Arnold, Tiger, and other celebrity cheating scandals: Which one shocked you the most?

Last week, the geniuses at Taiwan’s Next Media Animation speculated that the Governator’s fondness for “groping” may have been behind Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver’s split. As it turns out, they weren’t too far off base — Schwarzenegger revealed today that he fathered a child with a member of his household’s staff 10 years ago. LIFE.com is taking his confession as an opportunity to revisit previous incidents of celebrity infidelity in a 29-slide gallery called “Cheating Scandals of the Stars.” We begin with Arnold before moving on to the likes of Jesse James, Tiger Woods, Jude Law, LeAnn Rimes and Eddie Cibrian — both of whom were married when they began seeing each other — and Elizabeth Taylor, whose escapades were too numerous to be confined to just one slide.

Which of these scandals shocked you the most when you first learned about it? Though it’s the newest one on the list, personally, I’d have to go with Schrivernegger. Over the years, so many articles had been written about the couple’s rock-solid, odd-couple marriage that I thought they’d be together forever. Ryan Phillippe and Reese Witherspoon would be a close second; I’d been rooting for those crazy kids since the days of Cruel Intentions. What say you, PopScandalWatchers?

This is going way back. But Bill Cosby surprised me.

    • Jeremiah

Yeah, I forgot about Mr. Huxtable… that was just sad. That lady said the bed was covered in pudding… and the penguin… that was a weird story.

      • o

        lol

      • Do you have Gleearrhea?

Personally I don’t care what any of these people do. What’s happening on the set of “Glee?” That’s so much more important and timely than any of this nonsense.

    • LOL

Arnold doesn’t surprise me. The GOP is filled with “family values” hypocrites.

      • Lauren

Like the libs are any better? Bill Clinton, John Edwards…When you point a finger, three point back at you.

      • @Lauren

But it’s worth it, because when we point a finger at you, a blue laser beam shoots out and scans your soul for traces of compassion which we then capture, bring back to lib headquarters, devour, and convert to energy to save the world!!!

      • Mike G

Yeah GOP to say nothing of the Kennedys or Clinton…way to misrepresent….

      • nancy

This doesn’t even have anything really to do with politics or celebrity. This is just plain craziness. If the question is which of those mentioned, or any others I can think of, are the most insane and disgusting, I vote Arnold. Sleeps with a household employee, fathers a child, keeps the woman in his employ IN THE SAME HOUSE WITH HIS WIFE AND other CHILDREN, and then tells her 10YRS down the line! It doesn’t get any sicker than that. My heart just breaks for those kids!

      • MikeB

Of course these libs don’t run around playing holier than thou and voting against the civil rights of others because they claim to be so much more godly and prove themselves time and time again to be no better than anyone else, but liking to pretend they are.

      • Mellissa

Hey, Lauren, that was only two fingers pointing back.

    • Zack

What tv show is this all from?

      • sarah

exactly. stop being a celeb gossip rag, ew!

    • What’s really shocked me most is

…the pretend outrage people have over such trivial and stupid issues. He screwed around. Who cares? Seriously—how does this affect me, my life or the lives of anyone that I know? Answer: it doesn’t. I’m detached from what Arnold does, and while I feel pity for Maria Shriver for being in this situation, at least she has more options than the average woman. Hell, I’m surprised that ABC hasn’t already pitched a “Divorced Celebs Find New True Love” version of “The Bachelor.”

      • whatevs

I’m pretty sure nothing on an entertainment blog is supposed to affect you.

    • Rush

I’m surprised Arnold stayed married to that hatchet face for as long as he did. Was that woman even capable of cracking a smile?

  • Karate Pants

Ugh, none of them. It’s impossible to be personally disappointed by celebrity behavior.
I just wanted to tell how much your word “Schrivernegger” bothers me. heh

    • Ace

Agreed on “Schrivernegger.” It just sounds… really wrong.

  • Christopher

I still can’t believe Arnold went “Full Kennedy”.

    • Mother Teresa

I can totally believe you went “full moron”

    • susan

      Hey
      Good one!!

  • Lauren

Ryan and Reese broke up because of cheating? Missed that! I did love them as a couple though. Tiger was pretty shocking just because the stories and the women just kept coming! When did that guy have time to play golf?

    • jan jan

Uh, yeah. He cheated WITH Abbie Cornish and then cheated ON her.

      • Swerds

Yup, a woman who is promoted from mistress to wife (or girlfriend, in this case) leaves a vacancy in her former position.

    • whatevs

Even though he didn’t outright say it, he did admit, “I’m not a perfect person.”

    • Lauren

Hmmm yeah just thought Pitt/Aniston. That really tore me up. I think Jennifer was in it for life. Pitt really disappointed me. Jolie had already broken up Billy Bob’s engagement, I guess that wasn’t challenging enough so she went and broke a marriage. I give her more fault b/c she has a history of going after men in relationships. I’ve still never watched Mr. & Mrs. Smith. It just feels wrong to watch as people started an affair that broke a marriage.

      • Stacie

Homewrecker is a misnomer. They wouldn’t have broken up if there weren’t problems to begin with.

      • Miss Swan

Lauren you have way too much invested in other peoples relationships just sayin

      • Shannon

        Spoken like a homewrecker, Stacie.

      • CanuckJen

Sorry folks…have to agree with Stacey. As an outsider looking in (aren’t we all?) I think Brad Pitt wanted children and Jennifer, for whatever reason, didn’t at that time in her life. Nothing against her but they just weren’t on the same page. From things I have read I think he fell in love with the idea of being a dad (by playing and hanging out with Maddox) and that eventually turned into a relationship with Maddox’s mom. To me they seem like a happy couple…at least I hope they are with 6 kids now in the mix!

      • jazzie

        But CanuckJen, he still cheated.

      • CanuckJen

        very true

      • My son is also named Bort

Jennifer Aniston is a interesting as wet cardboard.

      • Liv

I was realyl surprised by this one as well. It seemed like Brad & Jen really loved each other. I’ve never understood the appeal of Angelina Jolie.

      • kremzeek!

why do women get so emotionally invested in famous couples?seriously.

      • DaizeMay

Totally agree “My son is also named Bort”…that or beige paint. And as deep as a sheet of paper.

      • Whatever

Actually, I read an interview where Courtney Cox said that Brad was HONEST about his feelings for Angelina with Jen. Sure, they developed feelings for each other, but I don’t consider that to be cheating. I think it’s sad that people are still bitter over a marriage that disolved 7 years ago! And the media has played this drama into a tawdry soap opera when the reality seems to be a couple fell out of love and he moved on. Now he has six kids and seems really happy and Jen has no kids and has said she’s very happy. Doesn’t seem like the couple were ever on the same page. Happens all the time. AND it’s been 7 years, six kids–it’s time to let it go media and people.

  • lefty

Tiger’s is probably the most “shocking” for me, just because he’s such a square.

    • anne

A couple of other golfers came out and said that Tiger was always this sort of “Eddie Haskel” type, and bad mouth everyone in the locker room.

    • nancy

As disgusting as all of Tiger’s antics were, Arnold still wins the “shocking” prize. Tiger’s was just run of the mill, immoral cheating, albeit in some mindboggling numbers. But Arnold… Keeping the woman as an employee IN THE HOUSE WITH HIS WIFE AND other CHILDREN for 10 YEARS???!!!!!!!!!??? How do you top that in the “worst” category? What must his children be going through at this point?

      • Christopher

how about cheating on your wife with cancer, that might top it? For that reason the Edwards scandal caught me way way way off guard.

    • kremzeek!

      yeah,but he’s a brother so he’s carryin’ heavy.that’s the one stereotype we like(borish snort-laugh)

  • Sorry, had to be said

leAnn Rhimes & Cibrian. People just ran a 3 page pic of their wedding. I secretly wished them the worst.

  • moonie

Why do you even bother listing just a simple few? The ones you listed aren’t a drop in the bucket and so mild. What about Brad, Tom Hanks, Meg Ryan, Julia Roberts, Chris Martin, Sienna Miller and Balti Getty, I mean, come on. I don’t give a flip about Jude Law having sex behind Sienna Miller’s back; her whole personality is scandalous and she probably deserved it.
Arnold’s situation is suprising (the word “shocking” is overused) because it has been so well hidden, but well, if that was their choice, so be it. I’m sure a lot more stuff is hidden about people we think are so saintly. Just don’t put them on pedestabls, they are after all people who probably have very good qualities other than difficulty with a relationship. It’s their business.

    • Sherrip

Jude Laws cheating is more likely in reference to his cheating with the nanny of his 4 kids when he was married to, I wanna say Sadie Frost was her name?, long before the stuff with Sienna Miller ever happened

      • M

Jude Law cheated on Sienna Miller with the nanny while they were engaged; then Sienna cheated on Rys Ifans with Baltazar Getty while Getty was still married. They are both cheaters who totally deserved each other.

      • tammy

Why did Jude and Sienna deserve each other? We are talking about a whole population of “cheaters” here today, why do Jude and Sienna “deserve” each other? They aren’t any worse than anyone else mentioned. Your percepton is screwed up.

      • Marge

Jude didn’t cheat on his wife. Sadie cheated on her first husband, though, and then left him and divorced him and took their kid. Jude cheated on Serial Miller, who he was dating and long after he and Sadie divorced.

    • Sherrip

sorry, I totally mixed stuff up

    • anne

      Tom Hanks?

      • tammy

        Yep, with Rita Wilson.

    • Jane

Dennis Quaid cheated on Meg Ryan for years and years and years while they were married. So HE was the cheater, not her.

    • nancy

“difficulty with a relationship”? No, I don’t think Arnold gets away with that. First, this has nothing to do with celebrity or politics–immoral cheating goes on every day all over the world. And, if you want to chalk that up to “difficulty with a relationship,” go for it, although is certainly a cop out in my opinion. But Arnold kept the woman, with whom he fathered a child, as an employee IN THE HOME OF HIS WIFE AND other CHILDREN for 10 YEARS!!!!! Not sure how you top that in the “worst of the worst” category

      • jazzie

Exactly, but some of these are incomparable. You can’t compare a man or woman having an affair on their girlfriend/boyfriend to a man keeping a live-in lover in the house where his wife and children live for 10 years. I think Arnold, Tiger, and John Edwards are the worst of the worst. Those guys, there’s something wrong upstairs.
Everyone else, yeah, you might say relationship trouble, mistake.

  • Lorraine O’Connor

It is a shame that these marriages collapsed. Marriage, in my experience, takes work. A lot of work.
My husband and I are just really open and honest with each other. We tell each other everything that goes on and everything that we’re feeling everyday, and we’re just really there for each other.
I think my husband taught me a lot about inner beauty and confidence in myself. I’m slim but voluptuous. He’s in love with the person inside of me, and the outside of me is just a bonus. I feel better—so much better now than I ever did in my twenties. I know who I am. And as a result, I feel much sexier.

    • LOL

Hilarious. Lorraine’s blowin’ it up today! I credit her endurance to her slim figure.

      • julia

is it just me or did lorraine o’connor already post the exact same thing on a different post…wow deja vu

      • o

she posts the same stuff on another site I visit.

      • Le HIROSHI

        @o,

        *

I haven’t read all the articles on this site. But she kept posting all the same thing on this site, too. Weird.

        *

I think she may be a trolling ’bot, lol.

      • Sarcastic Pr*ck

I find it inspiring that Lorraine shares the secrets of her successful marriage to encourage all of us to achieve greatness in our own personal relationships. Bravo, girl!

    • GHB

Yeah Lorraine is back. I’ll say it again, your hubby is getting tail all over town!

  • justjack

I had a really hard time believing ANYONE would leave Dennis Quaid… just sayin.

    • Becky Anne Leaman

Russell Crowe… the ‘Gladiator’ era… just sayin’.

  • Yo

John Edwards, actually. The sense of entitlement of some of these guys is scary, particularly politicians under a lot of press scrutiny. Although stunned J. Edwards thought he could pull off what he did, Ahnold’s is pretty appalling and insensitive. This woman stayed in the household with Maria Shriver for TEN years? Now that is insulting your spouse. It doesn’t get much worse.

    • frggrl

John Edwards was more shocking because he did it while his poor wife had cancer! Other than that, cheating doesn’t surprise me. Celebrities are human, just like everyone else. They lie, cheat, and steal. People put them on a pedestal and expect them to be perfect.

      • Mother Teresa

yeah, and John McCain did it after his wife had a horrible accident. Disgusting

  • M. Farrow

    Definitely Woody Allen and Soon-Yi.

    • JenD

      Agree!

    • Carla in Houston

@M. Farrow: Bingo, that’s the one I was trying to recall. This one is so much more “shocking” to me because he cheated with his wife’s (adopted) daughter. Ugh, that’s just skeevy!

    • Sara

That’s one of the most ick-tastic affairs of all time.

      • elizabeth

I think Morgan Freeman might top Woody Allen. The man who played God in two movies is actually in a romantic relationship with his stepgrandaughter that he and his second wife have raised together. She is 28, the affair has gone on at least 11 YEARS!!! She is the granddaughter of his first wife, but he and is second wife raised her. Now hows that for ick-tastic?

      • Ally

robert, i don’t think there’s a standard scrpit for corporate annual dinners they are all unique AFAIK how about just make sure you get all the names right, the event sequence, etc. you don’t need to be fancy at all in corporate event. just be yourself. once you get some experience you’ll be able to add salt add vinegar enjoy!

    • Jen

      That’s right! I can’t believe this one wasn’t mentioned.

  • o

Brad Pitt. People still hate Angelina after all this time and tabloids are still making money from the scandal.lol

  • Kevin

Brad Pitt cheating on Jennifer Aniston was such a shocker, they seemed extremely happy. He has never looked as happy with Jolie, and he has aged considerably since the whole thing.

    • GeeMoney

      Six kids will age ANYONE.

      • kremzeek!

ONE kid will age anyone.trust me.

    • o

LoL i love this argument. “he doesn’t look happy with jolie.” all the pix I see of him he has a big ole grin on his face. I think this hoopla over him has made his ego even bigger.

      • lefty

We are definitely not looking at the same pictures. They always look so grim.

      • Kevin

look, I am not saying he is miserable, but I do think he knows on some level he made a mistake, Jolie is a nutjob

      • o

LoL Brad is a huge very much loved star. he could leave Angelina when ever he wants and people will still adore him. Look at how people reacted when he left jennifer. They blamed jennifer and Angelina and brad got off easy. that makes me think he’s exactly where he wants to be. Angelina on the other hand…

      • Kevin

I don’t think there was a majority of blame placed anywhere at the time, it was pretty equal. If you ask people now, they will blame him, say he cheated with Jolie; and it is what he will be known for for years to come. His box office performance since would not indicate he is loved by so many, but it is covered up by the fact that he does some quality projects, but he probably won’t ever win any awards.

      • Cydney Partridge

Brad has a sick grin on his face and his hands on Angelina’s a$$ every time.LOL…

  • GeeMoney

The Brad Pitt/Jennifer Aniston break up was the most shocking to me. They seemed so happy.

I’m starting to question the whole sanctity of marriage now… why get married and risk hurting your spouse if you are just going to cheat on them?!?!?

    • Karate Pants

      You can’t be serious!

    • Kat

Well, some people take their vows more seriously than others, I guess. It just depends on the person, whether they respect the sanctity of marriage. If you’ve been an entitled person for a while, you probably start feeling like rules don’t apply to you. But if you go into your marriage with a firm idea of who you are, who your partner is, and what kind of team you make together…and you are fully committed to your partner and to your vows…then I’d say there’s a much better chance of actually making it work. I read an article about Will and Jada Pinkett Smith, and how they just assume that divorce is not an option in their marriage, and they work at their relationship. Damn right. (Now, if those two are ever involved in a cheating scandal, I’ll be pretty shocked.) Anyways, there’s nothing wrong with marriage or the sanctity of it – it’s just that many people enter into it lightly, without fulling appreciating what it means to commit to someone for eternity; they just marry because they’re in love at the time, and that’s not enough for a lasting marriage.

      • Kat

Whoops that should have read “fully appreciating” in the last sentence there.

      • tammy

See, that’s where people mess up. Don’t take everything they say as gospel, because people change over time. Just because last year they claimed this or that, doesn’t mean that things won’t change this year. They are all just human like we are. It doesn’t make them better or worse than people who have problems. They might be really screwed up in other ways, you know?

      • Rocki

It is bc they are swingers also.

    • Cydney Partridge

It wasn’t shocking to us women. Brad was interviewed maybe 6 times the last two years of that marriage saying the same thing: “I’d like kids someday. I’m looking forward to being a parent.” but Jennifer Aniston kept talking about her career. So when he saw someone who had them , that’s where he went. Back then I said Jen Aniston was the dumbest woman in the world ’cause I don’t know any woman had she the chance to be married to Brad Pitt who wouldn’t want to get knocked up by him….save her(JA). Now she’s crying in her cups one minute wishing and the next trying to still be the 30-something ingenue in rom-com movies. That last one she did with Brooklyn Decker should have been a wake up call for her. She’s not that great an actress.

      • kremzeek!

so it’s fine when brad pitt does it?i like him as an actor, but if he does dirt, you gotta line him up with all the other do-dirties you’d look down upon.

      • kiki

Courtney Cox said that Brad was honest about his feelings for Angelina to Jen. But my guess it’s easier to play the victim and the wronged wife for Public pity points than to admit you both didn’t want the same things and it wasn’t going to work out anyways. No man leaves a woman with two adopted kids unless he REALLY wants children himself and that always seemed to be his priority.

  • Babies Daddy

It comes with no suprise that former Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has fathered a child from household staff. He isn’t the first nor the last politician to do so. Remember John McCain fits the same catagory and a more shocking predecessor, the 1964, the also married former Governor, Paul B. Johnson Jr, of Mississippi fathered a child with his household staff during the Civil Rights movement and she was black.

Almost typical of powerful men (Governors, Politicians and Demi-Royalty) to take advantage of those they see as weak minded and of low society, such as the household staff (better known as house cleaners). This abuse of power goes far back in our American history.

    • Al

John McCain never fathered a child with one of his staff. He and his wife adopted a child from Bangledesh and his opponents put out a rumor that he had fathered her in an interracial affair.

      • Christopher

That rumor was masterminded by Karl Rove to knock John McCain out of the 2004 election.

      • Cydney Partridge

Al. John McCain was having an affair with the very rich heiress Miss Cindy Hensley of the company that distributes Budweiser Beer. For a guy campaigning on family values, John McCain has broken up a lot of marriages. When he met his first wife (a swimsuit model), she was married to naval academy classmate of his. After he broke that marriage up, she stuck by him loyally as he went off to war and was a prisoner for 5 and a half years. When he returned to America, though, he found out that she had been in a car wreck and wasn’t as pretty. So he had a series of affairs, by his own admission, and dumped his wife and adopted family for a younger, very rich blond (now Cindy McCain.) Cindy, the daughter of a wealthy Budweiser beer distributor, was addicted to prescription narcotics and even stole hard drugs from a medical charity that she ran.

    • Flyer

@Babies Daddy, you may be confusing John McCain with Strom Thurmond, who DID father a child with a black woman who was on his houshold staff.

    • sarah d

John McCain’s daughter is NOT from a staffer. Cindy McCain brought her back from a charity mission to have her cleft pallate fixed and adopted her.
