'Jem' is back, will be outrageous on The Hub

Jem

Perhaps it was the insanely enthusiastic ’80s font, or my desire to transform from a five-year-old into a fabulous rock star who sings horrible music, but as a child, there was nothing better than Jem and the Holograms. The 1980s cartoon — revolving around a woman named Jerrica who was a businesswoman by day and a rock goddess named Jem by night, thanks to a pair of high-tech earrings (she went to Jared!) — was Hannah Montana for the children of the ’80s, except with terrible hair and without the tween-driven mega-exposure that led to monstrosities like “Party in the U.S.A.” Instead, Jem led to monstrosities like “Come On In,” “Love Is Here,” and “Gimme, Gimme, Gimme” (The Misfits, the Holograms’ rival band, had you beat, Britney!) — all of which I had on a cassette tape that I still own. To me, Jem had everything: Holograms (the root of why I love CNN), an overpowering pink hue, and a marketable premise that produced a line of dolls, many of which could be easily confused with a contestant on RuPaul’s Drag Race. (Exhibit A: This was the one I owned.)

So imagine my pure and utter joy discovering that The Hub TV would be adding old episodes of Jem to its lineup, starting May 31. (A sneak peek of six episodes will air May 28; check out the network’s website to track down your local channel.) With the exception of My Little Pony, there is no other ’80s program I’d most like to revisit and quickly devour. Will it be as awe-inspiring as I remember? No. Will it stand the test of time? Definitely not. But will it make me feel five years old again? Absolutely. I might just swallow the episodes with a Friendly’s Peanut Butter Cup Sundae while styling my hair with a handful of Dep.

How pumped are you, PopWatchers? And what’s your favorite Jem memory? I can still recall the Jem book I owned, in which Jerrica’s jealous younger sister Kimber poured paint all over the Holograms’ sparkly costumes, but Jem made them work anyway. Tim Gunn would be so proud. Also: Who else is fully prepared to be confused by the fact that Jerrica doesn’t seem to care that her boyfriend, Rio, cheats on her with Jem? They’re the same person! How is Jerrica not upset by this?! #NostalgicPetPeeve

So excited about this! I have debates with my coworker about the merits of Jem. Glad to be able to relive some childhood memories. If I could only get a pair of the Jem-star earrings…

    • Kristina

I made my own Jem earrings as a kid AND named my very first pet – a hamster – after her. I loved this show like there was no tomorrow. Way to go, Hub!

      • Mari

I had a pair of clip-on earrings that I used to pretend that I was Jem- I was totally obsessed! So glad they are airing he show again!

  • Daisy

Wow, I loved this show as a kid! I remember the theme song the most. She sang her heart out lol. Jem is truly truly truly outrageous!

  • JJ

Say what you will about Jem’s hair but you gotta admit that you KNOW you’ll see Gaga, Katy Perry or Nicki Minaj with a wig emulating her. Jem was poorly animated and a flimsy premise but pure fun for kids. The dual identity is always appealing and not too mention truly outrageous. I’m still surprised that given the popularity of Hannah Montana and Destiny’s Child someone has tried to reboot Jem for today’s audience. Perhaps in time someone will find the right amount of SYNERGY!

I heart this blog post! Jem was one of my favorite 80s cartoons, but Rainbow Brite holds the #1 spot in my rankings.

    • Kristen

I’m with you there. I Love Rainbow Brite!

  • ImStillToni

YES!!! Sundays were my favorite day of the week thanks to Jem. lmao I used rub a pair of plastic earrings & pray for a talking computer like Synergy!

  • blockhead

I found the entire show on DVD a few years ago in an outlet mall in Branson, MO!!! Totally awesome & truly outrageous! I don’t know why they haven’t shown these before. Every kid I allow to watch these go gaga for them.

  • DP

FYI, Kate–the earring weren’t magical, but a product of technology.

  • Nikki

I will admit to this guilty pleasure. Being the only girl in the house, I took some abuse over this one from my 3 older brothers. I will watch it and enjoy the cheeseyness of it all…. @ JJ LOLed at SYNERGY

So excited! I watched it in the 80s and got my 17 yr old daughter hooked on it now. She’s excited too, can’t wait!

  • Beauty

    This is AWESOME news!!!!

  • Staciejaxx&Lonny

BEST NEWS EVER!!!! That oh so catchy opening song, Jem’s beautiful pink look from the hair to the dress, her so so pretty and stylish band members.. I love love all of it. Kudos to the The Hub for doing this! It’s one thing to watch it on netflix or YouTube but on tv I’ll feel like I’m 8 again!! Now they need to add Galaxy High, Rainbow Brite, She-ra, thundercats, strawberry shortcake, ducktales, and many more.. The 80s were the heyday for cartoons !

    • Katja

I’ve watched a ton of She-Ra and He-Man on youtube. It’s still totally fun.

      • Sam

QUBO channel regularly airs He-Man and She-Ra around 11 p.m. central. Kids’ shows during the day, awesome 80s cartoons at night.

  • Jen P.

Ahhhh! I loved Jem! My favorite was the drummer with blue hair. I had star earrings that looked very similar to Jem’s. I still remember part of that theme song too.

  • D’s Advocate

It’ll be fun to watch once or twice.

  • Amy

I had the doll. She was so much cooler than all my Barbie dolls combined.
On a side note, does anyone remember the episode where some kids did drugs and tried to jump out the window and fly? Definitely a precursor to the infamous Saved by the Bell episode where Jessie Spano is on drugs.

  • Kat_chu_later

I owned all the dolls and cassettes! I have actually watched some episodes on You Tube…I love Jem!
