Rebecca Black's 'Friday': Will someone please think of the children?!

Kids say the darndest things. Maybe your grumpy ol’ ears didn’t embrace the “Friday” phenomenon, but you’re not a tween. Actually, it turns out tweens pretty much despised Rebecca Black’s homemade video, too. At least they say they do. In an online series titled, “Kids React to Viral Videos,” a handful of youngsters were forced to watch the “Friday” video (below). Not Clockwork Orange style, but it sort of felt that way. Morgan, 6, and Emma, 8, were enthusiastic fans, but once the ages reached double-digits, the criticisms turned cruel. “It was entertaining because it was terrible,” said Shannon, 10. “Who wants to make a bunch of money off something that people hate?” asked Athena, 13, whose school plays the tune over its intercom on Fridays. “She’s tormenting little children when you listen to her eerie witch voice,” said William, 10.

It’s easy to be cruel, of course, but Black’s meanest detractors also illuminate the secret to her song’s success. “She’s so bad,” harps Lia, 14. “Oh gosh, I’ve seen this video so many times.” Exactly.

This video was hysterical. I loved the kids’ reactions.

And people cough*Parents Television Council*cough think that kids today are misguided by pop culture!!!Well obviously not, these kids right here look pretty smart. *praise the Lord*
Thank you EW. This video is really refreshing! And that “Friday” song is definitely ridiculous. Rebecca is 13 or 14, doesn’t she write essays at her school? If she had put little effort on the lyrics, the song would have been quite good. Oh well.

      • Gary

        She didn’t write the lyrics.
        True story.

I want these kids to run the country. I trust them. And eww, their schools play “Friday” on fridays? That’s messed up, public/private schools of America! But that little girl that talked about the pig dessert = precious. About the random rapper: “Does his mom know he’s doing that?”

  • stef

I love how one girl compared it to a dessert called “pig supreme.”

  • Hoobi

Excellent stuff! That was really smart and insightful what these kids had to say. And so true!

  • Trixie

I love the “Kids React” videos. I think Morgan is hysterical and bizarre. Most of the kids seem pretty precocious. I think the videos are fun.

  • Louise

Jake was hilarious! That kid should have his own show!

  • Michael

The song is just so awful, everytime that it comes on, I just want to break my radio!

  • AK

That little girl who really enjoyed the song was adorable! And I loved the boy who referenced the conflict in Libya. What a smartypants!

  • ChrisV

That was pure comic gold. Sometimes, kids just say it better than adults can.

  • Cate

Wow, these kids are really articulate.

As a side note, this song may be horrible, but I went to a dance party over the weekend where they blasted “Friday” and an entire room full of drunk twenty-somethings got really into it and knew all the words. No one can escape Rebecca Black!

    • Les

Yeah, pretty sure these are coached child actors. They were regurgitating every hipster snob comment about that video way too effortlessly.

  • LisaMama

Quote from my 12-year-old son: “That’s worse than Miley Cyrus, and that’s saying a lot.”

  • Blank

The video is its own parady, that is why it is so good.

  • The Former 786

My 3-year-old and 1-year-old love this song. I think it’s because it uses simple words and teaches them the days of the week.

The 6-year-old in this video also liked it, so there’s probably some sort of age threshold. Maybe 8 is the cutoff point.

Also, hate all you want on the song, but that Rebecca Black girl seems really down-to-earth and nice in all the interviews she’s done. Hate Kanye, Not Rebecca.

  • Trish

“What happened?! He’s not even a teenager!” and “somehow, everything is Rebecca Black’s fault” are my favorite quotes.

Fantastic video. Those kids are wonderful critics; I especially loved the little girl. Hey, EW, please give them a regular column and watch your traffic surge!
