This Week's Cover: Robert Pattinson Moves Beyond 'Twilight'

Twilight-fans, take heart: Robert Pattinson is every bit as good-looking and thick-maned as he appears onscreen. But don’t confuse him with his brooding characters — the 24-year-old actor is surprisingly open, chatty, and quick to laugh. Pattinson talked with EW last week about his upcoming film Water for Elephants (in theaters April 22), in which he plays a traveling-circus veterinarian who falls for the show’s star attraction, played by Reese Witherspoon. He also discussed what his future might look like once he’s finished with Twilight. “You can never really predict what an audience wants or how to maintain a career,” he says, “other than doing what you think is cool.” But, Pattinson laughs, “Generally, what I think is cool is what everyone else hates.”

Filming for the final two installments of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn will wrap next month, and there’s one thing Pattinson says he won’t miss — the contact lenses he’s had to wear to play Edward. “My God, I’ll be glad to see the last of those,” he says. “I actually want to get some kind of plastic explosive. I want to reanimate them into something so I can kill them. It’s so embarrassing for me — after so many years, it’s still a process every single morning. Everybody else has figured out how to do it, and then there’s two people holding me down because I can’t do it myself.”

For more on Robert Pattinson and Water for Elephants, including how the beloved book was made into a movie, pick up the new issue of Entertainment Weekly, on stands Friday, March 25.

    Reese is so cute

    • what a joke

Reese Witherspoon is phony and fugly.

      • Puh-lease

EW must be desperate to sell some magazines. Thousands of dopey broads will buy it for the cover alone.

      • Liz Lemon

This one is going straight to the recycle bin. I’m not a fan of either of them. They’re both such a snooze-fest.

      • Felicia

Oooh, you’re so superior, Puh-lease! I bet you have never bought a copy of Maxim or FHM, right?

      • @Felicia

There’s a difference between having a subscription and running out to buy an issue at the store.
        Read between the lines, dummy.

      • imurpusher

Holy Photoshop Batman!!!! I don’t subscribe anymore and pictures like this are why. Water for Elephants isn’t tracking well. Reese Witherspoon is over. RPatz never began. Francis Lawrence stay away from the Houdini biopic. Razzies for all!!!!

      • @liz lemon

well don’t subscribe to a mag. then. easy as that.

      • @imurpusher

where did you see that wfe isnt tracking well? i haven’t seen anything for it yet. i’m sure you will feel better when transformers comes out.

      • Lil

Lol, if you’re going to use a phrase like “not tracking well” make sure you know what it means, know what industry sources are used to make that kind of forecast, and know that in this case you’re very wrong.

      • Dr Linus

The fact that you call him “RPatz” (because it’s so commonly used) goes against you saying he “never began.”

      • Lauren

        touche Dr. Linus!

  • Cris

I commented last week that after putting Nathan Fillion on last week’s cover, it was probably an attempt to appease us geek fanboys who were well aware there were likely 35 more Twilight-related covers coming in the near future … I just didn’t think it would be THIS soon (and if you DON’T think this guy is on the cover specifically to get the Twitards to buy it, I’ve got a bridge to sell you).

    • Elizabeth

Yeesh… its a magazine cover. Take a deep breath, it will be OK.

      Hair looks good, Robert…

      • ew-bot

      • MB

Yeah, this is how magazines are sold.

    • L

Oh, boo hoo. Another Twilight cover and not something that appeals to my interests. Waaaah.

      Cry me a river, buddy.

      • lala44

where the Heck did you see anything, what has to do with Twilight on this Cover. Its the same Actor but otherwise he doesn’t even look like the Vampire. You people are so full ofd Crap ..And WfE will be awesome..

    • carolyn

Not a Twihard, and i’m buying it for Rob. So what does that make me???

      • @carolyn

      • carolyn

LOL at the Horny!!! and somewhat true too;) But you know what, Rob’s filming 40 min. from me, and i ain’t stalking…I’m what you call a normal “horny’ fan…I lost my husband 5 years ago, so i am allowed, and it’s safe;) Rob really helped my cope, if that makes any sense. He became a sweet distraction from my bitter reality, and i am grateful to him.

      • crispy

        Visually impaired.

      • carolyn

Nice comment “visually impared” do you want to add another sarcastic one, if i tell you i also watched my husband die with our daughter there??? Your turn…

      • crispy

Wow. There are just some things better discussed with your therapist than with strangers on the internet.

      • @carolyn

carolyn, that’s very sad and I’m sorry that you’re suffering BUT that is really TMI for an entertainment website comment board. Really. You need to talk to someone about that.

      • carolyn

Please just ignore me than. It does not bother me to talk about it here, because Rob became a wonderful distraction in a difficult life. Sorry for whatever i’ve said, to make you say to me what you did.

      • UGH

      • KrissieE

Carolyn, I understand completely and I don’t think we need a therapist to say so. Thanks for sharing.

      • carolyn

Thank you. I hope you do not mean you have gone through hard times yourself, if so, i understand completely…Bless you, and take care!!!

      • miss k

Oh boy this comment section just got real awkward. And carolyn, I’m sorry for your loss. I understand, I just lost someone close to me as well.

      • ew-bot

someone who appreciates a good looking man. reese looks like she’s thinking the same thing. like “wow, how is that even fair?” ha!

      • cathyw

It makes you a Robert Pattinson fan! I enjoy seeing pictures of him without Kristin Stewart for a change.

    • TayMads

I know it’s says “Beyond Twilight” on the cover but in all actuality this isn’t about Twilight. It’s about his new movie Water For Elephants. That is why Reese is on the cover. Just saying.

    • Stacy

It’s not a Twilight related article

    • J

A magazine cover… picked so people would buy it? Never….

    • Liz Lemon

It has the word, “Twilight” in huge letters and that’s not even the film they’re promoting. Kind of pathetic really.

      • miss k

Well EW is a business so I’d assume their decisions are based on profit. Not pathetic. Just smart.

      • @Liz

i can why your last name is lemon.

      • Jenny

Yes, I noticed that. Pattinson clearly ain’t seeling the magazine covers anymore.

    • Liz

Babe, this isn’t a Twilight cover. It’s a Water for Elephants cover. It just happens to mention Twilight because it stars the guy from Twilight.

    • Melissa Lee

Yeah, they undid whatever cred they earned back with Nathan’s cover by following up so quickly with another Robert Pattinson cover. I read “Water for Elephants.” Believe me, it doesn’t deserve this much attention.

  • Derek

Even though the cover has Reese Witherspoon, I have a feeling this issue will be less about Water for Elephants (which I am very excited about, having read the book twice) and more about the crapfest that is Twilight. But I guess you gotta give the fans what they want…

    • Steph

Yeah, I feel almost bad that Reese, an Oscar winner, is placed in the back like some prop.
But yeah, gotta give those twilight crazed fans what they want…whatever gets EW a quick buck.

      • Bella

The interview is with Rob, not with Reese. That’s why he’s in the front.

      • carolyn

Reese is still an Oscar winner, every bit as beautiful and talented as when she won. She loved doing this movie with Rob, and loved Rob…I am a Rob and Reese fan. they are so much alike. He is such a gentleman, and she a lady…They probably did disagree with the cover. Rob wanted her in the front with him looking adoringly, and she wanted Rob in the front with her looking adoringly, guess she won, and i can promise you that happened…In the end though EW sees $$$, that’s their job. I do thank them though for the issue.

      • Melissa

@Bella: THANK YOU! If Derek and Steph would have read the front of the magazine cover it says “Rob on romancing Reese..”. You can clearly see that the article is about Rob. Also, why don’t people wait to read the article before they guess what it may or may not be about! I’ve never seen so many haters before….

    • carolyn

I’m a fan of Rob, not Twilight…Everyone that likes Rob, does not have to like Twilight…He is so much more than, what’s his name, Edward?!?

      • Steph

…sure you’re not a Twi-hard? I randomly clicked back on here and all I see if your name all over the comments, lol.

      • carolyn

Because i like Rob, my kids like Twilight.

      • mary land

You are so right. It is the man behind the performance.

  • Karate Pants

    • crispy

His hair does look awfully cute in this movie. Too bad about the face though. Hah!

      • carolyn

Why don’t you go to a site about someone you think is good looking then…Why come on here and make a F*up remark like that…You may be beautiful to look at, can’t tell from here, but from hear i can tell your inner beauty may be lacking or you just would not say that.

      • crispy

carolyn, honey, I was joking with my friend, Karate Pants. Tone down the crazy.

      • carolyn

If i’m crazy, how could i tone it down. crazy people would have trouble doing that?!?

      • carolyn

Sorry for my uncalled for comment, when you were only just commenting to a “friend’, my bad.

      • carolyn

Please forgive my comment, when you were just commenting back to someone else.

      • crispy

No worries. KP and I have a long history of chatting about Twilight.

    • mary

      I just became a twi-fan. And I am a grandmother. I think Rob is a fine actor.

      • mary

These movies have helped me through my on going battle with late stage breast cancer. I guess it is how we each precieve things to be. But the movies and the performers make my life a little more pleasant.

  • Anitamargarita

So: I am assuming this had already gone to press, threfore your Elizabeth Taylor tribute issue along with her cover shot will be next week? Because if not, brace yourselves EW, for some major haters.

    • tigger851

relax, there will be a tribute issue soon for elizabeth taylor….she just died yesterday, how was ew going to anticipate her passing……..and it already went to press cuz it comes out tomorrow on newstands…..put your thinking cap on

      • Anitamargarita

        Isn’t that what I said?

      • Flyer

No, Anitamargarita, you asked a question, and tigger851 answered it.

      • Grammar police.

Her question was whether their would be forthcoming, not whether the magazine had already gone to print. That was, in fact a statement. In this case, I can use my power for good. You are acquitted. Anitamargarita.

      • duh

Grammar police you used the wrong ‘their’ (should have used ‘there’) so your license is revoked. Me = Winning!

      • oh dear

Just had to say that Grammar Police used the right ‘their’, they just forgot the ‘s (theirs) since they were speaking in the possessive

      • REAL Grammar Police

Actually ‘theirs’ implies more than one person and Liz Taylor is ONE person. I think Grammar Police meant to write ‘Her question was whether ‘there’ would be (a cover) forthcoming…’

    • Jane

Most major magazines go to press Tuesday evening, early Wednesday to get the subscribers copies in the mail. Ms. Taylor’s death occured to late to scrap already planned covers. Next week will give people plenty of time to do it right instead of throwing something together for this week.

      • Dyavan

It is her!I love this woman. I watched her tear up this fool the other day. Her Modern Standard Arabic is csytral clear by the way. Even an amateur speaker like me can understand her without translation. The other fellow sounds provincial and uneducated by comparison, frequently lapsing into slurred dialect only a native speaker could understand. She speaks like a terrorist speaks! In the same slow, precise, MSA cadences that, say, Quadaffi uses when he wants his words to be understood across the Mid East. Here’s to hoping she succeeds!

    • Bill

I agree with you when I first read it, then reading the thread, I see how timing was everything. Having said all that: EW should have commented that a tribute cover was in the works.

    • Kisha

EW has already written a note at the end of all the posts on Elizabeth Taylor there will be more on her death in the April 1st issue.

  • rocknmovies

Looking forward to WFE. Rob will make the haters eat their own shyte.

    • jared4ever

With classy supporters like you in his corner, how can he fail?

      • carolyn

How classy were you with your liz remark???

      • mary

    • Chris

That’s exactly the word I’d use to describe his acting.

  • alex

i like them both but find it hilarious that they chose a photo where it looks like she’s gazing adoringly at him..

    • tennisfan

I’m sure it’s not for this reason, but in actuality in the book his character is the main character, the protagonist of the story. While continuing to link anything Robert Pattinson with Twilight is obviously a marketing ploy, I’m going to look on the bright side and hope that his being in this movie will inspire the Twilight-readers to read the book, Water for Elephants, by Sara Gruen, which is excellent and extremely well-written. Maybe it will be a stepping stone for some young woment into the world of good literature.

      • L

I’m a Twilight fan and bought the book recently. I haven’t had a chance to read it yet, though.

Didn’t miss your slight slam to Twilight though. You aren’t that subtle.

      • kimmy

i love this book. i will be PISSED if they ruin it!

    • carolyn

She really does adore him, her words. So maybe you mind the cover more than she did…

    • carolyn

She does adore him, her words.

  • Joanne

Beautiful cover and can’t wait to see more picture of the elephant. Both Reese and Rob look stunning. Don’t get why they even had to mention Twilight on the cover. They’re promoting Water for Elephants. By the way, it’s a great book. I highly recommend it.

  • Chroma

Two weeks ago, they managed to find a way to stick Lost on the cover *again*. Now we get yet another Twilight-related cover (because folks, Water for Elephants would not warrant a cover without RP.)

Oh, EntWkly. Never change your newstand-buyer-hoaring ways. Meanwhile, it’s getting more and more difficult to renew the subscription I’ve had since 1992.

    • jodipo

… it IS an entertainment magazine. Isn’t newsstand buyer whoring kinda the point?

  • dee

Sometimes I want to hate on that Rob guy, but then you read an interview and he’s so funny you can’t help but like him.

Reanimate those contacts and kill them, buddy. lol.

  • Georgia

The cover looks great! I can’t wait for this film. Thanks EW. (as usual though, I can see some posters just can’t get over themselves)

  • jared4ever

Yeah, forget Liz Taylor, who the hell was she anyways. I want a real Hollywood star on the cover like…like…that dude from Twilight, Robert Pattinson. Thanks EW, you never disappoint. Unbelievable.

    • wut

are you serious? she died yesterday no magazines are gonna have her on the cover until nexty week

    • Inhale… Exhale…

Dude… she just died yesterday. Relax. They have to print these things DAYS in advance and this magazine is going to be on news stands tomorrow. Take a deep breath. You’re going to be ok.

    • carolyn

Lets not start hating on an icon now, it just makes you look worse than those that hate on Robert…I live be such a beautiful quote from a beautiful song…”In the end, only kindsness matters”-Jewel…So in the end hate will not hurt the ones you hate, only yourselves…

      • carolyn

        Something more inportant…inner beauty…

      • umm

Clearly jared4ever was being sarcastic. Please stop taking offense to every comment posted that you perceive as being insulting to those you support. Also.. it’s kind of insulting to Liz Taylor that you’d liken her fame to that of Robert Pattinson’s. I realize he’s a big star right now, but she is, as you say, a legend. They’re absolutely not the same thing.

      • jared4ever

        Thank you ummm. exactly right.

    • marie

With all your sarcasm you don’t seem to be that far from the truth lol.
Directors and interviewers already compared Rob to James Dean and young Marlon Brando and not always in a negative way. With this movie Water for Elephants his co-stars and other people in the business compare Rob to old Hollywood stars as Cary Grant, Gregory Peck… They say Rob has this old fashion Hollywood movie star in him and they know he can act. As EW says: he ‘acts’ his brooding characters as nobody else can, ’cause in real life he’s very funny, giggling, witty and…very intelligent. But for you it’s still too soon I think.
Liz Taylor will have her tribute, don’t panic.

  • Lena

I don’t understand Robert Pattinson’s appeal. He’s got a fugged-up face with that bent nose.

    • carolyn

      Something more inportant…inner beauty…

    • carolyn

it’s called inner beauty, great personality, and can usually be seen by those who have it…Makes for even more of a beaut outwardly.

      • Nene

Carolyn, he doesn’t just have inner beauty, he’s pretty damn gorgeous!

    • L

I don’t understand the allure of a lot of “stars”. So what?

      • carolyn

So why come on here than…I only like Robert, but i do not go onto articals, if the person does not interest me, especially to say so. I would not want to diss on another persons attraction.

    • Nene

In virtually every interview I’ve ever read, or have seen on tv, the interviewer gushes about how good-looking and beautiful Rob is in person. I’ve seen some unflattering photos, but let me tell you, he really is breathtakingly beautiful in person!

    • lala44

to bad you judge a person by his Face…oh well I ‘m sure you’re completely perfect…good for u

  • carolyn

I adore Robert, i do not adore Twilight, he has other wonderful movies, for those not in the know…I loved Liz, and cried all day, for she was a beautiful, funny, strong, very caring woman, and she will have her Tribute and be dearly missed…What is frustrating though, is that Robert too is beautiful, funny, not quit as strong-he’s to humble, and also very caring, people refuse to see this though, because of a damn movie, that was meant for enjoyment, not a hate fest. Brace yourself EW, you are going to have some major lovers…And PS “the fans” want Water For Elephants, as does Robert. He want’s so much to move on from Twilight…Please let him…This person is so beautiful on the inside, so intelligent, so witty, so sweet, a brilliant musician, writer, and yes, an amazing actor…Little Ashes, How To Be, Remember Me, The Haunted Airman…WFE and Rob are already recieving accolades from those who have worked with him, and those who have seen the screening…Bel Ami, is also receiving the same hype for his performance and the movie…Rob in the Cosmopolis lead was a vote of confidence from director David Cronenburg, and all Rob has wanted, that respect, parts like these he can now take because he likes them, and they will be offered to him..Liz had her haters in the beginning, but she proved them wrong. Rob will too. You cannot hate people you do not know, but what if you only ever hear wonderful, lovely things about them from those that do know them/met them/worked with them, and you watch or read interviews, where they themselves make you laugh so hard, are so humble, so gracious and charming, can you like them then. This is why i came to adore Rob, because it was so obvious that he was adoreable. different, refreshing, special…To me.

      AGREED 100% WELL DONE!!

    • Kate

You don’t know the guy- you’ve read interviews (obsessively apparently) and seen movies. You are obviously at liberty to defend his work but a 500 word rant on his stunning personality (which has not as of yet been particularly criticized in this thread) seems unwarranted.

      Chill out.

On another note, the cover is fabulous (though Reese probably should have been given a mention as well as she a) is also on the cover, b) looks stunning on said cover c) is a co-star in WFE– the movie they are currently promoting).

      • carolyn

Just passionate about a guy i know i do not know, did not mean it to come off as a rant. Just my feelings. sorry.

    • kimmy

ok, please don’t go comparing rob to elizabeth taylor. that woman had more talent and star power in her pinky finger than he ever will!

    • vic

ok, now i see why the man is afraid to buy a house

      • StewyFan

  • Jackie

I sympathize with him. People have been asking me if I’d consider getting contact lenses to replace my glasses for ages, and I would NEVER be able to put them in!

    • Nene

The contacts they wear in the Twilight movies are hard, painted contacts that are very uncomfortable. I can see why he hates them.
