Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark
has set a new date to turn its lights back on: The troubled Broadway musical announced today that it will officially open June 14. But bad news for those who hoped to see the show this spring — performances scheduled between April 19 and May 11 have been canceled in order for the musical to rehearse the $65 million show’s revisions, which will be implemented with the help of The Boy From Oz director Philip William McKinley and Spider-Man comic book writer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. (Director Julie Taymor is no longer in charge of day-to-day directorial duties; Bono and The Edge also plan on writing additional songs to the show.) Previews for the show will resume May 12 at Broadway’s Foxwoods Theatre.

This show is more of a train wreck than the Republican party!
Bono is set to lose more money on this misadventure, maybe even more than his last album.
I saw it. It was bad.
It is not worth the money to see it. It is a train wreck. The dumbing of America is now complete.
I saw it. It was dreadful. Do we think that this gives them enough time to completely redo it? I doubt it.
Don’t count on it.
Turn it Off already.
Oh make it stop already
The music is TERRIBLE. You have to wonder who okay’d this.
“Spider-Man: The Troubled Musical” seems a much more appropriate title now, would you agree?
I went to go see it on Wednesday (free ticket). After the first 10 minutes I started to think that maybe the show was unfairly trashed. Sure it was a bit out there but some of the set pieces were really outstanding.
And then the 2nd Act happened.
I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. Somehow it became totally incomprehensible. The songs got worse and the character designs became so ridiculous, some audience members would just laugh (myself included). But more than anything else, the script is just terrible. I hope the new writer decides to actually write something that, I don’t know…has something to do with Spiderman.
The problem is the director/writer, whom they wisely finally fired. “The Lion King” was just an adaptation, but the producers thought it qualified her to be an actual writer. Big Mistake. Now the investors are going to lose their shirts. Look, 95% of comic book readers are male, what made the producers think a woman could make a Broadway musical out of a comic book? Big mistake #2. Then they kept pouring money into it despite knowing it was lousy. Big Mistake #3. Close the show down!
Eh, I don’t think gender was the issue here – it was the specific person chosen. Though men make up ***85%*** of the comic reading audience, there are plenty of women who are avid comics fans. Was Julie Taymor one of them? Did she understand the character/mythology/storyline of Spiderman to begin with? Did she have a proven record of success with *original* writing for musicals? Don’t lay one person’s failures at the feet of the entire gender.
I feel like we need to start a betting pool for a release date this show will actually stick to.
Make that “an official opening date”.
Such a shame, there’s no way this show is going to turn a profit
good actors, good stage, grate costumes, horrible script. they need to get some one who actually knows spider-man!
