! Love you PP, see you in Chicago, in August! xoxoxo Lois

  • taw

The guy had a great voice. We should see more of him.

  • Shirley Friend

His voice, his fashion, his integrity, his way of singing songs and making them his own are what makes this man a commitment to the music industry. Once someone finances his projects, you will see more of him. His fans are very loyal. I believe given the chance to make a CD all and more fans would buy.

  • Brittany

Faded interest?! I like him more and more as time goes on!

  • cam

gaga’s songs are good without all the visual flairs. are his? (I really don’t know.)

I’m excited for Jackie Evancho’s career tho. She has a PBS great performances special airing June 4-6 and her CD comes out June 14th. In the framing of AGT she sometimes came across as gimick-y (little girl with big voice!) but out of that setting, she really is resplendent and transcendent.

  • Pam Henning

John Quale deserves a Broadway or Vegas show; he does it all: singing, acting, writing, composing. It cannot be, can it, that in this day & age there’s still prejudice against those of us who are out?
