'Hey Dude' to finally get released on DVD. Now hurry up and get 'Salute Your Shorts' and 'Legends of the Hidden Temple' out there, too!

Hey-Dude

“It’s a little wild and a little strange/When you make your home down on the range/Start your horse and come along/But you can’t get a ride if you can’t hold on.” If you don’t know the rest of these lyrics to this you’d might as well stop reading (and really analyze what you were doing with your time from 1989 to 1991), but for everyone else who understands the importance of staying away from those “man eatin’ jack rabbits and that killer cacti”: Hey Dude is finally coming to DVD!

For anyone who grew up in the late ’80s and early ’90s (that had cable…or at least went to their friends’ houses who did), watching Nickelodeon shows like Hey Dude was as an important rite of passage as owning a Skip-It and ruining your parents carpet with Gak. Now, for the first time, the folks at Nick are letting us relive a piece our childhood by releasing the first season of Hey Dude on DVD. While it doesn’t come out until July 19, Amazon is allowing nostalgic pop culture nerds (now don’t you go ruining this, hipsters!) to pre-order the 2-disc DVD now (for just $13.99, yay! No commentary, boo!)

There’s no doubt the wacky adventures of Mr. Ernst and the rest of the gang at the Bar None Ranch are going to seem terribly outdated, but that will, if anything, make it all the more charming. And I don’t know about you, but there are still some episodes I have legitimately been longing to re-watch for years. Remember the one where Melody (oh, hi, Christine Taylor!) and Ted (David Lascher, who everyone had a crush on, pictured right with Joe Torres, a.k.a. Danny Lightfoot) return to the ranch after being sick and think a murder is being planned, but really their friends were just practicing for the upcoming murder mystery show? Brilliant! Humor, suspense, this episode had everything. And now I get to watch it all over again.

Of course, it’s no surprise that Generation Y has been longing for this nostalgia for quite some time. Just last month, TeenNick heard our call and announced exclusively to EW that they would be airing ’90s favorites like Clarissa Explains It All, Kenan & Kel, Rugrats, The Amanda Show, All That, and The Adventures of Pete & Pete. (The third season of the latter show needs to hurry up and get on DVD!) In fact, there’s an entire ’90s television library just waiting to be filled: There’s still The Legends of the Hidden Temple, Guts, Double Dare, and, of course, Salute Your Shorts (which I must reluctantly admit I loved slightly more than Hey Dude. It had “fart” in the theme song. I was 7. Leave me alone).

Until then, fellow 90’s enthusiasts, we can just count down the days until we can spend another summer at the Bar None Ranch. You know, for old time’s sake.

What about you, PopWatchers? Are you equally stoked that Hey Dude is moseying on over to DVD? Which episode are you most excited to watch again? What other ’90s Nick shows would you like to see get the DVD treatment as well? Let us know in the comments section below!

EW, I thought it was “start your horse and come along”–not House. Get along little dogies!

    • A Star IS born

Nick has always been the better kids network. iCarly is currently the best on now – though it needs more Jennette McCurdy, Jerry Trainor, and Nathan Kress (oddly enough Miranda Cosgrove is the weak link on the show – not funny at all). The one 90s show I would love to see on dvd is not Nickelodeon’s but on NBC: “Brotherly Love” with the Lawrence brothers, it was genuinely hilarious

OMG yes! They used to play repeats on Disney and I loved that show!

    • LOL

      Never heard of this.

  • Bmospr04

Where is My Brother and me? GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Punch

    • Leslie

YESSS!!! That broke me up laughing. “A’right now! GOOO punch!”

  • mickey

I just remember when Christine Taylor and the others got into a dessert food fight with Christine getting both a chocolate cake and cream pie right in the face. Loved that.

I also remember the infamous pie fight between Heidi Lucus and Venus (something) from Salute Your Shorts. Absolutely classic.

      Melody!

      • mickey

        Melody? What does that mean?

      • Susan

Melody was Christine Taylor’s character’s name.

  • Bueller

“Hey Dude” before “Are You Afraid of the Dark?” You’ve got to be kidding me!

    • Chelsea

I think they actually have released AYAOTD on DVD, but of course, it became out of print before I realized that fact! I LOVED that show. I still think it was one of the best shows of the 90s, for people of all ages, really.

    • brandinb

The entire series Are You Afraid of the Dark? has already been released. You can still purchase them through Amazon marketplace, but they’re so rare now that they are VERY expensive. I have the first three seasons (which are the best IMO).

Gen Y???? I’m Gen X, and was young enough to watch this show! I grew up on Nickelodeon! Ok, so I’m at the tail end of Gen X, but still. I’m a big 90’s nostalgia freak, but I probably won’t buy this. It is good to know it’s available just in case I get really nostalgic and sentimental for my childhood, though.

    • MelindaB

This was part of my kids’ childhood (well, my older kids) and I’m nostalgic for it. I would love to catch the 90s Nick shows again.

  • kellen

i’m most excited for the halloween episode where lucy i believe, or maybe danny, tells a ghost story and ted says he’s not scared, but once everyone starts disappearing, he freaks out. that, and the episode when melody falls down the well. good times, good times.

  • megan

gosh that brings back memories…yes huffy up and bring back all the other old school Nick shows!

  • Carly

I wish they would release Space Cases, or at least have it on Netflix or something. I seem to be one of the few that remembers that show… it was my fave!!

    • AC

To Carly — I loved Space Cases! One of my favorite shows and I was bummed it got canceled before anything was ever really resolved.

I watched Salute Your Shorts way more than Hey, Dude. Come to DVD!

    • Nina

I adored Space Cases. Such a cute foray into Sci-Fi. Memories…

    • Krystal

      space cases was the shiiiiiiiiiiiiiit

  • Sara

I just have to say that my parents’ carpet was the same color as Gak, so my brother and I were in the clear when we dropped it! Loved Hey Dude, but agree that Salute Your Shorts needs to be next!

  • Karate Pants

I would just love to see them bring back Double Dare – NOT on DVD, but as a show.

  • J

    SKIP IT

    SKIP IT

DO RUN, DO JUMP, DO HOP HOP

  • JDean

Screw “Hey Dude”! Real ’90s kids only want the Holy Triumvirate of Nickelodeon’s heydey: “All That”, “Kenan & Kel”, and “My Brother and Me” (GOOOOO PUNCH!)!

  • Monica

What about “The Tomorrow People” Or “Fifteen.”

    • jeannette

I can get behind a DVD of Fifteen! Also, “Welcome Freshman!”
