Back in January, Disney announced plans to release several of its titles on Blu-ray 3-D format, including The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, and The Nightmare Before Christmas. And today it was reported that a 3-D version of The Lion King — one of my top 5 movies of all time — will also be released in theaters this September. As someone who generally goes out of her way to find the 2-D version of 3-D movies in theaters, I have to say this news is quite exciting.
If there’s any movie I want brought to life in 3-D, it’s a movie as visually breathtaking as Lion King. But my second thought was: what the hell took so long?
Once 3-D started storming through theaters (whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing is an entirely different debate), naturally you’d want the highest grossing hand-drawn cartoon among your first adaptations, right? Apparently not. I mean, it’s taken this long. Hopefully that speaks to the quality of the 3-D Lion King and not someone’s gross oversight. We’ll see.
Nonetheless, I’m left wondering if there are any classic movies that haven’t been made into 3-D that would make me equally — and as surprisingly — excited. My vote? American Tale. And not because I necessarily wish to see 3-D mice. I live in New York, people — I get enough rodent action. But I think the “Somewhere Out There” moon scene would be even more wrenching in 3-D. And I’d have glasses on to block the tears. Double win!
Your turn. Is there a classic movie you think might be fun to see in 3-D? Jurassic Park? FernGully? (Don’t judge my hypothetical choices. They were simply the second and third options that popped into my head.)

The Last Dragon. I would love to see that last fight between Sho’nuff and Leroy in 3D.
ugh, this is a bad move – hollywood tried this with technicolor trying to add color to black and white movies and it failed horribly, the same will happen to movies not originally meant for 3D, I can’t wait for this dumb fad to be over

When do the 3D Star Wars movies get released?
I’d love to see the glow in 3D
Casablanca, Citizen Kane, Gone With the Wind, anything Fellini, the list goes on and on…
Casablanca, yes. But only the colorized version! :/
OMG “Sina” THATS TOO FUNNY “the last dragon” lol that movie is everything to me
Friday the 13th Part 3, with 3D that actually works.
Make it a double feature and also show Jaws 3D.
LOL@Ian! That was exactly my first thought. When they’re driving up to Camp Crystal Lake and the guy in the front seat passes something fun to the guy in the back and the scene near the end where Jason literally squeezes the eyeballs of his victim out of their socket and straight into the audience? Classic 3-D!
I was in my early teens when that second wave of 3D films started. Man, they were pretty bad and not just 3D-wise lol Remember those glasses that were red on one side and blue on the other? Good times, good times… (my Bill McNeil/Phil Hartman impression… great, now I’m gonna have the “Real Deal with Bill McNeil” jingle stuck in my head all day. Blerg!*)
*My Liz Lemon/Tina Fey impression
Deep Throat
If we’re going that route, then Debbis Does Dallas
I vote for the gay porn classic “Men In Black Men II: The Re-Entry”
I love this movie, but in 3D hmm. Its the highest grossing 2D animation film of all time but I don’t think the lion king needs to be 3D! Its beauitful how it is!!
I completely agree, they should not be messing with a classic, it is perfect just the way it is!
You guys who are so adamantly opposed to 3D conversions of films act like the original version will be destroyed – lost forever! – and all you’ll ever be able to see is the 3D version. Unless you’re living somewhere where the government is going to force you to watch 3D-converted movies, chill out.
Independance Day!
I like that idea!
I second that!
I think that Disney scrapped their plans to 3D-ize Beauty And The Beast. I’m curious whether they had a change of heart; is that back on?
It’s planned for Blu-Ray, but not for theaters at the moment.
It actually went to theaters in other countries like Australia and New Zealand I think and the response was positive.
I hope they don’t converyt any of the classic movies to 3D
Yes, Kathy, yes. 3D is useless and usually poorly done.
This stuff needs to stop. 3-D looks like crap, it’s overly expensive, and it’s totally pointless on a film that’s already existed for almost two decades without it.
we went and saw the 3D versions of Nightmare and Toy Story I & II just to see them in the theater – the 3D didn’t really add much to any of them except for a few scenes here and there.
I’m not a fan of 3-D, especially upconverted 3-D, but I would pay to see the Matrix in 3-D.
I don’t know if the Matrix can already be classified as a “classic” though.
ditto. Matrix (the first one)is the one that pop in my head
Finding Nemo
Dark City, Labyrinth, Blade Runner, The Crow, The Incredibles [well, actually, everything Pixar's done - except the toy Story trilogy, which has been done].
Back to the Future, hello!
