Lee DeWyze and Nigel Lythgoe snipe online over 'Idol' finale

While Scotty McCreery was crowned the new American Idol Wednesday night, last year’s champion, Lee DeWyze, seemed lost in the background of the Nokia Theatre. His fans vented online, but the show’s executive producer Nigel Lythgoe explained on Twitter that DeWyze himself had declined a more prominent role. “I was so upset Lee DeWyze wouldn’t present the winners trophy to Scotty,” he wrote. “Especially as he’d been on the show this Season. I guess he was shy.”

But DeWyze objected online, claiming that he wasn’t really asked to be part of the finale, writing, “Just for the record… I was not asked to be involved in the Finale. It wasn’t until about 2 minutes before they announced that Nigel had approached me and asked if he could “borrow” me for a second. I didnt feel a last second jump on stage was appropriate. It was Scotty’s moment.I appreciate American Idol, and the opportunity it has given me. And the people who have made that show possible. I am not angry, or bitter etc. It was an amazing Finale, and I would have loved to be a part of it. I just wasnt asked.”

Did Lythgoe take DeWyze involvement for granted? Or is this a case where DeWyze was actually asked, but as such an afterthought that the singer’s pride prevented him from accepting? Who do you think is to blame for the crossed wires and hurt feelings?

This is easy enuf to figure. How was this handled for all the previous winners? Were they all asked last minute? I don’t think so. Presumably, if they wanted him there they would’ve flat out asked him, so he’d have time to rehearse, etc. Boy did he glare at the camera tho’…

    • somet

      Who is Lee DeWyze?

      • Tina

        Exactly…lol

      • The results are in…

Either Lee was asked to be on the show, or he was not. I’m betting he was not.

      • sharona

somet, why are you even on this board if you have to ask questions about the show? Just sayin’.

      • Christy

sharona – I believe somet was being sarcastic.

      • Turbo

Exactly. Who is he? Oh, now i remember, he’s that guy who idol last year. I can recall that he was a nice guy, humble and easy to root for but average in talent. When you have winners like Carrie Underwood, you really need to root for the best singers, he clearly was not and so no pathos here, he had his light in the sun…

      • hustler

        that’s not the point

      • Gee

You can’t hate Lee and love Scotty at the same time. They’re both PRODUCTS of hormonal teenage girls with unlimited talk and text plan

      • Ian

If Nigel didn’t want Lee DeWyze in the finale–fine. But at the very least he should’ve had him sing on Tue. nite instead of David Cook. AI is a sham.

        who ?

I thought it was spelled Leigh DeWise, and I thought it was a girl.

    • Doug

Lee was the 2nd worst Idol winner, right after that gray-haired mess from a few years ago. “His fans vented online…” Oh really? What did the 2 of them have to say?

      • Sandye

I was a Taylor fan, and Taylor has a musical and business career. He carved out a nice niche for himself. Who said Taylor had to be a pop star? He’s got very loyal fans. As I’ve said many times, Lee’s life is not over yet, and he probably got a bit screwed by Idol – they need to work it out, period. He deserves that.

      • Michelle

Lee has a lot more than two fans, and a heck of a lot more than you will ever have. It is amazing how often people think they have something to say, when in fact, they don’t have a clue what they are talking about. Lee has lots of fans, sadly, he has had trouble winning new fans since the RCA/Jive/Sony label was dropped from Idol right after Lee and Crystal were signed. As a result, neither one of them has gotten the support they need from their label. Please check your facts before you speak.

      • Gagaholic

Isn’t Scotty the #1 worst winner now? At least Taylor had range. Lee is still #2. Why we continue to watch this stupid show is totally beyond me.

      • Get Real

Scotty is the worst winner in the show’s 10-year history. He will probably have one big post-Idol hit and that will be it. Taylor Hicks’ indie CD is much better than his post-Idol one. If you like Blues Traveler or Kenny Wayne Shepherd, you should give Hicks a chance. As for DeWyze, I’m not a fan of his music, but he was last year’s winner & he should have been given a chance to perform. They had the time: Beyonce performed twice.

      • JJ

        I hate Nigel, but damn that’s funny!!!LMFAO

      • The results are in…

Do you have references for your “facts,” Michelle, or are you just going off the high that you got when Lee returned your text? That was a computer-generated response, you know.

      • Michelle’s mother

Lee was never guaranteed fame AND fortune. That’s what happens when you sign a contract with Satan and why you should ALWAYS. READ. THE. FINE. PRINT. I thought your daddy and I taught you better ‘n that, Michelle. You’ve disappointed us so and I never thought I would say this, but I wish we had had a son instead and that I had aborted you.

      • tarc

Lee’s one of the better Idols – at least he writes his own music. I liked what Hicks was doing as well. I guess you can’t judge quality by quantity (as usual).

      • Sigh

DO we really need to start comparing Idols? I love both Lee & Taylor. Just because they haven’t turned out to be the big pop stars the labels tried to make them to be doesn’t mean they lack talent. If sales equals talent then our music industry is more screwed than I thought it was.
Keep making music, Lee & Taylor, your fans will support you.

yer mom, Lee is the only Idol in 10 season not to be asked to perform on the Finale (Fantasia was asked, but had a prior engagement, so she was the only other Idol not to appear on the next season finale.) Nigel is a douchebag–I didn’t vote for Lee, but he is still season 9’s winner, and if they could have Taylor Hicks on a finale, they should have made room for Lee.

    • jannieschafer

At the end of the American Idol finale, I saw Ryan hand Scotty a “microphone-like” trophy. Scotty had to give the trophy to

James so he could hold the real microphone and sing. I’ve been watching Idol since day one of season one, and I don’t recall

ever seeing a past idol hand over a trophy to the new winner. I do, however, remember that the previous winners have ALWAYS

performed in the finale. Last year’s winner, Lee DeWyze, earned his right to be in it.

In my opinion, Nigel Lythgoe is trying to put Lee in a bad light, when in reality, Nigel is the one who is in the wrong here. It

looks like the media is taking the bait and reporting that Lee refused to participate. The truth is that Lee has been nothing but

gracious. He is not using his Twitter to bash Idol or Nigel. Nigel needs to grow up and take a lesson from Lee. Lee deserves a

very public apology from Nigel & AI!

To not invite him is just so wrong! They had plenty of time. Bono’s Spiderman thingy had no relevance to the show and should

have been left out. This is a prime-time show, and Gaga, J-Lo, and Beyonce’s performances weren’t fit for children to see or

hear! It has always been tradition to have the previous winner perfom. Instead, they stuck the reigning champ back in the 3rd

row, and then they didn’t even acknowledge his presence in the audience. Shame on you, Idol. Can’t wait for the X-Factor!

      • Jacki

Jannie, I agree with you one hundred percent. It’s tradition for the past winner to perform. The Spiderman thing completely sucked. And Lee should have performed. It’s not about comparing one Idol to another. It’s about what’s right. And Lee performing is what would have been right.

  • whatevs

I’d like to pick the third option of “why are there sides?”

    • Cameron Johnson

THANK YOU. Exactly. Boy, is this blown out of proportion. Misunderstanding between two perfectly nice people= feud to the death how exactly? And how does that translate to everyone crucifying DeWyze for his post Idol career not being exactly how they demand it? o.o

      • ???

Nigel, nice??? You parents must have put some kind of parental control on your tv and internet if you don’t see the crap coming out of Nigel’s mouth.

    • JJ

      Here’s the deal..
The fact of the matter is, IDOL DOESN’T OWE LEE ANYTHING!!!! It was pointless for Nigel to even make the remark. Nigel is an ass for starting that drama, but Lee’s fans are also wrong for claiming that Lee is entitled to have any role whatsoever in the finale.

      • Squishmar

And he did perform on the show a few weeks ago… did he really think they’d have him back again so soon? Although, so did David Cook, didn’t he? Hmmmm… He should have at least handed out the trophy to the winner…but it should have been arranged ahead of time.

      • geez

I have watched since season one and never knew they got a trophy. How embarrassing. I must be rushing to the bathroom or something.

      • geez

ok, I just asked everyone in the house, there are five of us, no one has seen a trophy.

      • Squishmar

@geez: Well, maybe that’s the *real* answer… Nigel asked him to present the trophy to Scotty, and Lee said, “Trophy? What trophy? I don’t remember getting any f*cking trophy!”

      • TopCatDC

Kris Allen was the first to receive the Microphone Trophy. I don’t recall seeing a trophy last year – and I was expecting one. I guess they just didn’t get it on stage.

  • Wicked

I think Nigel wrecked the season with his constantly trying to make lame “moments” happen. I also think he told the judges to only say positive things about the singers. Did you notice how many times the judges had to look down at the script when critiquing the performance. Everything was already written down.

    • DK

Did you ever pay attention to the judges DURING the performances? They were taking notes, and glancing at their notes, not scripts. I’m not saying the producers didn’t try to make the audience like some performers more than others (though not as aggressively as in recent seasons!), but I highly doubt the judges’ critiques were scripted.

      • Sherry

        ditto

    • chrispy

and some of the notes they take are from the dress rehearsal. the judges have said so during their critique, mostly in seasons past.

      • Mike

Exactly. Also, I’m sure the judges can hear the performances better in dress rehearsal; the live show is so chaotic and noisy.
That’s why it would be smart to take lots of notes from the dress rehearsals.

      • @Mike

Then what the heck is the POINT of having a dress rehersal if the real performance doesn’t count, if the judges have already mde up their mind about what they’re going to say.

      • just saying

the judges don’t choose the winner. the people that actually vote aren’t voting based on what the judges say. there’s no real point to the judges on this show after the initial picking in the first place. one thing i really despise about this show. oh but wait, you DO have people like Joy Behar who admitted she couldn’t tell who was a good singer unless the judges told her if they were “pitchy” or not. But IMO, tone deaf people shouldn’t be involved in picking the winner of a music contest anyways.

    • Joan

Oh, I saw the looking down but I thought it was their own notes that they had made during the performances.

  • Omi

The Idol Machine grinds up and smacks its lips at yet another.

  • KC

The Idol producers were probably too embarrassed to include DeWyze because of his lack of a career.

    • Chiefy

      Agree 100%

      • Mike

That’s probably true, but too bad for them. Cowell hated Kris Allen so much that he grimaced and refused to applaud when Allen was announced as the winner. Despite that, Allen was invited back to perform on the next season’s finale. All Idol winners will not draw Clarkson or Underwood numbers in sales. Still, they work hard and they win their titles fair and square. Lythgoe should have manned up and invited DeWyze to perform.

      • ???

You’re right about them winning, but there’s nothing fair about Idol’s voting system.

    • Becca

      Absolutely!

    • tarc

Considering that he had MORE of a career before Idol than half the Idols do in total, I don’t think so.

  • JN

    Lee who?

    • Yeah

Oh, you are so figgin’ creative! Wow! What a hilarious thing to say! We are all so impressed. Man, you are amazing!

      • Topper

@Yeah: You beat me to it.

      • MTX

@Yeah: LOL I see what you did there. Boy, that sure is classic. You totally went with the sarcasm route! Hilarious. You have to teach me your secret! I wish we could all come across as such epic douches like you.

      • El

Hey, everyone! MTX likes to use the word “douche.” It appears in all of his posts! Isn’t that awesome? WOW!

    • SaM

after ten times thats getting a little old

  • Ellen

Nigel has always seemed like a pompous ass to me, so I’m with Lee on this one.

    • Yo

And more stories are fed out of this show (TMZ, anyone) than out of a fiction farm. Of course it is as Lee says – and I am not a particular fan of his.

  • anonymous

Nigel was wrong but he thinks we are all morons anyway so what does he care.

  • Dave

DeWyze was with Kris Allen in Oblivion Land…soon to be joined by Lauren and Scotty. These boring “singers” are no Carrie Underwood, Daughtry, Adam Lambert, David Cook, Jennifer, or Kelly Clarkston. That was probably the first stage Lee had seen since the final last year and didn’t know what to do with it anyway. lol

    • Sandye

The very least Ryan could have done is introduce Lee when he was sitting in the audience and Lee was right in back of him!!! Very awkward moment on American Idol, and there are no excuses for Idol on this one. It was a deliberate sign of disrespect toward Lee. It is ridiculous that because an Idol hasn’t shot to superstardom in a year or 2, that they are has-beens. These contestants put their trust in Idol for their careers and reputation. The show disses their winners and constestants after the fact and that is actually defamation — and has hurt their careers. Some of these winners or finalists already had bands and followers and could have possibly made it on their own. This is one of the issues Idol has to look at closely and I and others will be writing and badgering until they do it. I think Nigel coming back has done very good things for the show. I think he is a good guy, however, he, like everyone makes mistakes, and with 100 top 10 finalists out there now, it would be good PR to show appreciate for those past Idols and work out — with the winners or top finalists, especially, whatever misunderstandings there have been. There may be reasons Lee’s career has not taken off – but I certainly will not write him off. I think he has been hurt by Idol and after all the fanfare and support – to be banished and written off in public is absolutely unacceptable. He was loved last year – by the show and by many people of all ages who voted. I clearly think there has been misunderstand, and I strongly hope that Lee can pick up the pieces, Idol will show him some respect and Lee can have the career he deserves. NO ONE who is on Idol (unless they have done something horrible) should be WORSE off for being on the show.
And as for the comment about Lauren and especially Scotty being has beens — give me a break. Scotty is a gift – talented, with character, wise beyond his years. He will be successful and he has alot of people watching out for him.

      • Veronika

Maybe Nigel knows ‘something’ that you and I don’t. Someone in AI got busted drinking and driving I read the cover of a mag but I didn’t buy it so I don’t know who. Was that him? Or maybe Lee is ‘putting’ the show down with his comments to the press, who knows. But this seems fishy to me.

      • school teacher

I think it is terrible to cut people down. Lauren and Scotty were 2 amazing young kids that were amazing talented. Just look at their ages compared to the others. Just think what they will be in a few years.

      • Carla in Houston

@Sandeye: you make some good points, but I disagree about Lee or other idols being “worse off” when the Idol machine is done with them. Most of them, Lee included, probably would not have had a shot in H-e-l-l at a recording career and the level of exposure they receive from Idol. I don’t think Lee is worse off – if he sinks into obscurity, then that’s where he would’ve been without Idol anyway. I think Idol is a stepping stone, a chance at the brass ring, not a guarantee of stardom, and anyone who tries out should know that by now. I say take the fame it gives you and try to make something out of it, just like all the other artists out there. There are other opportunities (broadway, acting, reality shows, etc.) that will come to someone like Lee (or Kris, or Tayler, etc.), even if he isn’t destined to sell a lot of CD’s.

      • x

Veronika – that was a guy from this year

      Emily,

I am always curious why people like you seem to revel in their ignorance, coming to boards they say they know nothing about and make inane comments like yours.

Would you care to share your motivation?

I know nothing whatever about football, but I don’t go to boards and declare my ignorance of the subject, and tell the world I spent all that time, signing up for a board, just to say I know nothing.

Please explain, I’m a psychology major and find people like you fascinating.

      • Tony

@linnet: Emily has too much time on her hands. As Jack pointed out, Emily is so totally cool, and so-totally-cool people with too much time on their hands tend to post stupid remarks on public forums about which they claim they have no interest. She may need an intervention.

      • linnet

        Thanks Tony,

I didn’t get to hang out with the so-totally-cool people in high school. ~laughs~

      • MTX

You must have a lot of free time on your hands mr ‘psychology major.’ So do tell, why do you have so much free time? Not employed with your “major”? Here’s a piece of advice- use your degree as tissue paper. You’ll get much more use out of it, you douche.

      • Andy

@MTX: “you douche” Really? Recess is over, little one. Go back to your 6th-grade studies class.

      • Stephen Hawking

@MTX Usually, if one is a psychology major, that indicates that one is still studying, and therefore would probably not be employed (at least not in the position they are still studying for).

    • SaM

      it’s me you idiot

  • Mike A

Nigel simply didn’t want the winner from America Idol’s worst season in history to be prominent. It is a new Idol after all.

    • Sandye

It’s not over yet, people. It’s been a year. An Idol doesn’t have to be a superstar in a year. Give me time, and don’t turn on him. He had many supporters last year. Many very successful artists have a bad first CD or even 2 before they shoot to the top. Lee may not be the aggressive person Adam is – and Adam got great attention right away – but that’s OK. They are each individuals. Kris Allen is doing some writing for other artists and Chris Sligh is busy with projects. THE RULE BOOK ON IDOL NEVER SAID THEY HAD TO BE A SUPERSTAR IN A YEAR. Show some respect, please. Show some support. Put yourself in Lee’s shoes, or Kris’ shoes – they don’t deserve to be written off in public. I repeat – Idol should not ruin a person’s career – it should enhance it. The producers and Idols need to work on their relationships and what they say to the public. There are some Idols whose talents and potential are stronger than the first CD they put out, with pressure from Idol PTB to pick the songs. Taylor, David A., possibly Lee (haven’t heard the CD) are set up for failure without good songs for their CD. Taylor made lemonade out of lemons, David A. hopefully is young enough to still get the career he deserves, and Kris and Lee are still new out of the gate. What is wrong with Idol watchers that they are throw doom on these Idols before they even have a chance? It’s mean, it’s uncalled for, it is irrational. Again, put yourself in THEIR place. Idol is a machine and it can mow you down. You have to be strong, but Idol PTB need to play fair, too.

      • Cami

I have to agree with Sandye. I realize Jennifer Hudson did not win, but it took her a good 1 1/2 to 2 years to even start to get where she is now. I also wonder, how many of you who are dogging Lee have actually listened to his music. He is good, really good. I listen to him everyday. My daughter is a huge fan and we are not the only ones. I am just saying, give the man a chance, listen to his album before you knock him down.

      • mark

if it wasn’t for dreamgirls, jennifer hudson would be another person who went through the idol machine. Idol gave her exposure, but it really isn’t the reason for her success.

      • GavinStrick

Sandye I appreciate your comments, but have to point out that Kris Allen has a platinum single under his belt, sold over 2xs as many albums as Lee and co-wrote Matt Morrison’s latest single. The top Idol winners are still Clarkson and Underwood, and if you chart the sales of the WINNERS records since 2001 they have steadly gone downward since CDS are not selling like they used to.

      • tom

um….love JHUD….but what song has been a commercial success except the weight watchers song….both of her albums have bombed!

  • UGH

I’m surprised the paint store let Lee have the night off to go.

    • Sandye

Low, Low Low. Do you sing? Did you ever have the world in your hands only, one year later, to be laughed out and mocked? Take a look at yourself in the mirror, I know you wouldn’t want to be in Lee’s place being talked about this way.

    • Dino

I’m surprised your boss lets you use the company computer to post on the EW board while you sit in your cube.

  • Dumbledore Fluffernutter

Wait- this headline is all wrong. It should read “Discovered: Lee Dewyze Has Fans”

    • djm

      I agree with this!

      • tickles

Hate to admit it but that is what popped into my mind. Why didn’t all these “fans” of Lee help him out by buying his record?

      • SaM

@ tickles that will happen to haley also

      • Squishmar

SaM: Why? Why’d you do it? We can’t have just *one* Idol-related board that doesn’t have Haley hate on it?

  • caius

I don’t blame Lee at all….they have probably tied him up in contracts and done nothing for his career…just like they seem to mismanage everyone else.

    • DiN

If they’ve mismanaged Carrie Underwood and David Cook, I’d love to get some of that!!

    • Sandye

Some people are easier to manage, easier to market, some Idols are ready to roll out of the gate with boatloads of fans – like Carrie and David, Chris D. Idols come in all shapes, sizes, and personalities and some have to work very hard after the show just to get credibility. It takes a TEAM effort on the part of the Idol and the PTB from Idol. Blake Lewis was one of the best ever to come out of Idol, but he’s just now getting back on the scene again. His first CD was brilliant. I don’t understand why some have it harder, but we should SUPPORT those who have it harder. Think what it is like, to go from nothing to having everything — and to have others picking your songs and telling you who you should be when you’re trying to figure it out yourself. And again, ALOT of it has to do with song choice, and the songs on the CD. Sometimes there is too much of a rush and the CD could have been better. The PTB have to take some responsibility for that. Every Idol is different, they are not Stepford Idols, come on. But their needs to be more respect and more loyalty, period. I am disgusted when an Idol, not because of their own doing, is bashed to pieces after being at the top of their game and trying their best. This formula needs to change.

      • JJ

I’m sure you’re a nice person but your logic is a little ridiculous. I’m not going to buy cds from an idol alumni just because just because they had it harder. Either I like their music or I don’t, and if I were to SUPPORT people who had a hard life, American Idol would be the last place I’d look.
