My Week 7 chat with Dancing With the Stars host Tom Bergeron is chock full o’ gems:
- On his hair: “I don’t mind if it’s graying, as long as it’s staying.”
- Tom and the DWTS production staff have nothing better to do than stand around and talk about the brilliance of EW.com’s Hidden Gems. How awful!
- When throwing to Diane Sawyer — with whom he has a strictly flirtatious professional relationship thanks to a Good Morning America stint — Tom had to make a conscious effort to tone down the jauntiness and “maintain a certain level of ballroom gravitas.”
- Tom believes Mark Ballas’s explanation of Monday’s “wanker” hand gesture: It was intended for his dad, Corky, as a “You gotta roll the dice with the choreography” inside joke. But as Tom counseled Mark after the show, “If that was a gesture of self-gratification, you’re really bragging about your size, because that was WAY off to the side.”

All of Annie’s ‘DWTS’ episode recaps

Tom is the best!
Talent competition shows should be for people that are NOT stars yet. Undiscovered talented people should be the ones getting attention.
The shows Americas Got Talent and So You Think You Can Dance are much better than this show.
Annie, why do you write for this show and American Idol? You clearly don’t like American Idol so I wish you would stop writing the American Idol blogs. You should just stick to writing for this crappy dancing show and get someone who loves music to write the American Idol blogs.
This is such a weird threat. I happen to love the format of D-list celebrities learning ballroom dance; what’s the fun of random people off the street learning ballroom? And why can’t there be a few reality shows that aren’t about finding undiscovered talent? There’s already SO many of those. And what does Tom Bergeron have to do with American Idol? I think Annie likes Idol when it’s good…but it hasn’t been too great this season. Nothing wrong with saying so. So ANYWAYS…I agree with Jessica, Tom IS the best!
LOL whoops. Thread, not threat.
This show sucks! They are already stars, so they need to get the he## off talent competition TV.
“They are already stars, so they need to get the he## off talent competition TV.”
Um…you DO know that they use the term “star” loosely, right? And would anybody really give two hoots to watch a bunch of nobodies compete for a garishly ugly trophy?
so they should do Dancing With the Nobodys inseady?
“Rolling the dice”? Riiight.
I DO believe we have a new euphemism.
Right? hahahah thats’ what i’m saying.
Tom sums it up when he says that it was a misconstrued gesture or Mark really “has a heighten sense of his own abilities.”
That about sums it up!!
I LOVE TOM
Tom, do you really believe he was “rolling the dice”? Come on. That moron (Mark) should be thrown off the show for that gesture. My young children were watching.
What were your YOUNG children doing up so late? How would your children know what either gesture meant?
I agree I should hope young children don’t understand either gesture. However, as far as the kids being up late… in the central time zone the show starts at 7pm. I have young kids and they are generally up til 8, sometimes later. I don’t remember what time Mark was on specifically, but it wouldn’t be that unheard of for young kids to be watching.
I could not agree more – he has lost his grip – vote him out America.
Bob- I’ve seen known several people who have used the same gesture when referring to taking risks, and when asked, they replied, “you know, rolling the dice.”
Besides that, how in the world would your young children even know what the gesture could have been construed as??
I believe Mark, because I have done that Roll Of The Dice gesture a 100 times myself. He did that right before he was to receive his scores. I met Mark and he is so kind and humble, and would never do something like that on tv with kids watching! In fact Mark goes around to schools talking to kids about suicide prevention. He is a very passionate person and a talented singer and dancer!
Okay maybe I should have said teenagers. I guess I will always consider them young. Anyways, it was an awkward momemt for all of us.
It’s great that Tom is trying to stand up for him, but…I don’t believe it. Mark is SO cocky and childish. I honestly wonder if the only reason I find Chelsea unlikable is because she’s paired with him.
OMG, I absolutely LOVE that Tom & the crew talk about hidden gems! That only makes me more obsessed. In my demented brain I will dream about Tom uttering the name “Jem Ho” and discussing my fabulous gem hunting skills specifically.
And I love that he sort of alluded to the ‘Francisco Franco is still dead’ thing about the cut aways to Diane Sawyer. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again… Tom is da bomb.
Can’t wait to see what Tom has to say about this next week!

Im going to be gem hunting like mad crazy come next monday…the fact that the crew n stuff talk about it is AWESOME! Im glad they get a kick out of it, it makes it all worth while comming from the many folks behind the scenes that we dont see who work so hard to put on the show…too bad the ‘rhinestone studded’ remark was scripted, Ima still consider it a hidden gem tho
