Lady Gaga to mentor 'American Idol' Top 4 contestants. Bring the drama!

Expect a surge in the Top 4’s performance level next week: Fox has confirmed to EW that Lady Gaga is set to appear on American Idol as a mentor for our remaining finalists. And before you scoff at the idea of a 25-year-old handing out career advice, remember that Miley Cyrus served as a mentor on the show last year, at the ripe age of 17 years old. And it’s not like Gaga doesn’t have anything to offer — some of our contestants (ahem, Lauren!) still have plenty to learn when it comes to truly performing to a crowd. Who better to teach them than the dramatic artist herself? (If only Pia were still around to pick up a few pointers… )

But it’s interesting to consider how she might aid the contestants, considering next week’s theme. While Gaga would have seemed an appropriate mentor during “Now & Then” week — who wouldn’t want a currently charting artist doling out advice on current music? — the contestants will be singing Leiber & Stoller numbers next week. And for you youngsters out there, Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller were known for penning such Post-World War II hits as “Jailhouse Rock,” “Yakety Yak,” and “Hound Dog.” (A theme created for the Elvis-loving Scotty? Conspiracy theorists, discuss!) If nothing else, however, Gaga has proven to be an old soul capable of eschewing Auto-Tune for old-school performances utilizing just her voice and a piano (check out her acoustic version of “Poker Face,” for one), so perhaps the flexible Gaga’s a better choice than one would think.

If nothing else, at least she’ll be on Haley’s side, right? (Lord knows the girl needs an ally.)

What do you think about Gaga mentoring the Idols, PopWatchers?

Scotty and Lady Gaga…interesting. I hope Haley sings, “I’m a woman.” She could rock that song!

    • sakara

gaga ISN’T interesting—she’s a ripoff…she can teach women entertainers how to be a plagerist and a skank.

      • Tye-Grr

      • Yanni

Gaga: “Seriously guys, you CAN write a song about anything in three minutes. You, you there—what’s in your hand?”
        Haley: “A ham sandwich.”
Lady Gaga: “Your next #1: HA HA HA HA HA… HAM SAND-WAHCH!”
Haley: “Oh wow! I get it! That didn’t take ANYTIME!”
Lady Gaga: “My work is done.”

      • Yanni

Scotty: “But what about ME, Lady Gaga ma’am? I don’t know what to do next and that makes me sad.”
        Lady Gaga: “Country Gay—”
Scotty: “But ma’am, I’m not gay—”
Lady Gaga: “I said Country Gay, you were born this way to express yourself. Hey! Hey! Hey—I’m talking! You know, I hit the big time, but I still get the blues. Everyone’s a stranger… (looks vaguely into the distance).”
        Scotty: “That sounds familiar.”
Lady Gaga: “No it doesn’t—you’re retarded.”

      • Yanni

I would continue with the other two contestants—but neither of them will win anyway.

      • Brett

        Yanni – you’re comedy gold.

      • Now Thats Funny

Lady Gaga..a mentor? She cant even dance on the own stage without falling..

      • Judas sucks & stinks

The worst copycat USA has ever produced!

      • BLUEK

        This lady is so FORCED!

Am I the only one who always sees “Born This Way” (AUDIO) featured on youtube EVERYDAY?????? Yeah… like I said…… FORCED. They throw her in our faces so she can “grow” on us..

    • Jackie

I hope she RIPS into Lauren for singing half-a**.

      • Yuck Tuihhh

She thinks she is going to be groundbreaking. She is trying to rip off Grace Jones, Madonna, Christina, Kylie & Britney to shore up her talentless, mundane, and boring performances.

Another music puppet whose head is turned around 360 degree probably with some meths to make herself looks relevant.

    • Amaya Asian Wariior Queen

What can LG offer to these youngsters? To focus more on gimmickry than their musicality? To ripoff music legends and never admit it?

      • Ralph

Exactly. Is she going to show them all Madonna’s old moves?

      • Mike

Haley is ripping off adele, so I don’t see whats so bad about it

      • CatWalk

Who and what did she “rip off”? If you think Madonna, then why hasn’t the material girl sued yet? Sampling has been done for years and years and all you have to do is leave out one note and it is considered NOT THE SAME. Unless we were in the studio when this was produced then we should lay off something we know nothing about.

      • Brett

She ripped off Madonna. The fact that Madonna hasn’t sued doesn’t change the fact that Gaga has patterned her career after Madonna’s and that her most recent song is basically “Express Yourself” with slightly different lyrics. Gaga DOES have a better voice than Madonna, but Madonna is more original.

      • Yanni

She doesn’t sue because it would be bad form and she doesn’t have anything to gain by attacking someone who is currently at the top of the charts. Everyone knows that the song isn’t direct plagiarism, but it’s at the very least—an homage. And for Lady Gaga to insist that the two are entirely dissimilar is ridiculous. But in the long run, LG is doing nothing but hurting her own career and her longevity by making herself look like a copycat who has run out of original ideas. Neither BTW or “Judas” are even remotely close in quality to her earlier songs—the only reason why BTW topped the charts is because it’s a gay-friendly anthem. That doesn’t make it a good song. And “Judas” is dreadful.

    • char mint

NoooOo! Anything but that song for her, ttoo predictable.

    • Queen of Xerox

What Gaga produces in the market is void of all talent !!!

She’s a freak that people in need of cheap, easy entertainment follow. Gaga is actually very talented but this crap in the market doesn’t hold a candle to REAL talent, hers or anyone elses. Her voice is digitized in every single song, the choreography in her videos is horrendous and she has to go overboard on her outfits to cover up the fact that she is so butt faced ugly.

Everything she has done is un0riginal and tired.

    • Rihanna 10th #1

Gaga is a no talent hack. Why are people buying into her rewarmed version of Madonna’s concepts?

It was provocative when Madonna did it. Now Gaga is just a plain awful Xerox human machine. She should stick to sucking ‘corks’ & ‘screws’.

At least that’s mildly entertaining than orgy-themed 80s video named Judas.

    • Squishmar

I like the “I’m a Woman” suggestion for Haley.

    • Hilda

I can hardly wait to see what Lady Gaga thinks Scotty should do and sing.
Never cared for her. Maybe I will like what she does with the four singers left.
James, Lauren and Haley will have an easier time, but Scotty?
      Interesting to see him move……..!

  • UGH

Scotty will sing Born This Way like the acoustic version.

    • ktct

He can’t- it’s not part of the theme.

    • Templar

No one , especially Scotty should sing “Hound Dog”.

      • PN

Scotty loves to sing those Elvis songs! He can’t get away from that. I don’t see him doing Gaga’s own Born This Way.

  • Daw Johnson

    FOX “confirmed to EW.”

Or…FOX sent out a press release to everyone in the media.

  • Bernard Tilman

Lady Gaga doesn’t have a good figure anymore and is a bad example to women around the country. She was so voluptuous in 2008/2009 for a while when she first became famous but has lost so much weight and is too skinny now. Why did she do it? She was perfect before. Please put 10 pounds back on. She looks wasted. She should have a healthy model figure that boasts an ample cleavage, fuller legs and a fuller backside.

    • whatevs

No one thinks she’s too skinny. She looks like a lot of people. If anything, she looks bad because she’s so pale.

    • AngieLam

You know, I have just been attributing her weight loss to the amount of dancing she does when she performs. Girl dances like a fiend!!!

    • Woot

I agree with AngieLam. She has been touring so much more than she did back when her career first started…bound to lose some weight. And she is by no means skeletal. She looks healthy to me, though she could stand to gain a few pounds.

      • Krystal

I think its the dancing. She is touring so much what like 5 days a week dancing for 2 hours? That alone will make you lose weight. I think she looks fine.

    • sakara

COCAINE….everybody in entertainment stays thin with COCAINE—-nobody stays thin with exercise or diet.

      • skinny girl

        …from the mouth of experience??

      • She is a biker girl, remember

        ..or STDs ?!

    • MultiPass

Try working that hard and see how much weight you can hold onto. Hey you might lose that extra 30 lobs, sweetie!

  • Summer Bay

Why will there be drama? It’s not Lindsay Lohan. Gaga takes her music very seriously.

    • sakara

yeah, gaga is a serious PLAGERIST.

      • Desmond

It’s spelled “plagiarist”. If you insist on insulting Gaga, please don’t butcher the English language in the process.

      • Wit

I believe the word is plagiarist.

      • CatWalk

Jealous much? Exactly who and what do you think she plagerized? Just curious.

    • Ralph

Lindsay Lohan as a mentor! Now THAT would be worth watching. Didn’t she record an album?

  • Marie Skinner

Your show is the best ever. What a delight to relax and appreciate the wonderful showcase opportunity for the absolutely fantastically talented youth And the BEST is the judges are so respectable and so respectful to the singers.such a breath of fresh air from the other pathetic show Simon and Paula constantly did to all of them and us. THANK you all of the show is SUPERB

    • Templar

  • Carly

I hope that Lady Gaga has a cameo in Star Trek 12 as a singer and her character could have dark connections to the Orion Syndicate (the mafia of the Star Trek universe) who should be the villains of the sequel. With her futuristic music and style, she would fit right in.
Midway through Star Trek 12, I’d like to see Kirk, Spock and McCoy go undercover to a concert of hers on a distant planet like with Diva Plavalaguna in The Fifth Element (1997). When she sings Bad Romance, Paparazzi, Poker Face or Just Dance, her show could be raided by Syndicate henchmen who have a thunderous phaser fight with Kirk, Spock and McCoy.

    • Brian

OMG CARLY! stop trolling! you’ve already posted this on previous EW articles are GAGA.

    • sakara

i’d like to see gaga in a star trek movie where she is trapped on a faraway planet, never to plagerize prior singers again.

      • Desmond

        Good god woman/man/ugly troll, “plagiarize”

      • I’ll Bite

What plagiarism are you referring to? You’ve mentioned it 10 times in 1 hour. What gives?

      • CatWalk

  • Danielle

OK…am I the ONLY person completely over GaGa? I mean her new song (“Judas”) is lackluster and not doing well on iTunes or airplay charts at all and she’s everywhere. And that interview where she broke down crying whining about how hard it is to be “Lady GaGa” and calling herself “queen”? Please. She needs a reality check.

    • c-squared

I could not agree with you more, so you are NOT the only person who is over GaGa. She tries way too hard to out do herself. Also, isn’t “Judas” the SAME song as “Alejandro?”

      • Woot

When did you get in a tragic accident that caused you to become hearing impaired? I mean you can hate on Lady Gaga, but in what way does “Judas” sound like “Alejandro?” It’s consistently been compared to “Bad Romance” and “Poker Face.”

      • drake

Ummm no. Why don’t you actually listen to those songs. It is structured like Bad Romance, with a little mix of Poker Face.

    • Brett

I’m not “over” Gaga; I was never “into” her in the first place. Christopher Walken’s version of “Poker Face” shows more talent.

      • Squishmar

That reminds me… I need to go see that. I’ve been meaning to… I hear it’s great!

    • PN

But maybe Gaga is doing all that crying because she’s so dedicated as an artist and doesn’t like to be called a ripoff of other artists and their songs. She’s very tough despite the criticism placed on her and she defends her music and craft and belonging.

  • LG

Another relevant and contemporary theme week for Idol…snooze

  • Smallville

  • Gaga Overload

I like Gaga, I really do. However, I must express myself to say that she is EVERYWHERE. Can she please take a vacation? She’s 2 singles into an CD that isn’t even out yet. Judas has indeed proved underwhelming. She needs to learn to stop putting everything but the kitchen sink in her songs.

    • Michelle

Part of the problem is I love this site, I really REALLY do, but, GaGa is 24/7 here. If she burps, it’s on the home page.

      • wakeforce

Beleve me, the editors would stop putting her in if people just ignored her, but everyime her name is written, people keep responding.

    • PN

I’m not getting tired of Lady Gaga. I’m looking forward to her FULL LENGTH album in May. That Fame Monster EP album doesn’t count. She hasn’t had a full length of over a dozen songs since The Fame in 2008 and I’d rather hear a whole body of songs than some 8 or 9 songs or remixes. It took a while for people to get into her sound because Beyonce and Britney had albums out, but it shifted to Gaga as 2009 and 2010 went through and there’s so much big anticipation for 2011’s Born This Way.

    • peaches

Agreed. We need a break from her. She needs to marry a movie star make few bad movies and then release a video with religious imagery. Any graduate of Madonna University knows that’s the order of things.

  • ann

I wonder if she’ll wear her meat dress.

  • cookie love

    Gag me. Ugh.

  • Brigette

I think Lady Gaga will be great. I remember last year when Miley mentored, everyone KILLED it, she seemed to have instilled them with so much confidence even though she was so young. Gaga’s a passionate person, so I hope she does the same. Not too crazy about the theme, though. Ugh, do I have to sit through Scotty singing Hound Dog?

  • Sally

If Gaga is coming in, thank goodness Jacob is gone! Whew. I am not a Gaga fan, but she is classically trained on the piano which means she knows the notes. Like Gaga Overload, I have had enough of her for a while. She is now like Sheryl Crow used to be – EVERYWHERE. Go away.
