Stephen King's 'The Dark Tower': Who should join Javier Bardem on the quest?

the-dark-tower

For months, Javier Bardem has been in talks for the role of Roland the Gunslinger in the big-screen version of The Dark Tower, and sources close to the production say he is just weeks away from finalizing the deal. But with that key component in place for Ron Howard’s adaptation of Stephen King’s fantasy epic, which will span three feature films and two TV miniseries, it’s time to take a closer look at who should play some of the other key roles in Roland’s ka-tet (King’s word for the team joined by fate for the quest).

The series is made up of seven books — so far — with an eighth novel, The Wind Through the Keyhole, planned for publication next year, and set between his previous fourth and fifth books (Wizard and Glass and Wolves of the Calla). The thing is already written, so smart money is that screenwriter Akiva Goldsman, who won the Oscar for Howard’s A Beautiful Mind, is already factoring it into the adaptation. There are also scores of characters in the series, some threading through other King works, so we can’t touch on them all… though, maybe Anthony Hopkins can be persuaded to reprise his role as psychic “breaker” Ted Brautigan from Hearts in Atlantis?

Apart from such colorful side characters, there is the trio that makes up the core team of heroes, Roland’s ka-tet, established in the second novel, The Drawing of the Three. Roland draws them into his Mid-World from various points on the space-time continuum, so who should Howard pull in for his multi-platform epic adaptation? Some of my suggestions below:

– Eddie Dean, the well-meaning but troubled junkie, whom an oracle tells Roland has been “possessed by a demon called Heroin,” in a clever perspective twist on our world. Once he is pulled into Mid-World, Dean becomes a loyal but wisecracking sidekick, offering his own perspective twist on these new surroundings, and helping cutting through some of the mystical mumbo-jumbo with the signature directness of a street kid from Brooklyn.

Casting: A sense of humor is a must, as well as a look that, let’s say, has a certain “lived in” texture. Eddie is a character with rough edges. Patton Oswalt has the comedic chops, and he shows an impressive, powerful, and darkly dramatic side in Big Fan and the upcoming Young Adult, but no one would accuse him of having a “heroin chic” figure. But part of Eddie’s appeal is that he’s not the guy anyone would have expected to take on a heroic mantle.

If you want to go the more traditional leading man route, however, perhaps Justified‘s Timothy Olyphant (whom some would have liked for Roland) would be the right choice. Before commenters crucify me for deigning to suggest someone as far outside the box as Oswalt, I could also see someone like Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who’s the right age, can do comedy as well as drama, and can adopt the lean, rangy appearance of a true scumbag while still maintaining an uncanny charm. (See Hesher, opening next month. Seriously — go see it.)

Susannah, a black woman from 1964 whose legs are missing below the knee after a subway accident. She also has split personality disorder after suffering head trauma as a child. (Both incidents were not accidents, but an attempt to kill her.) Once again, she’s nobody’s idea of a familiar female hero, but her handicaps make her all the more badass. It’s one thing to travel from Mad Men-era New York to a dusty, decimated alternate dimension that has “moved on” toward the apocalypse, but try doing that with your mind in fragments and the inability to walk.

Casting: King himself has said, “I always kind of see Angela Bassett in my mind’s eye,” when writing about Susannah, which is as good a casting suggestion as any, except that at 52, she’s perhaps too far out of the age range at this point. Avatar‘s Zoe Saldana has proven herself to be more than up to the task dramatically, and has the athleticism necessary to pull of a character who struggles so much physically to survive. She’s also well-versed in the kind of special-effects work necessary to create not just this character, but the whole Dark Tower world in general.

Sanaa Lathan also has the strong screen presence to pull off the role. She battled otherworldly beasts in Alien vs. Predator (okay, admittedly not the most dramatically sophisticated film) but she’s also in Steven Soderbergh’s upcoming thriller Contagion and earned a Tony nomination for the Broadway revival of A Raisin in the Sun.

One outside the box name to consider: Octavia Spencer, soon to break big in The Help. She’s not a lean, mean, slow-mutant killing machine like some of these other action-oriented actresses, but she’s got attitude and a half and an undeniable charm. In The Help, she’s Minny Jackson, a defiant, outspoken housemaid who is somewhat ahead of her own time. I’m not sure I can picture her sitting on a guy’s shoulders doing this, but we’re just brainstorming, people.

Jake, the kid. This is a tough one. I’m not sure how you keep this child a child for the full span of years necessary to finish this project (cast Andy Milonakis?). But given that Jake exists in different dimensions and different lives (“there are other worlds than these,” he reassures Roland as one such life is about to end) maybe it’s possible to switch actors. The face changes, but the soul of Jake remains the same. Or maybe they’ll be shot fast enough that the aging of the character matches the aging of the actor. In any case, the father-son relationship that forms between the boy and Roland is a key component of the books, making this one of the most important casting decisions.

Casting: It’s got to be an unknown, right? Ten years ago, maybe The Sixth Sense‘s Haley Joel Osment would be the shoo-in for this role, but I’m not sure there is a prominent young actor today in his very early teens who might be considered a natural for a part like this. Josh Hutcherson from The Kids Are All Right, now playing Peeta in The Hunger Games, is too old, and obviously occupied anyway. If I were Ron Howard, I’d be asking J.J. Abrams if I could check out an early cut of Super 8, because the lead kid in that, Joel Courtney, has a lot of promise.

All right. Have at it. What are your thoughts and choices? Feel free to go deeper into the character bench, and get creative!

small note: Wolves of Calla is the fifth book, not Song of Susannah

    • Cygnus

Maybe he could reteam Zoe Saldana and Sam Worthington as Susanna and Eddie.

My preference for Eddie would be a James Franco type.

The part of Jake will be hard because the filming will take place over years, but Jake has to stay around 11-12 years old. Can’t afford an actor that will hit puberty between films. Perhaps there’s a filming strategy that might film most of Jake’s parts at once with one actor for the whole series. Kinda unique and a logistical nightmare, but might be neat.

I hope they do some creative casting for Walter/Randall.

      • Cygnus

Too bad there are no roles for yojng white girls. Hollywood has them in spades.

      • AudreyB

The kid to play Jake must be young, small. Somewhere around 10/11. No more than that. He’s got to be a strong actor as Jake is key to the films.

      • Jace

Serena Reeder for Susannah? she was in Get rich

      • Matt W

I just saw a picture of Serena and she def could fit the part physically.

      • morozco

Zoe Saldana is the only one I ever see in my mind when I read DT…she’s beautiful (as Susannah is and should be), but she has a tenacity and strength to her as well…she’s physical, and has the dramatic acting chops to pull off all personalities from Detta to Mia…

      • Susan

I’d like Lauren Hill or Tara from True Blood as Susannah

      • susan

Hasn’t anyone seen Tara from True Blood?

    • Anthony Breznican

      My bad. Thanks B.

    • Tim

I’ve always believed that Jason Lee should play Eddie in the movie(s). He’s a powerful actor, but really nails the smart-ass type consistently.

      • Frank Vincent

Jason Lee would be awsome for Eddie. I invisioned Viggio Mortenson for Roland and Jada Pikett for Sussanna; but i dont think they’ll go that route.

      • Jessica @ work

I like Jason Lee as Eddie! Always joking, slightly greasy… LOL. Maybe too old, though. I can’t see this Javier guy as Roland, though; having big trouble with that.

      • morozco

While Jason Lee is an ok choice, I just don’t see him as Eddie…we need someone a little more strung out (and while they can toy w/ his age a bit), I contest he should be closer to the 20-something Eddie we know and love…Jason Lee? Hmmm, 10 years ago maybe…too old, weak actor at least for this part…my pick like others’ have said…SAM ROCKWELL! He’s a little older than Dean too, but PERFECT!

    • cistar

Michael Fassbender as Roland, Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Eddie, Zoe Saldana as Susannah, for bad guys, Javier Bardem as Walter O’Dim, Tom Wlaschiha-game of thrones assasin as the man in black (1st book, the sorcerer)

  • Matt W

Oswalt isn’t a bad idea overall, but he is too short and squat to play Eddie.

    Levitt would obviously be awesome.
Zoe as Susannah is also a greta idea.

To go along with the Jake idea, I wouldn’t mind if they were ALL unknowns. Let Javier star as Mr. Deschain because as much as this story is about the Ka-Tet, it’s focus is Roland finding The Dark Tower.

Hopkins is an awesome suggestion. I also pictured Pete Postlethwaite as Callahan but that sadly can’t happen anymore.

    • Ted

No, Patton Oswalt is an unbelievably stupid casting suggestion, probably the worst casting suggestion I’ve read. Never mind that’s he 20 years too old to play the role, but he’s got no serious acting chops, and has no physicality whatsoever.

  • Charlie

Aaron Paul from breaking Bad would make a spot on Eddie. Spot f#$%ing on.

    • B

      agreed. Whole heartedly.

    • Dave

100% Aaron Paul. He’s born for that role. But then we’d lose him on Breaking Bad, and I’m not willing to see that happen!

    • Derric

I’ve thought Ben Foster would be a killer Eddie.

      • M. Powell

        Nice call.

    • ClearlyDemented

      Goosebumps. Perfect.

    • timmer

      Great call there.

    • Cazart

      PERFECT.

    • Sean L.

Aaron Paul *needs* to be Eddie. The only other person I could think of is Ryan Reynolds…he could get the humor without a problem, but my only concern would be if he’d be any good at the darker side of the character. Paul has both. I’d even be willing to give up his presence on Breaking Bad to see him be Eddie Dean in the movies.

      • Susan

Ryan Renolds could do it, everytime I think about it I just can’t come up with anyone better

    • morozco

While Sam Rockwell is my first choice, Aaron Paul is actually a damned fine second choice IMO.

    • Damer

Yes. that would be awesome, and im sure his breaking bad career will be over by the time he starts DT. Yeah Mr. White, Yeah science!

  • Jason

How about Noah Ringer, for the Kid? Noah played Aang in The Last Airbender.

    • morozco

      FUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK NO. lol

    • M. Powell

      No. Jake was blonde.

  • CB

Javier Bardem is a horrible choice to play Roland. So fix that first then worry about the rest of the cast

    • ihatescreennames

I completely agree; WHY is he getting to play Roland? I could see him in a supporting role, but I have a hard time having confidence he can take on Roland and do justice to the part.

Tim Olyphant (sp?) is a MUCH better choice for Roland.

      • CB

Tim Olyphant is a great choice to play Roland. I wish they would just do the whole series as an animated series on HBO or something. These films are going to be a disaster.

      • Jennifer

Javier is a terrible choice! I think Ed Harris would nail it!

      • morozco

Javier is a horrible choice, agreed. Olyphant is horrible as well. Need someone with more wisdom, more torment, less simple psychotic intensity (though a little of that is needed too)…but he should have a deeper, quiet intensity and gravity.

    • myscreennamehere

I agree! Am I the only one who pictured Clint Eastwood while reading the books? Yes, I’m aware he’s a little too old to play the part now, but you know what I’m getting at: Javier Bardem is a good actor, but HE IS NO ROLAND.

      • Kevinkrypto

You pictured eastwood (just like I always have) because he was part of the inspiration for Roland himself.

      • M. Powell

A young Cint Eastwood would be perfect. I think that’s the image I had of Roland when I read them.

      • Joanne

You nailed it on the head there.look im no Clint Eastwood fan, infact I cant stand the man,but as I read the Gunslinger and King described Rolands character the face that came to mind and stuck was Eastwoods!

      • Susan

Xavier is a good actor, he could pull it off. I always had Sam Elliot in mind though, although I think he would be too old now also. Although he ‘d be good as one of the older characters in young Rolands days

      • Susan

Has anyone thought of Ed Burns, he could be Roland or Eddie. Ed there’s a part there for you mate, somewhere …

    • Lori

I agree, Roland is long and lean and Javier is too buff. I would cast someone like Depp or Adrien Brody, more Roland types. I like the idea of Franco as Eddie, maybe Pinkett-Smith for Susannah…

      • Frank

And, most important of all, Javier does NOT have blue eyes! It’s not a trivial detail, these terrible cold steel blue eyes are so often referred to in the series, that I just don’t understand how Javier was deemed as suitable for the role!

    • M. Powell

Agree completely. Have they read the books?

      • Susan

ohhh ok ya got me, but there are always blue contacts

  • chata

    PLEASE JAMES MCAVOY AS EDDIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Diana

      Yes

  • Npkuips

Susanna should totally be played by Oprah Jimfrey! Charley Sheen as Eddie and an unknown for Jake. Man in Black should be also be played by Javier Bardem.

  • frank

how about jeffrey dean morgan as roland!!!! far better chioce than javier!! as for the rest… tim o would ake a great eddie.. sussanah im undecided.. jake could be the gay brother on shameless… not too old… still looks younger than he is… and can act

  • Npkuips

I would actually be really happy with Callum Keith Renne as Eddie…he would be very good.

  • AB

Aaron Paul would be perfect as Eddie Dean. Don’t believe me? Check out any episode from season 3 of Breaking Bad.

  • gusmantx7757

Roland: Javier Bardem is ok but prefer Christian Bale
Eddie: Ron Paul or Ryan Gosling
    Sussanah: Zoe Saldana
Jake: Kodi Smit-McPhee (The Road, and Let Me In)

    • Dayna

Christian Bale seems a little too young (going by the images I had in my mind as I read, so this is totally subjective) for Roland. But I could totally see him as Eddie.

      • Collins Russell

These movies are going to ruin the whole mystique of The Dark Tower. Call me a little selfish, but I’m really not looking forward to this at all. We’re all going to go from being a part of a small club of people, who enjoy recommending a brilliant read; to a bunch of jaded nerds who have to whine about how the films have ruined everything, that they just aren’t as good as the books, and we’ll be stuck defending our position (quite frustrated)for years to come. we’ll feel like our souls have been molested when we see the Burger King add campaigns, Bardem’s stupid looking mug on our cups (holding a rose). It might be different if it wasn’t going to be a giant, overly polished Hollywood production. I would have preferred that these movies were handled through a more, highly financed, independent avenue. With a real visionary director, who has his own trademark style. A cast of unknowns, or little-knowns (truly great actors all the same). Perhaps a fairly big name with some indie-cred for Roland and, perhaps, even Eddie. For Roland though, you have to cast someone with some grit. Someone who can really pull of the rugged old west thing, which this guy Bardem (what is he, Puertorican or Arabic? He’s clearly not a white guy)has no chance of pulling off. I personally believe that Daniel Day Lewis possesses all the right qualities for the part. I could at least rest easy with that choice. Hey, you people making completely ridiculous suggestions like Christian Bale or Daniel Craig… really guys? Hasn’t the world seen enough of Bale lately. The only thing this guy ever did was American Psycho and The Fighter. The magnitude of this role, is not within either one of those dudes range. Daniel Craig is good at looking tough, and that’s about it. We need more than a look, for this part people. You can call me bitter because I am truly that, about this whole damned thing. I’m filled with a real sense of dread and contempt about it. Ron Howard is a candy ass Holly Wood slut.

      • Collins Russell

Change of heart and i messed up on his ethno he’s actually spanish his accent ain’t that bad in ‘No country for old men’ besides Roland was described as having some sort of weird slur/accent anyways. He has that tall rugged look that would be perfect for Roland and I have complete faith in Ron Howard

    • pisces19

      I’ll second Kodi Smit-McPhee.

  • Aaron

I know he’s a little old, but I don’t care. Sam Rockwell was born to play Eddie Dean. Bardem is an interesting Roland.

    • Andy

Sam Rockwell would be a GREAT choice.

  • Dicazi

Jake is such an important, difficult role that I wouldn’t mind if they fudged a little and cast an older, mid-teen actor.

  • Steve

David Blue from Stargate Universe as Eddie Dean

  • Daniel

I think that this film adaption is just going to destroy this saga. And Bardem is not really good for playing Roland
