Jerry Seinfeld recalls the days when Jay Leno was a comedian

Jerry Seinfeld popped in on Jay Leno last night, and he treated the audience to four minutes of stand-up before sitting down with the host. I prefer my Seinfeld long-form, when he can really get going and the jokes build exponentially as he weaves and connects subjects you’ve never heard linked the same way before. But I’ll take my Sein any way I can, though I actually thought he was better once he sat down with Jay. The two men clearly have a rapport — only Seinfeld could have said, “Remember when Jay used to do this, when he was a comedian?” without any malicious intent. What did you think of his guest appearance? Does he still have it?

A lot of people don’t remember when Leno used to be one of the funniest men on the planet. Really. Check out some of his old guest bits on Letterman’s NBC show. Still funny.

Um…yeah, no… No, Jay Leno was never one of the funniest men on the planet.

Seinfeld has gotten so smug over the years that I can barely stand to look at that perpetual smirk of his. But I still love Jay, though.

I agree. I think the worst was when he was on Letterman a few years ago when the Michael Richards controversey took off, same with his appearance on Larry King a few years ago. Smug and egotistical.

Damn, Jerry. Don’t you make enough money to keep that brown off of your nose?

Can’t stand either of them anymore and I used to like them both.

TV Guide was wrong to call “Seinfeld” the best TV comedy ever so soon after it went off. There have been many sitcoms a lot better, both before and since. Even the Baseball Hall of Fame waits five years after a player retires before considering him to be elected. Time enables us to get a little perspective. I thought “Seinfeld” became annoying as hell in its last few seasons.

agree – I thought seinfeld was funny when it was on but can’t sit through the reruns. Friends still makes me laugh out loud, though.

I have never been able to sit through more than 10 minutes of an episode of Seinfeld. And I loved Seinfeld as a comedian before the series. I guess my brain was just not susceptible to the embedded mind control signals that they must have inserted to make that show watchable.

Seeing this reminds me how good Seinfeld’s movie “Comedian” is. And though I admit it grudgingly, I thought Carson’s heir apparent was Leno. Boy, was I wrong about that!
