Last week, the geniuses at Taiwan’s Next Media Animation speculated that the Governator’s fondness for “groping” may have been behind Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver’s split. As it turns out, they weren’t too far off base — Schwarzenegger revealed today that he fathered a child with a member of his household’s staff 10 years ago. LIFE.com is taking his confession as an opportunity to revisit previous incidents of celebrity infidelity in a 29-slide gallery called “Cheating Scandals of the Stars.” We begin with Arnold before moving on to the likes of Jesse James, Tiger Woods, Jude Law, LeAnn Rimes and Eddie Cibrian — both of whom were married when they began seeing each other — and Elizabeth Taylor, whose escapades were too numerous to be confined to just one slide.
Which of these scandals shocked you the most when you first learned about it? Though it’s the newest one on the list, personally, I’d have to go with Schrivernegger. Over the years, so many articles had been written about the couple’s rock-solid, odd-couple marriage that I thought they’d be together forever. Ryan Phillippe and Reese Witherspoon would be a close second; I’d been rooting for those crazy kids since the days of Cruel Intentions. What say you, PopScandalWatchers?

If the question is which of those mentioned, or any others I can think of, are the most insane and disgusting, I vote Arnold. Sleeps with a household employee, fathers a child, keeps the woman in his employ IN THE SAME HOUSE WITH HIS WIFE AND other CHILDREN, and then tells her 10YRS down the line! It doesn’t get any sicker than that. My heart just breaks for those kids!

Hell, I’m surprised that ABC hasn’t already pitched a “Divorced Celebs Find New True Love” version of “The Bachelor.”

I give her more fault b/c she has a history of going after men in relationships. I’ve still never watched Mr. & Mrs. Smith. It just feels wrong to watch as people started an affair that broke a marriage.

Sorry folks…have to agree with Stacey. As an outsider looking in (aren’t we all?) I think Brad Pitt wanted children and Jennifer, for whatever reason, didn’t at that time in her life. Nothing against her but they just weren’t on the same page. From things I have read I think he fell in love with the idea of being a dad (by playing and hanging out with Maddox) and that eventually turned into a relationship with Maddox’s mom. To me they seem like a happy couple…at least I hope they are with 6 kids now in the mix!

Actually, I read an interview where Courtney Cox said that Brad was HONEST about his feelings for Angelina with Jen. Sure, they developed feelings for each other, but I don’t consider that to be cheating. I think it’s sad that people are still bitter over a marriage that disolved 7 years ago! And the media has played this drama into a tawdry soap opera when the reality seems to be a couple fell out of love and he moved on. Now he has six kids and seems really happy and Jen has no kids and has said she’s very happy. Doesn’t seem like the couple were ever on the same page. Happens all the time. AND it’s been 7 years, six kids–it’s time to let it go media and people.

Arnold’s situation is suprising (the word “shocking” is overused) because it has been so well hidden, but well, if that was their choice, so be it. Jude Law cheated on Sienna Miller with the nanny while they were engaged; then Sienna cheated on Rys Ifans with Baltazar Getty while Getty was still married. They are both cheaters who totally deserved each other.

Jude didn’t cheat on his wife. Sadie cheated on her first husband, though, and then left him and divorced him and took their kid. Jude cheated on Serial Miller, who he was dating and long after he and Sadie divorced.

Exactly, but some of these are incomparable. You can’t compare a man or woman having an affair on their girlfriend/boyfriend to a man keeping a live-in lover in the house where his wife and children live for 10 years. I think Arnold, Tiger, and John Edwards are the worst of the worst. Those guys, there’s something wrong upstairs.

My husband and I are just really open and honest with each other. We tell each other everything that goes on and everything that we’re feeling everyday, and we’re just really there for each other.
I think my husband taught me a lot about inner beauty and confidence in myself. I’m slim but voluptuous. He’s in love with the person inside of me, and the outside of me is just a bonus. I feel better—so much better now than I ever did in my twenties. I know who I am. And as a result, I feel much sexier.

John Edwards, actually. The sense of entitlement of some of these guys is scary, particularly politicians under a lot of press scrutiny. Although stunned J. Edwards thought he could pull off what he did, Ahnold’s is pretty appalling and insensitive. This woman stayed in the household with Maria Shriver for TEN years? Now that is insulting your spouse. It doesn’t get much worse.
John Edwards was more shocking because he did it while his poor wife had cancer! Other than that, cheating doesn’t surprise me. Celebrities are human, just like everyone else. They lie, cheat, and steal. People put them on a pedestal and expect them to be perfect.

I don’t think there was a majority of blame placed anywhere at the time, it was pretty equal. If you ask people now, they will blame him, say he cheated with Jolie; and it is what he will be known for for years to come. His box office performance since would not indicate he is loved by so many, but it is covered up by the fact that he does some quality projects, but he probably won’t ever win any awards.

Well, some people take their vows more seriously than others, I guess. It just depends on the person, whether they respect the sanctity of marriage. If you’ve been an entitled person for a while, you probably start feeling like rules don’t apply to you. But if you go into your marriage with a firm idea of who you are, who your partner is, and what kind of team you make together…and you are fully committed to your partner and to your vows…then I’d say there’s a much better chance of actually making it work. I read an article about Will and Jada Pinkett Smith, and how they just assume that divorce is not an option in their marriage, and they work at their relationship. Damn right. (Now, if those two are ever involved in a cheating scandal, I’ll be pretty shocked.) Anyways, there’s nothing wrong with marriage or the sanctity of it – it’s just that many people enter into it lightly, without fulling appreciating what it means to commit to someone for eternity; they just marry because they’re in love at the time, and that’s not enough for a lasting marriage.

See, that’s where people mess up. Don’t take everything they say as gospel, because people change over time. Just because last year they claimed this or that, doesn’t mean that things won’t change this year. They are all just human like we are. It wasn’t shocking to us women. Brad was interviewed maybe 6 times the last two years of that marriage saying the same thing: “I’d like kids someday. I’m looking forward to being a parent.” but Jennifer Aniston kept talking about her career. So when he saw someone who had them , that’s where he went. Back then I said Jen Aniston was the dumbest woman in the world ’cause I don’t know any woman had she the chance to be married to Brad Pitt who wouldn’t want to get knocked up by him….save her(JA). Now she’s crying in her cups one minute wishing and the next trying to still be the 30-something ingenue in rom-com movies. That last one she did with Brooklyn Decker should have been a wake up call for her. She’s not that great an actress.

Johnson Jr, of Mississippi fathered a child with his household staff during the Civil Rights movement and she was black.
Almost typical of powerful men (Governors, Politicians and Demi-Royalty) to take advantage of those they see as weak minded and of low society, such as the household staff (better known as house cleaners). This abuse of power goes far back in our American history.
